What happened aboard Air Force One
The exchange took place during a press gaggle aboard Air Force One. The White House later published the full recording under the title “President Trump Gaggles with Press on Air Force One, Nov. 14, 2025.”
In the video, an off-camera female reporter asks Trump about Epstein-related material that had recently become public. Trump initially says that he knows nothing about the matter. When the reporter continues with a follow-up—asking, in substance, why the files should not be released if they contain nothing damaging to him—Trump points in her direction and says, “Quiet, quiet, piggy.”
Published accounts vary slightly in punctuation and in whether the repetition is transcribed as “Quiet, quiet, piggy” or “Quiet, piggy.” They agree on the central fact: Trump used the word “piggy” while interrupting the reporter.

Who was the reporter?
The reporter was identified by contemporaneous coverage as Catherine Lucey, Bloomberg News’s White House correspondent based in Washington.
The White House video does not clearly show Lucey’s face during the exchange. Her identification therefore comes from contemporaneous reporting and professional biographies, rather than visual identification from the recording alone.
What question was Trump responding to?
The immediate context was the release on November 12, 2025, by House Democrats of emails obtained from Jeffrey Epstein’s estate. The material included emails attributed to Epstein that made claims about Trump.
One 2019 email said that Trump “knew about the girls.” Other released material included Epstein’s claim that Trump spent time at Epstein’s house with a victim, as well as a 2011 message referring to Trump as “the dog that hasn’t barked.”
Those statements were Epstein’s claims and allegations. Their inclusion in released emails does not, by itself, establish that every assertion was true. Associated Press reporting noted that it remained unclear what Epstein meant by “knew about the girls” and whether the phrase referred to knowledge of Epstein’s criminal conduct.
That distinction is important. The available account separates four different things:
Rank #2
- the existence and release of the emails;
- what Epstein wrote or allegedly said in those emails;
- Trump’s denials and account of his relationship with Epstein; and
- facts independently established through evidence or official findings.
The emails, as described in the reporting, do not by themselves resolve those questions.
Trump’s account and the White House response
Trump has denied knowing about Epstein’s sex crimes and denied participating in them. His long-standing account is that he broke with Epstein and expelled him from Mar-a-Lago after Epstein behaved improperly toward female employees, including Virginia Giuffre.
The White House characterized the Democrats’ presentation of the emails as selective and misleading. It defended Trump’s conduct during the Air Force One exchange rather than disputing that he used the word “piggy.”
A White House official described Lucey’s conduct toward colleagues on the plane as inappropriate and unprofessional. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt also defended Trump’s general manner with reporters, describing him as frank and honest and saying that voters had elected him in part for that bluntness.
Reporting on the incident did not identify a specific false statement by Lucey that Trump was correcting when he insulted her. The available evidence supports the conclusion that he interrupted and directed a personal remark at her while she was asking about the Epstein documents. It does not establish that she was literally or legally “silenced.”
Why the clip drew attention
The video spread widely online after the White House released it, with much of the reaction and broader coverage appearing between November 18 and November 20. Critics focused on the contrast between the subject of Lucey’s question—a matter involving public records, allegations about a politically powerful person, and possible government disclosure—and Trump’s personal response.

Many critics also described “piggy” as a gendered insult aimed at a female journalist. That is an interpretation of the language and context, not a legal ruling. The remark has not been established here as unlawful, defamatory, or formally adjudicated as misogynistic.
Other coverage placed the exchange within a broader reported pattern of Trump disparaging women journalists. That reporting has included later confrontations involving ABC News correspondent Mary Bruce and other reporters. The pattern framing is an editorial interpretation based on multiple incidents; it should not be confused with a formal legal or institutional finding.

The larger press-questions issue
The incident matters beyond the insult itself because it illustrates the tension between presidential access and aggressive questioning. Reporters in a presidential press pool are expected to pursue follow-ups, especially when a public official has offered a brief denial about records of significant public interest. Presidents, in turn, may object to a question’s premise or decline to answer it. The central point in this exchange is that Trump moved from disputing or dismissing the subject to personally addressing the reporter.
Whether viewers regard that as blunt political communication or unacceptable treatment of a journalist depends partly on their assessment of Trump’s broader relationship with the press. The factual core is narrower: a recorded interruption and insult, a question about Epstein-related emails, a White House defense of Trump’s style, and unresolved disputes about what the released material means.

Readers should avoid treating a quoted email as an independently verified finding. Epstein’s statements may be relevant to understanding what he claimed, what investigators or lawmakers may want to examine, and why the documents generated political controversy. They are not automatically proof of the conduct they describe.
The same caution applies in the other direction. Trump’s denial is his position, not an independent determination that settles the underlying questions. A complete account must keep the documents, the allegations, the denials, and independently corroborated evidence separate.

For the incident itself, the most reliable starting point is the White House’s full video, followed by contemporaneous reporting that identifies Lucey and explains the document-release context. Short social-media clips can omit the preceding questions and make it harder to assess the exchange in sequence.
