Nonprofits should use social media to support specific mission goals—not simply to collect followers or post everywhere. Start by choosing an outcome, identifying the audience and channels you can serve consistently, and building a manageable publishing and review process. Measure whether posts help people take meaningful next steps, while treating privacy, accessibility, copyright, and account security as core responsibilities.
Set a mission-linked goal before choosing what to post
Ask: “What do you want your nonprofit’s social media presence to accomplish?” LinkedIn for Nonprofits identifies awareness, brand recognition and trust, website traffic, and donor relationships as possible goals (LinkedIn for Nonprofits).
Choose one or two priorities for a planning period, then define the audience and the action you hope a post will make possible. For example, a program update might invite a volunteer inquiry; an awareness post might lead someone to an explainer on your website; a fundraising post might direct supporters to a campaign page. These are possible paths, not guaranteed results. A click or comment is an intermediate signal, not proof of a donation or of mission impact.
Turn each goal into a useful measure
- Awareness: Review reach or impressions alongside relevant responses from the audience you want to reach.
- Website traffic: Track link clicks and visits to the intended page. Use consistent campaign tags where appropriate.
- Community or volunteering: Look at meaningful replies, conversations, and volunteer inquiries rather than counting reactions alone.
- Fundraising: Separate engagement and referral traffic from completed gifts. Use the campaign’s own records to assess donations.
Pick a time period and compare like with like. A rise in engagement alongside a rise in donations does not, by itself, show that social media caused the donations.

Choose platforms your team can serve well
There is no single best platform for every nonprofit. Consider where your intended audience is reachable, what formats the team can produce, whether the channel supports your goals, and how much moderation and maintenance it will require. It is better to sustain a useful presence on a manageable number of channels than to create accounts the organization cannot look after.
Video may suit organizations that can produce or curate it responsibly. YouTube’s nonprofit program lists features for eligible program partners including Link Anywhere cards for external campaign links, optimization resources, and dedicated technical support (YouTube for Nonprofits). Check current eligibility and program terms before planning around those benefits.
Build a content calendar and a sustainable cadence
A calendar makes the plan visible and helps staff and volunteers coordinate. LinkedIn for Nonprofits recommends aligning calendar planning with strategy and tracking performance at both post and account level (LinkedIn for Nonprofits).

What to put in the calendar
- The post’s objective and intended audience
- Platform and format, such as a short video, image, or text update
- Owner, draft deadline, and any required approver
- Link destination and the action the post invites
- Publication date, accessibility checks, and follow-up measure
How often should a nonprofit post?
There is no universal posting frequency established for nonprofits. Set a rhythm your team can maintain without compromising accuracy, accessibility, moderation, or other mission work. Review the workload and audience response over time, then adjust. A consistent, well-managed schedule is more useful than an ambitious one that the organization cannot sustain.
Set clear account rules and approval controls
Social posts can spread quickly, be difficult to undo, and blur personal and professional boundaries. The Charity Commission for England and Wales says trustees are responsible for agreeing a social media policy and appropriate, proportionate internal controls. Its guidance was updated on 21 April 2026 to reflect the Online Safety Act 2023; its legal and trustee guidance applies to charities in England and Wales, not automatically to organizations elsewhere (Charity Commission: Charities and social media).
Include these decisions in a practical policy
- Who owns each account and who is permitted to post, reply, or share
- Which posts require approval, and who provides it
- Who monitors comments, how often, and who can hide or remove content
- How account access is secured and handed over when a staff member or volunteer leaves
- What to do after a mistake, harmful post, security issue, or reputational crisis
- How to handle privacy, copyright, defamation, equality and human rights, whistleblower protection, moderation, and online safety
Use stronger review and escalation for posts involving vulnerable people, sensitive personal information, or emotive subjects. Record the reasoning behind consequential decisions. Organizations outside England and Wales should check the laws and regulator guidance that apply in their jurisdiction.

Protect people and respect content rights
Before publishing photographs, artwork, or other material created by someone else, confirm permission and usage rights. Consider privacy laws and obtain consent where required when using personal information. Do not disclose a beneficiary’s sensitive details or location without a lawful and appropriate basis. Follow each platform’s rules and establish a process for reporting harmful or potentially illegal content (Charity Commission: Charities and social media).
Make accessibility part of the publishing workflow
Accessibility features vary across platforms and third-party scheduling tools, so check the final post through the route your team actually uses. The National Council of Nonprofits highlights captions and alt text as practical considerations (National Council of Nonprofits: Social media).
- Add captions to video so viewers can access spoken information without relying on audio.
- Where supported, write concise, descriptive alt text for meaningful images.
- Keep essential information in post text rather than only inside an image or graphic.
- Preview posts on a mobile screen and confirm the publishing tool has retained captions, descriptions, and links.
Use generative AI as a draft assistant, not an authority
Google for Nonprofits describes drafting social media posts as one possible use of generative AI. Its responsible-use guidance calls for human review, fact-checking, attention to bias and mission alignment, and care with sensitive or confidential information (Google for Nonprofits: Responsible AI use).

Check every factual claim and example before publishing; consider whether language represents the communities served fairly. Do not enter personal or confidential information into an AI tool without reviewing its privacy and security terms. A person accountable to the organization should approve the final post.

When video is part of your plan: keep the stream workflow separate
If your nonprofit uses a pre-recorded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, treat that as a separate publishing workflow from ordinary social posts. Use content you have rights to broadcast, and check the channel’s live-stream and copyright requirements before starting. For organizations choosing a do-it-yourself setup, the computer or streaming system must remain available and the stream must be monitored; the exact setup depends on the software and channel configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
