Apple released the commercial “iPhone 15 Precision Finding | Find Your Friends” on May 3, 2024, just before May 4 (Star Wars Day). The nearly three-minute video follows a Mandalorian-costumed convention attendee who uses an iPhone 15 to locate friends in a crowded venue. It advertises an existing Find My feature—not a new iPhone, a Star Wars edition, or a confirmed Apple–Lucasfilm product collaboration.

The official video is available on Apple’s YouTube channel. Contemporary reports from MacRumors and 9to5Mac identified its May 3 publication and Star Wars-themed setup.
What happens in the ad?
- A person wearing Mandalorian-style armor prepares to attend a Star Wars convention.
- The character travels through the city and enters the busy event.
- Surrounded by cosplayers, the attendee cannot spot their friends and asks, “Where are you guys?”
- After a friend shares location information, the iPhone’s Precision Finding interface points toward that person and displays an approximate distance.
The video uses recognizable fan-convention imagery without establishing that every costume represents a specific officially named Star Wars character. Apple also does not identify the spot as a new licensed hardware collaboration.
What Precision Finding does
Precision Finding is a nearby-person feature inside Find My. When a friend has shared their location and the devices meet the hardware and regional requirements, the iPhone can show a directional arrow and changing distance estimate as you move. The interface indicates when you have reached the person.

Apple introduced this capability with the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip in the iPhone 15 generation. Apple says the chip can connect compatible iPhones at up to three times the previous range and is designed to help people find one another in crowds. The underlying launch documentation is in Apple’s announcements for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus and the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple’s launch materials describe Precision Finding for Find My friends as requiring compatible Ultra Wideband hardware and note that availability varies by country or region. The feature is not a capability that can be promised on every older iPhone.

How to find a nearby friend
- Open Find My.
- Tap People.
- Select the friend’s name.
- When the friend is nearby, tap Find.
- Follow the on-screen arrow and distance estimate.
- Tap the close control after you locate the person.
The friend must have shared their location with you, or accepted a location request, and both users need supported hardware for the directional experience. If the Find option is unavailable, Find My can still show the person’s approximate position on a map; you can then use Directions, call or message them, or arrange a meeting point.
Precision Finding is not AirTag tracking
The commercial demonstrates locating a consenting person through Find My People. It does not show an iPhone secretly detecting anyone nearby, and it does not demonstrate finding an AirTag.

Real-world limits and privacy
Apple’s polished convention-floor demonstration is not a guarantee of perfect performance in every building. Walls, bodies, radio interference, crowded interiors and distance can affect the experience. Regional restrictions may also prevent Precision Finding from appearing even on a compatible model.
Location sharing is a prerequisite. The person being located controls that sharing relationship and can stop sharing their location. The feature therefore depends on Find My permissions and consent rather than broad-range detection of strangers.

Why the Star Wars setting fits
The ad appeared on May 3, immediately before May 4, and places the problem in a crowded fan convention where friends can be difficult to spot. That timing and premise make the Star Wars connection a reasonable marketing inference, although Apple did not publish a statement confirming that Star Wars Day was the campaign’s formal strategy.

Ad timing versus iPhone 15 launch
The commercial was not an iPhone 15 launch announcement. Apple announced the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus on September 12, 2023, and the lineup became available on September 22, 2023. The Star Wars-themed video arrived months later, on May 3, 2024, to demonstrate one of the lineup’s Find My capabilities.

What the commercial really promises
Apple’s video is a playful demonstration of a genuine feature: compatible iPhones can provide directional help when you are trying to meet a friend who has shared their location. It should not be read as evidence of a new 2024 iPhone model, an iPhone built around Star Wars branding, or universal Precision Finding support across all iPhones and regions.
