Tubi is the best first app to try if you want a large, straightforward catalog of free movies and TV on Fire TV. Pluto TV is better for live channels and a traditional guide, while Hoopla is the standout if you have a participating library card and want to borrow titles without the usual ad-supported model.

This U.S.-oriented list focuses on legitimate apps available through the Amazon Appstore or supported Fire TV services. In practice, “free” usually means ad-supported, free-with-ads, or borrowed through a library. Catalogs, channels, availability, and device support can change by country, Fire TV generation, licensing agreement, and app version.

The eight best free Fire TV apps at a glance

App Best for How the free service works Important limitation
Tubi Large on-demand selection Free, ad-supported movies and shows Catalog changes frequently
Pluto TV Live channel surfing Free live channels plus on-demand content Channels and titles vary by location
Plex Free movies, documentaries, and live TV Free, ad-supported catalog You do not need a personal media server, but content varies by region
Xumo Play Free live programming and movie collections Ad-supported live and on-demand viewing Older Fire TV models may have compatibility issues
Sling Freestream Live TV and a channel-guide experience Free live and on-demand tier Separate from paid Sling plans
The Roku Channel Free movies, shows, news, and kids’ programming Free catalog mixed with optional paid content A Roku device is not required, but not everything displayed is free
Hoopla Ad-free library borrowing Borrow movies and TV with a participating library card Eligibility, monthly limits, and selection depend on your library
Prime Video’s free-with-ads catalog Free content inside an app many Fire TV owners already use Free movies, TV, and FAST channels without Prime Paid rentals, purchases, and subscription titles appear alongside free ones

1. Tubi: the best all-purpose free movie app

Tubi is the clearest recommendation for most Fire TV owners who want to choose a movie or show on demand rather than wait for it to appear on a live channel. Tubi’s official service information describes a large catalog of movies and television shows with no subscription fee and no credit card requirement. Viewing is supported by advertising.

The app officially supports Amazon Fire TV and can be installed from the Amazon Appstore. Its catalog is broad enough to make it a useful first download for general entertainment, older films, television series, documentaries, and genre browsing, although the exact selection depends on your market and changes over time.

Choose Tubi if: you want the simplest explanation of free streaming: open the app, browse the available catalog, and watch with commercial breaks.

Keep in mind: a title being available today does not mean it will remain available indefinitely. Search for a particular film in your own Fire TV app rather than relying on an old list of Tubi titles.

2. Pluto TV: the best free replacement for channel surfing

Pluto TV combines two different experiences: live, scheduled channels and an on-demand library. That makes it a good fit for viewers who miss turning on the television and browsing a guide instead of deciding on one title from a large menu.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pluto’s official device information specifically supports Amazon Fire TV and promotes hundreds of shows and thousands of movies on the platform. Those figures are service marketing claims rather than permanent catalog limits, and the available channels and titles can vary by country.

Use Pluto’s live section when you want background television, news, entertainment, or a themed channel. Use its on-demand area when you want more control over the movie or series you start. Both parts of the service are free and ad-supported.

Choose Pluto TV if: you prefer a traditional TV-guide layout and the feeling of browsing channels.

Keep in mind: a live channel is scheduled programming, not an on-demand promise. Even when Pluto carries a particular film or show, its availability and placement may change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Plex: free streaming without running a media server

Plex is often associated with organizing and streaming a viewer’s own media collection, but you can also use Plex for its separate free catalog. Its ad-supported service includes movies, documentaries, television programming, and live TV, and Plex says a subscription or credit card is not required for its free streaming offering.

The Plex app is available on Amazon Fire TV, including access to its free video-on-demand catalog. You do not need to own a computer, attach a hard drive, or run a Plex server to watch Plex’s own free content. Those are optional features for people who want to organize personal media.

Choose Plex if: you want a mix of free movies, documentaries, television content, and live channels, or you may eventually want one app for both personal media and free streaming.

Keep in mind: Plex notes that its content and channels vary by location. The free catalog is ad-supported, and the Plex interface may also present features or content that are separate from the free on-demand selection.

4. Xumo Play: free movies alongside live programming

Xumo Play offers free movies and television programming through a combination of live channels and on-demand collections. Its movie area includes genre-based groupings, which can be more convenient than searching an entire catalog title by title.

