Seattle’s TESSERAE Space Habitat Pavilion: What the Exhibit Showed—and Why It’s Closed

The futuristic habitat that “touched down” at Seattle’s Museum of Flight was TESSERAE, a 20-foot-high, full-scale pavilion built to show what a future modular space habitat might feel like. It was a ground-based mock-up—not a spacecraft or operational space station. The pavilion opened on September 28, 2024, and closed on January 12, 2025; the larger Home Beyond Earth exhibition closed two weeks later, on January 26, 2025.

What came to the Museum of Flight?

TESSERAE stands for Tessellated Electromagnetic Space Structures for the Exploration of Reconfigurable, Adaptive Environments. The concept was developed by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based nonprofit Aurelia Institute. Its Seattle pavilion was a life-size dome, about 20 feet high, displayed on the T.A. Wilson Great Gallery mezzanine as part of Home Beyond Earth. The Museum of Flight described it as TESSERAE’s first public exhibition. The museum’s exhibit description explains the pavilion and its proposed habitat design.

“Touch down” was a playful description of the pavilion’s arrival in Seattle. The exhibit had not come from orbit: it was a terrestrial demonstration of an idea for living in space.

A habitat concept, not a space station

The proposed TESSERAE habitat is built around hexagonal and pentagonal tiles that would connect through electromagnetic forces. The tiles are envisioned as flat-packed for launch and autonomously assembled in orbit, creating a modular structure whose interior could be rearranged as needs change.

  • IMPRESSIVE 28" DISPLAY CENTERPIECE - Standing nearly 28 inches tall, this model delivers a striking vertical display that commands attention in any room, office, or collection.
  • SKILL LEVEL 4 – ADVANCED BUILD EXPERIENCE - Designed for experienced hobbyists ages 12+ seeking a challenging, rewarding project with intricate parts and detailed assembly.
  • READY FOR CUSTOM PAINT FINISH - Molded in light gray plastic so you can paint and detail to your exact preferences for a museum-quality appearance. (Paint & glue required, not included.)

That is a design proposition, not a demonstrated capability of a complete station. The pavilion was not pressurized or flight-certified, and it did not assemble in space. A tile test or demonstration is also not the same as testing a complete habitat with its structure, life-support systems, shielding, power, thermal control, docking, and crew-safety systems integrated.

Modularity could offer more flexibility than a fixed interior, but it brings engineering questions of its own: connections must work reliably despite vibration, temperature changes, radiation, and misalignment; every joint and interface adds potential maintenance work. Flat-packing may help with launch packaging, but it does not by itself solve pressure containment, radiation protection, or the many other requirements for an occupied orbital station.

What visitors could see inside

The pavilion put daily life and human well-being at the center of its vision. Rather than presenting a habitat only as a shell that keeps people alive, it showed how food, rest, movement, storage, navigation, and community might shape an interior designed for long stays in microgravity.

  • The Green Vault: An aeroponics concept for growing fresh food in microgravity.
  • Cooking and fermentation: A zero-gravity sous vide cooker and fermentation orbs offered ideas for preparing food in weightlessness.
  • Algae-filled panels: Presented as a possible way to generate breathable air while contributing to the interior’s design. They were a concept, not proof of a complete working life-support system.
  • Storage and movement: Nature-inspired storage, hand-knotted nets, and sea-anemone-inspired inflatables suggested ways to organize belongings, move around, position oneself, and rest without gravity.

These features pointed to a practical challenge of long-duration spaceflight: crews need more than survival equipment. They also need ways to eat, work, move, find their way, get rest, and spend time together. Designing for those needs can make an environment more adaptable and supportive, but adds mass, complexity, and maintenance demands. The pavilion illustrated a design vision; it did not establish that its food, air, or comfort systems were ready for an orbital habitat.

What had been tested?

Aurelia Institute’s 2024 account of its work says earlier TESSERAE tile work had flown to the International Space Station in 2022, and that the organization was developing larger tiles while preparing for another ISS mission planned for 2025. That account describes component-level and related technology work, not the deployment of a complete TESSERAE habitat. A planned mission is not evidence that it later took place or succeeded.

It helps to keep four different things separate: laboratory and parabolic-flight research; tests or payloads involving individual tiles; the full-scale pavilion built on Earth; and the proposed orbital habitat. Progress on one does not mean the others have been completed. Before a concept like this could house a crew, it would need extensive validation of its structure and connections, pressure containment, life support, thermal and radiation protection, robotic assembly, servicing, docking, and crew safety.

Part of a larger exhibition about life beyond Earth

Home Beyond Earth examined the history and future of living and working in orbit. It brought together more than 50 artifacts, models, space-flown objects, and uniforms, along with digital projections and more than a dozen interactive elements. Its scope included the evolution of space habitats as well as ideas for space hotels, orbital cities, and lunar industry. TESSERAE added a walk-in, future-facing environment to that broader story. See the Museum of Flight’s page for Home Beyond Earth for the exhibition’s description.
