The image presents the letter as a December 1998 reply, but it was invented for a satirical Scoopertino story published in 2011.
What did the viral letter claim?
The image depicts Connery refusing Jobs’s supposed invitation to appear in an Apple advertisement. Its fabricated text includes the lines “You are a computer salesman” and “I am f***ing JAMES BOND!” Those are words attributed to Connery by the hoax, not verified quotations from him.
The date shown on the alleged letter—December 1998—does not establish when it was written. The text appeared as fiction more than a decade later.
Where did the story come from?
The letter originated in a 2011 post by Scoopertino, a satirical Apple-focused site. PolitiFact quoted the site’s description of itself as “an imaginary news organization devoted to ferreting out the most relevant stories in the world of Apple, whether or not they actually occurred.” (PolitiFact, 2020) The Drum also recorded Scoopertino’s tagline: “All the news that’s fit to fabricate.” (The Drum, 2011)

How did a satire become a viral claim?
The 2011 spread
In 2011, marketing executive John Willshire reposted the item on Twitter as if it were genuine. The Drum reported that thousands retweeted it before the mistake was corrected. Willshire later added a correction after learning the letter came from satire. (The Drum, 2011; iMore, 2020)
The 2020 resurgence
After Connery died in 2020, the image circulated again, detached from its satirical origin and presented as a real exchange. Technology and fact-checking outlets including iMore, 9to5Mac, India Today and PolitiFact identified it as fake. (iMore; 9to5Mac; India Today; PolitiFact)

What can—and can’t—we conclude?
The viral letter is fabricated satire, not evidence that Connery turned down Jobs or wrote the quoted insults. That finding does not establish whether Jobs and Connery ever had any other contact; it addresses the specific letter and ad-rejection story that went viral.