Xumo’s support documentation lists Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices among its supported platforms. The cited device-support page was updated on November 12, 2024, so owners of older Fire TV hardware should verify the current Amazon Appstore listing if the app does not appear or will not install.

Choose Xumo Play if: you want another legal, ad-supported option that blends scheduled live viewing with free movies and shows.

Keep in mind: support for the service does not necessarily mean that every Fire TV generation has identical performance or storage requirements. App availability is determined by the storefront and device in your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Sling Freestream: the strongest free live-TV option

Sling Freestream is Sling’s free tier for live and on-demand television. Sling currently advertises more than 600 free live channels and more than 40,000 on-demand shows and movies. These are current promotional figures and should not be treated as a permanent guarantee; channel lineups change.

  • Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.

Basic viewing does not require an account. Creating one can unlock additional features such as watchlists, profiles, rewards, and limited free DVR functionality. Freestream is separate from Sling’s paid subscription plans, so installing or opening the app does not mean you have signed up for a paid package.

Choose Sling Freestream if: you want live news, entertainment, and a conventional guide, especially if your priority is replacing some of the browsing experience of cable television.

Keep in mind: the free Freestream lineup is not the same as every channel or feature available through a paid Sling plan. Check the on-screen label and plan information before assuming a channel is included at no cost.

6. The Roku Channel: free content on a non-Roku device

The name causes unnecessary confusion: you do not need a Roku streaming player or Roku television to use The Roku Channel. Roku’s product information lists compatible Amazon Fire TVs and Amazon Fire TV streaming players, and its support information provides installation guidance for the Fire TV app in the United States.

The service includes free movies, television shows, live news, kids’ programming, and other entertainment. It also displays premium subscriptions and other paid programming, so the app is not an all-free storefront. Look for the specific free or included label before starting playback.

Choose The Roku Channel if: you want another broad free catalog, particularly for a mixture of movies, shows, live news, and family programming.

Keep in mind: the service’s free selection and paid offerings can appear together in the same interface. The Roku Channel being installed on your Fire TV does not make premium content free.

7. Hoopla: the best option if you have a participating library card

Hoopla works differently from the other services on this list. It is a library-borrowing platform, not a conventional free, ad-supported streaming channel service. With a card from a participating library, eligible users can borrow movies and television shows at no monthly streaming fee.

Hoopla supports Amazon Fire TV for movies and shows. Its catalog can include recognizable films and may be especially appealing to viewers who want to watch without the commercial interruptions common on free ad-supported services. The trade-off is that your access depends on your library’s participation and licensing arrangements.

The number of monthly borrows, the length of each loan, and the available catalog can differ from one library system to another. A library card alone is not a universal guarantee that every Hoopla title or feature will be available.

Choose Hoopla if: you can stream movies with your library card through a participating library and prefer borrowing to watching advertisements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep in mind: check your library’s Hoopla policy for eligibility and borrowing limits. If your library does not participate, Hoopla cannot substitute for an ordinary free streaming app.

8. Prime Video’s free-with-ads catalog: the Freevee successor

Amazon has incorporated the free streaming business formerly associated with Freevee into Prime Video. Following Freevee’s deprecation in early 2025, Amazon says the free TV, movie, and FAST-channel catalog remains available inside Prime Video with advertising and without requiring a Prime subscription.

Amazon Ads also describes more than 750 long-form FAST channels from publishing partners for Prime and non-Prime customers. Channel counts and content are subject to change, but the important point is that non-Prime viewers can still access the free portion of Prime Video.

Open a movie or show’s details page and look for labels such as Free or Watch for free. Prime Video also places rentals, purchases, and subscription programming in the same general interface. A search result appearing in Prime Video does not by itself mean the title is free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose this option if: you already use Fire TV and want to check Amazon’s free catalog before installing another app.

Which apps should you install first?

  • For the biggest general-purpose starting point: install Tubi.
  • For live channels and channel surfing: try Pluto TV or Sling Freestream.
  • For a mixture of free movies, documentaries, and live TV: try Plex.
  • For another live-and-on-demand alternative: try Xumo Play.
  • For free movies and shows without buying a Roku device: try The Roku Channel.
  • For potentially ad-free borrowing: check Hoopla through your participating library.
  • For free Amazon programming: search the free-with-ads section of Prime Video.

