Saturday Night Live’s “White Men Can Trump” is a parody trailer that turns Donald Trump’s gold sneakers into a comic power of persuasion. Shane Gillis plays a struggling basketball player who does not become more skilled: he simply insists that he is winning until people start to believe him. The sketch riffs on the 1992 sports comedy White Men Can’t Jump.
What is the SNL “White Men Can Trump” sketch?
It is an SNL movie-trailer parody built around the premise of White Men Can’t Jump. Gillis plays Gordon Dwyer, a hapless man whose gold Trump-branded shoes seem to give him a way to talk people into accepting claims that contradict what they have just seen. The joke is not that the shoes improve his basketball ability; it is that his confidence and insistence can make a failure sound like a win. Rolling Stone and The Independent describe the sketch’s premise and scenes.
What movie is it based on?
The title and setup riff on the 1992 film White Men Can’t Jump, a basketball comedy. The parody keeps the recognizable sports-movie frame but swaps athletic improvement for self-serving persuasion. Instead of learning to play better, Gillis’s character claims that a missed shot went in and presses the point until others accept his version. The source film connection is reported by Rolling Stone.
How do the gold shoes figure into the joke?
The sneakers function as a satirical prop, not as a serious claim about footwear or basketball performance. Rolling Stone quotes the trailer narrator saying, “Winning is a state of mind.” Gillis’s character describes the shoes as giving him “the power to say I’m good at basketball, then double down on that until people actually start to believe it.” The Independent recounts other examples of the character persuading people that he deserves a better office and has done better than he actually has.

What were Trump’s gold “Never Surrender” shoes?
The real product behind the parody was a gold high-top sneaker line announced by Trump at Philadelphia Sneaker Con on February 17, 2024, according to The Independent. The newspaper reported that a limited edition of 1,000 pairs was priced at $399 and had sold out at preorder by the time of its February 27, 2024 article. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does the parody use a movie-trailer format?
The trailer format lets SNL borrow the familiar arc of a sports comedy: an unlikely player gets a second chance and seems poised to triumph. The parody then undercuts that setup. Its protagonist’s apparent transformation comes from making people accept his account of events, not from a change in his game. The result links the shoes’ gold, triumphal branding to the sketch’s central joke about insisting that a loss is a win.
