Why the win mattered to Filipino viewers
Vasquez was born in the Philippines and has been described in contemporary coverage as a singer from Mindanao who later settled in Utica, New York. Before pursuing the competition full-time, he was also identified as an aspiring dentist.
His win carried particular significance in the Philippines and among Filipino audiences abroad. Philippine coverage characterized Vasquez as the first Filipino winner of the U.S. edition of The Voice. That is the careful formulation: broader claims that he was the first Asian winner across every international version of The Voice are not established by the available evidence and should not be treated as a universal franchise record. The Los Angeles Times’ coverage also placed the victory in the context of Vasquez’s Filipino background and its importance to viewers.

Vasquez’s path through the competition
Vasquez made an immediate impression during the Blind Auditions, where he reportedly received a four-chair turn. His audition song was Rose Royce’s “I’m Goin’ Down,” a performance that put him into contention for one of the season’s strongest teams before he chose Bublé as his coach.
Episode and interview coverage identified several of the songs he performed during the season:
- “I’m Goin’ Down” by Rose Royce during the Blind Auditions
- “The Power of Love”
- “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”
- “Crying”
- “If I Can Dream”
- “Every Breath You Take”
The song list comes from episode reporting and Vasquez’s post-show interview coverage, including TV Insider’s interview and competition recap. It is best understood as a record of his televised performances rather than an independently audited ranking of them. Across the season, the performances established the broad vocal range that helped him become one of Team Bublé’s two finalists.
