Smile 2 is one of the rare horror sequels that expands its predecessor instead of simply repeating it. Parker Finn moves the curse from a psychiatrist’s private crisis into the highly managed public life of pop star Skye Riley, giving Naomi Scott a larger, more demanding role and allowing the film to explore fame, performance and public breakdown. Critics responded more warmly overall: Rotten Tomatoes lists 86% for Smile 2, compared with 79% for Smile. Yet the sequel is not superior by every measure. Metacritic scores it 67, one point below the original’s 68, and its worldwide box office was substantially lower. The fairest verdict is that Smile 2 is a better-made and more ambitious film for many viewers, while the first remains the bigger commercial success and a close critical rival.
What is Smile 2 about?
Parker Finn returns as writer and director, but the sequel changes almost everything around the supernatural premise. Instead of following psychiatrist Rose Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon in the first film, Smile 2 follows Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), a globally famous singer preparing for a world tour. As the smiling entity closes in, Skye must manage rehearsals, handlers, family pressure, fans and the possibility that every public mistake will become a spectacle.
The credited ensemble includes Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula and Ray Nicholson. The film opened wide in the United States on October 18, 2024. It runs 127 minutes and carries an R rating for strong bloody violent content, grisly images, language throughout and drug use.
The premise gives Finn a different pressure system. Rose’s fear in Smile was largely private and professional: she was losing trust in her patients, colleagues and family while trying to determine whether the curse was real. Skye’s crisis is constantly exposed to cameras and crowds. A breakdown is not merely frightening; it can become a viral clip, a canceled performance or evidence that the person behind the celebrity image is failing.

How does the sequel change the story’s point of view?
Smile 2 relocates the horror from clinical paranoia to celebrity labor. The Associated Press described the film as a meditation on fame, public breakdown and body horror, and that framing explains why the sequel feels larger even when it is dealing with the same basic curse.
Rose’s isolation versus Skye’s visibility
Rose worked in rooms where a handful of people questioned her judgment. Skye is surrounded by people, yet almost none of them can meet her as an ordinary person. Managers need her functional, fans need her charismatic and the entertainment machine needs her onstage at a precise time. The curse exploits that contradiction: the more Skye tries to control her image, the less control she has over what she sees and experiences.
A new kind of inherited trauma
The original film focused on trauma passed through a chain of victims and on the fear of becoming the next person to inflict it. The sequel keeps that supernatural mechanism but adds the burdens attached to a marketable identity. Skye’s body, voice and emotional state are treated as professional assets, so the entity’s attacks become inseparable from the pressure to keep performing.

Is Naomi Scott the main reason Smile 2 works?
Yes. Reviews consistently identify Scott’s performance as the sequel’s anchor. Rotten Tomatoes calls it a “nerve-jangling star turn,” and the praise is tied to the unusual range the role demands rather than to celebrity casting alone.
Scott has to play Skye as a polished performer, a frightened person trying to stay rational, and a woman unsure whether her own memories can be trusted. Those states often overlap within a single scene. She must also sell the physical demands of a touring musician: choreography, stage presence, exhaustion and the split-second recovery expected when an audience is watching.
That performance gives the sequel a stronger emotional through-line than a simple succession of scares would provide. When Skye is alone, the viewer sees the cost of maintaining a public persona. When she is surrounded by dancers, executives or fans, the same face that reassures them can signal that something is terribly wrong. The smile becomes both a supernatural warning and a professional mask.

What is the difference between the two films’ scale and spectacle?
Smile 2 is deliberately broader. Finn uses concerts, choreography, backstage corridors, luxury spaces and larger set pieces to turn Skye’s career into a horror environment. Smile was tighter and more claustrophobic, relying heavily on offices, homes and private encounters.