For DocumentaryTube readers, a practical combination is Tubi or Plex for broad on-demand discovery, Pluto TV or Sling Freestream for live browsing, and Hoopla if a local library provides it. No service should be assumed to carry a particular documentary until you search for it in your region on the publication date.

How to install these apps on Fire TV

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, open Find and then Search. On some older interfaces, use the magnifying-glass icon or a direct Search option.
  2. Enter the exact app name: Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, The Roku Channel, or Hoopla. For Amazon’s free catalog, open Prime Video rather than searching for a new Freevee app.
  3. Select the official listing from the Amazon Appstore. Confirm the developer or service name so you do not install an unrelated imitation.
  4. Choose Get, Download, or the equivalent on-screen button, then wait for installation.
  5. Select Open. If the service offers optional account creation, review what features require an account before signing up.

Exact labels can differ by Fire TV model, software version, and region. The safest approach is to use the official Amazon Appstore listing rather than downloading an APK or following instructions to sideload an unofficial streaming service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an app does not appear or will not install

  1. Check the region. The list is aimed at the United States. A service or individual channel may not be offered in another country’s Amazon Appstore.
  2. Check the Fire TV generation. A service may support Fire TV generally while excluding an older model because of operating-system, processor, storage, or performance requirements.
  3. Search the exact name. Use the current app name and look for the official listing. This is particularly important for Prime Video’s free catalog, because Freevee is no longer the separate destination it once was.
  4. Restart Fire TV. A restart can refresh the storefront and resolve a temporary installation or network problem.
  5. Check storage and updates. Remove apps you no longer use and install available Fire TV software updates if the device reports insufficient space or outdated software.
  6. Check the network. Free streaming still requires a reliable internet connection. A device that installs an app successfully can still experience buffering if the connection is weak or congested.
  7. Do not substitute piracy apps. Unofficial APKs, unauthorized streams, and sideloaded services that distribute copyrighted material create legal, security, and reliability risks and are not necessary for accessing the legitimate options above.

What “free” does—and does not—mean here

Most of these apps are part of the free ad-supported television, or FAST, ecosystem. You do not pay a monthly subscription for the free catalog, but you generally watch commercial breaks and accept that the lineup can change. Some services offer optional paid plans, premium subscriptions, rentals, or purchases alongside their free material.

Hoopla is the major exception. Its access is based on a participating library’s lending arrangement, so the limiting factor is usually library eligibility or borrowing policy rather than advertising. Prime Video requires particular care because free and paid titles are displayed together.

Finally, “available on Fire TV” does not mean that every title is available on every Fire TV device or in every U.S. location. Rights holders can license a movie for one service, region, or period and remove it later. Use the app’s own current listing as the final check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these Fire TV apps really free?

Yes, the services listed have a legitimate free viewing option, but the model differs. Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, Xumo Play, Sling Freestream, The Roku Channel, and Prime Video’s free catalog are generally ad-supported. Hoopla uses library borrowing and requires a card from a participating library. Some apps also display paid rentals, subscriptions, or purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need Amazon Prime to watch Prime Video’s free movies and shows?

No. Amazon’s free-with-ads catalog inside Prime Video is available to Prime and non-Prime customers. Look for Free or Watch for free labels because Prime Video also displays paid and subscription content.

Why can’t I find one of these apps on my Fire TV?

The app may not be offered in your regional storefront, or your Fire TV generation, operating-system version, or available storage may not meet the current requirements. Search the exact app name in the Amazon Appstore, restart Fire TV, check for updates, and verify the service’s current device-support information.

Which free Fire TV app has no ads?

Hoopla is the closest fit because it is a library-borrowing service rather than a typical ad-supported platform. It requires a participating library card, and borrowing limits and catalog availability depend on your library.

The Bottom Line

Start with Tubi for uncomplicated free on-demand viewing. Add Pluto TV or Sling Freestream if you want live channels, Plex or Xumo Play for more variety, and Hoopla if your library participates. Prime Video is also worth checking, but always distinguish its free-with-ads titles from rentals, purchases, and subscription programming.
