Screen Australia announced more than $5.7 million in combined production and development funding for 47 documentaries on 1 October 2026. The announcement names selected projects, not all 47; it does not give individual title amounts, and the agency’s public approval listings are not an exhaustive or directly reconcilable roll-up of the slate.
How much funding was announced, and what does it cover?
Screen Australia’s 1 October 2026 announcement says the agency committed more than $5.7 million across production and development funding for 47 documentaries. The figure applies to the combined slate; Screen Australia does not publish individual project amounts in its approval listings.
The funded projects span emerging and established creative teams. Screen Australia Head of Documentary Richard Huddleston said the slate reflects support for stories that are “both local and globally relevant,” including international co-productions and direct-to-audience partnerships.

Why a project or amount may not appear
Screen Australia says it does not publish individual production-title details until the first public announcement, which is at the broadcaster’s or distributor’s discretion. It also does not disclose individual title funding amounts; full-year title details are published at year end. The agency said additional information about recently funded projects would be announced alongside the ABC Media Showcase on 21 October 2026.

What the audience statistic does—and does not—show

Screen Australia presents the result as evidence of local screen stories’ potential to prompt social change and shared understanding. It is not a statistic specifically about viewers of documentaries.