| Comparison point | Smile | Smile 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Central character | Rose Cotter, a psychiatrist confronting a spreading curse | Skye Riley, a pop star preparing for a world tour |
| Pressure system | Professional credibility, family relationships and private paranoia | Celebrity labor, rehearsals, publicity and constant public scrutiny |
| Visual scope | Tighter spaces and a more contained atmosphere | Concerts, choreography, backstage areas and larger horror set pieces |
| Primary theme | Trauma, isolation and the fear of passing suffering onward | Fame, public image, performance and the body as a product |
The expansion is not only a matter of budget or spectacle. Concert staging lets Finn choreograph crowds as threatening formations and use transitions between performance and reality to destabilize Skye’s point of view. The trade-off is that some viewers may find the first film’s narrower paranoia more intimate and oppressive.
Does Smile 2 improve the horror, or just add more gore?
The sequel improves the horror when its set pieces express Skye’s loss of control, but escalation alone is not automatically an improvement. Finn increases the intensity, the number of bodies in danger and the grotesque imagery. The strongest sequences connect that excess to the film’s theme: Skye is expected to keep smiling while her physical and mental boundaries are being violated.
Where the larger approach succeeds
- Performance becomes suspense. A rehearsal or live appearance can fail in front of thousands of witnesses, making ordinary stage pressure part of the threat.
- Public space becomes unsafe. Crowds, cameras and professional staff do not protect Skye; they make it harder for her to ask for help without creating a spectacle.
- Body horror has a thematic purpose. The entity attacks the body that the music industry packages and sells, linking mutilation to the loss of ownership over one’s image.
Where the first film may remain stronger
Smile gains power from withholding information and trapping Rose in increasingly private confrontations. Its smaller scale can make the curse feel more plausible within everyday life. In Smile 2, the machinery is more visible: the audience can see the tour, the choreography and the set-piece construction. That visibility creates spectacle, but it can also reduce the raw uncertainty that made the original so unnerving.
What do critics’ scores say about which film is better?
The aggregate evidence favors the sequel on Rotten Tomatoes but not on every measurement. Rotten Tomatoes lists Smile 2 at 86% from 212 critics, with an 81% audience score from more than 2,500 verified ratings. The original stands at 79% from 195 critics and a 77% audience score.
| Film | Rotten Tomatoes critics | Rotten Tomatoes audience | Metacritic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smile (2022) | 79% from 195 critics | 77% | 68/100 from 32 critics |
| Smile 2 (2024) | 86% from 212 critics | 81% from more than 2,500 verified ratings | 67/100 from 37 critics |
That split matters. Rotten Tomatoes’ percentage measures the share of positive reviews, while Metacritic’s weighted score reflects the strength of individual reviews on its scale. The numbers support “better received overall” more securely than “better in every way.”

One particularly strong endorsement came from James Preston Poole of Discussing Film, who wrote, “Smile 2 is a triumph. Not just a good horror sequel, but a superior one.” That is a critic’s judgment, not a universal verdict, but it captures why the sequel has earned a reputation as an unusually confident follow-up.
Does the sequel’s ending make the escalation worthwhile?
The ending is the most divisive comparison point because it asks whether the larger canvas produces deeper meaning or simply a bigger shock. The sequel’s final movement pushes Skye’s public and private identities toward a collision, making the entity’s triumph inseparable from the machinery surrounding her career.
That approach gives the conclusion thematic weight: the person the audience has watched trying to preserve control is finally confronted with how little control celebrity systems allow. It also risks overwhelming the character work with spectacle. Viewers who prefer the first film’s gradual dread may find the sequel’s climax more operatic than intimate, while viewers who wanted the premise expanded may see that excess as the point.
There is no objective score for which ending is “more effective.” The useful distinction is whether the escalation remains connected to Skye’s story. When it does, the sequel feels like a genuine progression; when it becomes an excuse for another grotesque image, the original’s restraint looks stronger.
Was Smile 2 a commercial success?
Commercially, the original was clearly larger. The Numbers lists worldwide grosses of $217,038,821 for Smile and $138,024,364 for Smile 2. Domestic grosses were $105,935,048 and $69,012,586 respectively. The listed production budgets were $17 million for the first film and $28 million for the sequel.
| Measure | Smile | Smile 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Worldwide gross | $217,038,821 | $138,024,364 |
| Domestic gross | $105,935,048 | $69,012,586 |
| Listed production budget | $17 million | $28 million |
These figures show that a better-reviewed sequel can still be a smaller theatrical performer. They do not establish profitability, because marketing costs, distribution terms and later home-entertainment revenue are not included in the cited database figures. The commercial gap may reflect the unusual event status of the first film, different audience timing or the sequel’s higher production costs, but the available numbers alone cannot identify a single cause.

