Its mix of familiar comedy, cameos and music made it a hits-forward retrospective rather than a deep account of the series’ history.
What was the SNL 50th anniversary special?
SNL50: The Anniversary Special was the centerpiece of NBC’s 50th-anniversary programming. NBCUniversal scheduled it for Sunday, February 16, 2025, from 8 to 11 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, and described it as a three-hour primetime celebration (NBCUniversal, January 10, 2025).
The scheduled slot and the broadcast’s reported duration are different measures: the Associated Press described the event as a three-and-a-half-hour broadcast. It aired live from Studio 8 in Rockefeller Center, according to NBCUniversal’s audience report (Associated Press, February 17, 2025; NBCUniversal Together, February 17, 2025).
What happened at SNL50?
The broadcast combined comedy sketches, musical performances and celebrity cameos. The AP recap reports that Paul Simon and Sabrina Carpenter opened the show, Steve Martin delivered the opening monologue, and Paul McCartney performed the closing musical number. Those are identified moments, not a complete running order (Associated Press, February 17, 2025).

How many people watched SNL50?
NBCUniversal reported 14.8 million viewers and a 2.53 rating among adults ages 18–49 across NBC and Peacock in live-plus-same-day viewing. These are the network’s reported figures for that measurement window, not a later cumulative total. NBCUniversal also reported 8.7 million social interactions (NBCUniversal Together, February 17, 2025).
NBCUniversal said the special was NBC’s most-watched entertainment telecast in both reported audience categories in five years, comparing it with the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. It also described the event as the most social NBC entertainment telecast in two years and the highest-performing SNL episode or special for social interactions on record. These comparisons are NBCUniversal’s characterizations of its figures. The AP separately rounded the audience to nearly 15 million and noted that the total included Peacock livestreaming figures (Associated Press, February 17, 2025).

Where could viewers watch SNL50?

Peacock said at the time that it would stream the special live and make it available afterward (NBCUniversal, January 10, 2025; Peacock, February 10, 2025). Those announcements establish the planned viewing options then; they do not establish whether the full special is currently in Peacock’s catalog, what regions can access it, or what subscription terms apply. That reach measure uses a different window and should not be compared directly with the special’s live-plus-same-day audience total (NBCUniversal Together, February 17, 2025).
