The official way to download an Amazon Prime movie to a laptop is to use the Prime Video app—not a web browser. Install the Prime Video app for Windows 10 or Windows 11, or the official app for macOS, sign in, open an eligible movie, and select Download.
What you download is an app-managed offline copy for personal viewing. It is not a normal MP4 or other unrestricted movie file that you can copy to another computer, edit, or play in any media player.
What “download” means on Prime Video
Prime Video uses the word download to mean offline playback inside its supported app. The app manages the downloaded title, your account authorization, viewing period, and digital-rights restrictions.
It does not provide a portable movie file for general use. You should not expect to find a usable MP4 in your normal Downloads folder, transfer the title to a USB drive, open it in VLC, or import it into video-editing software.

Can you download Prime Video movies in a browser?
Prime Video supports online streaming in a web browser on Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux computers. However, Amazon’s separate download guidance identifies the Prime Video desktop apps for Windows 10/11 and macOS as the supported laptop platforms for offline downloads.
In practical terms:
- Browser: use it for streaming while you are online.
- Official Windows or macOS app: use it when you need the built-in Download option for offline viewing.
If you are using the website and cannot find a Download button, switch to the official app rather than installing an unofficial downloader.

- Open the Microsoft Store on your Windows laptop.
- Search for and install the official Prime Video for Windows app.
- Open the app and sign in with the Amazon account that has access to the movie.
- Search for the movie or browse to it in the Prime Video catalog.
- Open the movie’s detail page.
- Select Download, if the title is eligible.
- When the download finishes, open the app’s Downloads area and start playback there.
Amazon’s download help page says Windows users may be able to choose where downloads are saved. Use suitable local storage and avoid USB-connected drives: Amazon specifically advises against saving Prime Video downloads to USB-connected storage.
If you are buying a computer for this purpose, a Windows 11 laptop is the straightforward choice because Windows 10/11 is explicitly listed among the supported laptop platforms. Compatibility still depends on the laptop’s operating-system version, available storage, and the current app requirements; a new laptop does not make every Prime Video title downloadable.
Download a movie on a Mac laptop
Amazon also lists the Prime Video app for macOS as a supported download platform. The interface and available settings can vary with the Prime Video app version, macOS version, title, and region, so Amazon’s instructions should take priority over any universal folder-location advice.

- Sign in with the Amazon account that has access to the title.
- Find the movie in the catalog and open its detail page.
- Select Download, if Amazon offers that control for the title.
- Open the app’s downloads area to watch the movie without an internet connection.
Do not assume that every MacBook model or every macOS release has identical support. Check that the Mac can run the current official Prime Video app and keep both macOS and the app updated.
How to download a TV series instead
For a television series, Prime Video may offer a control to download an entire season. You can also download individual episodes by selecting the download icon next to the episode in the episode list.
The same restrictions apply: the episodes remain managed by the Prime Video app and are not exported as ordinary video files. A season or episode may have different availability from the movie or series page you can stream in a browser.

Why the Download button is missing
Download eligibility is title-specific. Amazon says availability and the way content is offered can change by location and over time because of content-provider restrictions. A movie that streams successfully in a browser may not offer offline downloading in the app.

- The title is not eligible: open the movie’s detail page in the official app and look for Download. If the control is absent, the title may not support downloads in your region or under its current license.
- You are using the website: install or open the official Windows or macOS app.
- Your account lacks the required access: verify that the title is covered by your Prime or Prime Video subscription, channel membership, rental, or purchase.
- The title has special rights: free, promotional, ad-supported, subscription, rental, and purchased content can have different download permissions.
- The app or operating system is outdated: update the Prime Video app and Windows or macOS.
- There is not enough local storage: free space on the laptop’s internal storage before starting the download.
- Your location is being obscured: do not use a VPN or another technique to evade regional restrictions. Amazon’s rules prohibit disguising location in connection with the service.
How long does a downloaded movie remain available?
Offline availability is not necessarily permanent. The exact period depends on the title, your territory, the type of access, and whether you are watching subscription, rental, or purchased content.
Subscription titles
For subscription content, a downloaded title generally remains usable only while the applicable Prime or Prime Video subscription is active and while the title is within its viewing period. Amazon commonly describes approximately 30 days to begin watching a download and approximately 48 hours to finish after playback begins. These are typical limits, not guarantees for every title, territory, or content type.
Rented titles
Amazon generally says a rental remains in the video library for 30 days from the rental date, with at least 48 hours to finish after playback starts. Some titles may provide longer periods. Downloading a rental does not extend the rental term.
Purchased titles
Purchased titles are generally available for streaming or downloading, but Amazon warns that licensing restrictions or other reasons can make purchased content unavailable in the future. A purchase should not be treated as a guarantee of perpetual access to an unrestricted file.

Storage and external displays
Prime Video downloads consume local storage, so check the laptop’s available space before downloading several high-quality movies. If the Windows app offers a storage-location setting, use a suitable local drive. Amazon does not recommend saving Prime Video downloads to USB-connected drives.
That advice also means a USB flash drive or external SSD is not a dependable solution for carrying Prime Video downloads between computers. The downloads are controlled by the app and account rather than designed as transferable files.
Amazon says downloaded content cannot be played through Chromecast or AirPlay. Offline viewing on a television may be possible with particular supported devices or adapters, but there is no universal guarantee that a laptop download can be sent to any TV. If watching on a larger screen matters, verify the specific device and connection support before downloading.
Troubleshooting: the download will not start or play
- Confirm the platform. Use the official Prime Video app on Windows 10/11 or macOS, not only a browser.
- Check the title page. The Download control must actually appear for that movie, episode, account, and location.
- Verify access. Make sure the signed-in account has the relevant subscription, channel, rental, or purchase rights.
- Check storage. Free local space and retry the download on the laptop’s supported internal storage.
- Update everything. Install available updates for the app and operating system, then reopen Prime Video.
- Reconnect briefly. Open the app while online if the title’s viewing period or account authorization may need to be refreshed.
- Check the clock and connection. An incorrect system time, unstable connection, or interrupted download can prevent authorization or completion.
- Do not bypass restrictions. A VPN, screen recorder, downloader, or DRM-removal tool will not turn an unavailable title into a supported download and can create terms or copyright problems.
If the button remains missing after these checks, the most likely explanation is not a laptop fault: the title, account, region, or license does not permit offline downloading.

Can you copy a Prime Video download to another laptop?
Not as an ordinary movie file. Prime Video downloads are intended for playback through the authorized app on the device where they were downloaded. They are not designed to be copied, renamed, converted, edited, resold, or played in arbitrary third-party software.
The supported solution is to install the official app on the other laptop, sign in with the authorized account, and check whether the title can be downloaded there. Do not attempt to extract or decrypt the original app data.