Where can you watch Smile 2?
Paramount Home Entertainment released the film digitally on November 19, 2024. The physical release followed on January 21, 2025, in 4K Ultra HD, 4K Ultra HD SteelBook and DVD formats.
Rotten Tomatoes lists subscription availability through Netflix and Paramount+, plus rental or purchase options through Fandango. Is the Smile 2 4K Ultra HD SteelBook worth buying?
The SteelBook is the most collector-oriented edition, while the standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray offers the core technical upgrade without the premium packaging. The documented 4K release includes Dolby Vision/HDR, Dolby Atmos and a substantial set of extras.
| Edition | Best for | Documented details |
|---|---|---|
| 4K Ultra HD SteelBook | Collectors who want premium packaging and the full 4K presentation | Dolby Vision/HDR, Dolby Atmos, commentary, deleted and extended scenes, and multiple featurettes |
| Standard 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Viewers prioritizing picture and sound over collector packaging | 4K presentation with the release’s documented bonus-material package; confirm the retailer’s exact contents |
| DVD | Basic disc playback or older equipment | Standard-definition physical edition released January 21, 2025 |
The bonus material includes Parker Finn’s commentary; deleted and extended scenes; and featurettes titled “Ear to Ear,” “The Rise and Fall of Skye Riley,” “Behind the Music,” “A New Smile,” “Smiler: A New Monster,” “Turn That Frown Upside Down” and “Show Me Your Teeth.” For fans interested in how the concert horror was built, those supplements make the disc more than a barebones movie copy.
Before ordering, verify the current listing, regional stock, package condition and price. No cited source establishes that the SteelBook is permanently limited, so scarcity claims should be treated cautiously.

Who should watch Smile 2?
Watch the sequel if you liked the original’s curse mythology but wanted a more expansive setting, a more physically demanding lead performance and a stronger connection between horror and public image. Scott’s work and the concert-centered production give the film a distinct identity rather than making it a replay of Rose’s story.

If your preference is for restrained psychological horror, the first film may still suit you better. Its tighter scale and lower-key paranoia are deliberate strengths, not shortcomings that the sequel automatically fixes. Watching Smile first is useful for understanding the curse’s continuity, but Smile 2 is built around a new protagonist and pressure system.
Why does the sequel matter as a horror follow-up?
Many horror sequels enlarge a franchise by adding victims, mythology or louder effects. Smile 2 enlarges the premise through a different social environment. A touring pop star has no private life in the usual sense: work, publicity, fandom and personal identity overlap. That lets Finn ask how a supernatural curse would behave when the victim’s face is already a product consumed by millions.
The result is not a universal upgrade. Metacritic’s near-identical scores and the sequel’s lower box office prevent that claim. But the film does clear the more meaningful sequel test: it gives the original idea a new dramatic engine, and Naomi Scott’s performance makes that engine run.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line: is Smile 2 better than Smile?
Smile 2 is better reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, more ambitious in theme and scale, and anchored by a standout performance from Naomi Scott. It is not better by every measurable standard: Metacritic slightly favors the original, and the first film earned far more worldwide. The most accurate recommendation is to treat Smile 2 as one of the stronger horror sequels of its cycle—an expansion that many viewers will prefer, even though the original remains a formidable and commercially bigger film.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Smile 2 originally plan to stream instead of opening in theaters?
Parker Finn said in a Directors Guild of America Q&A that the film was among the first projects switched from streaming plans back to a theatrical release as the industry changed. That decision helped position the sequel as a cinema event rather than a quiet platform debut.
Do the box-office numbers prove that Smile 2 lost money?
No. Grosses and listed production budgets do not include marketing, theater splits, distribution agreements or later digital and disc revenue. They show that the sequel was a smaller theatrical performer, not whether it was ultimately profitable.
Is the Smile 2 4K SteelBook officially a limited edition?
The documented release identifies a SteelBook version, but the cited materials do not establish a permanent print limit or a guaranteed scarcity date. Treat retailer claims about rarity as unverified and check current stock before paying a premium.
