Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s new polio documentary is titled Across Every Doorway. SOC Films announced it on World Polio Day, 24 October 2026, with a planned release in November 2026. The film follows four Pakistani women whose jobs span vaccination-team preparation, campaign supervision, household outreach and laboratory surveillance. Rather than treating eradication as an abstract international target, it focuses on the conversations, safety risks and logistical work required to reach children one household at a time.
What is Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s new polio documentary called?
The film is Across Every Doorway, a SOC Films production announced on 24 October 2026. Its title reflects the documentary’s focus on what happens inside and around homes: vaccinators and health workers must find families, explain the purpose of repeated doses, answer objections and identify children who may otherwise be missed.
SOC Films has planned the release for November 2026. The announcement does not give an exact premiere date, runtime, distributor, broadcaster, streaming service or physical-media edition, so availability will depend on later confirmation from the company.

- Fouzia Ahmed, Karachi: works on preparing vaccination teams and the practical organization needed before a campaign reaches households.
- Dr Shumaila Akbar, Rawalpindi: is shown overseeing campaign activity, linking field implementation with public-health management.
- Laiba Ijaz, Peshawar: carries out household outreach, where conversations with parents and caregivers determine whether children receive the drops.
- Dr Riqba Akhtar, Islamabad: works with laboratory testing of environmental and human samples, providing surveillance evidence about where poliovirus may be circulating.
Together, their roles connect planning, supervision, direct contact with families and scientific monitoring. The film therefore presents eradication as a chain of interdependent tasks rather than a single clinic visit.
What does the documentary show about Pakistan’s polio vaccination campaign?
Across Every Doorway centers the hidden operational and emotional labor behind vaccination. The women encounter refusals, misinformation, mistrust and social pressure, while also dealing with security concerns and the difficulty of finding newborns, newly arrived families and children in hard-to-access locations.
Trust is built through repeated local conversations
The film depicts workers speaking with doctors, religious leaders and local officials as part of trust-building. Those exchanges matter because a campaign can have doses and trained staff yet still fail to reach a child if a household does not accept the visit or if a family is absent when teams arrive.

Access is a security and mobility problem
Reaching every eligible child is not simply a matter of mapping streets. Insecurity can close routes, limit movement and leave communities outside regular campaign coverage. Families who move into a district, newborns added since the previous round and children living in isolated areas require active follow-up rather than assumptions that an earlier visit covered them.
Laboratory work makes invisible transmission visible
Akhtar’s laboratory role broadens the story beyond vaccination encounters. Testing environmental and human samples can indicate whether poliovirus is circulating even when reported paralysis cases do not show the full picture. That surveillance helps public-health teams decide where response and vaccination efforts need to be concentrated.
Why is Pakistan still important to global polio eradication?
Pakistan remains one of the places where wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) transmission is active. In its 45th Polio IHR Emergency Committee statement, dated 25 August 2026, the World Health Organization reported four WPV1 cases worldwide in 2026 up to that review, including one in Pakistan, and 57 WPV1-positive environmental samples from Pakistan during 2026. WHO said sustained transmission was concentrated in South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Karachi and parts of Afghanistan.

The same statement estimated that about 250,000 children in South Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were reportedly unreached, primarily because insecurity constrained access. That figure illustrates why the documentary’s attention to routes, safety and household-level trust is directly connected to eradication outcomes.
Global progress has been enormous but incomplete. WHO says polio cases fell by more than 99%, from over 350,000 estimated cases in 1988 to two endemic countries as of 2025. The organization also warns that transmission can return among unimmunized populations after major progress. Its plain-language conclusion is decisive: there is no cure for polio; it can only be prevented.
How does Across Every Doorway differ from a conventional polio report?
The documentary’s defining choice is to center frontline women rather than only survivors, senior policymakers or headline case counts. Its story moves across four settings and four kinds of evidence: field preparation, campaign observation, personal household dialogue and laboratory surveillance.
