A tent is your overnight shelter; a canopy is optional shade or cover from light rain—not protection from storms. Pack drinking water, weather gear, navigation, first aid and lighting, and check park alerts and fire rules before you leave.
Confirm that camping is allowed
A beautiful stretch of lakeshore is not automatically a legal campsite. Check the land manager’s rules, reservation requirements, site boundaries, closures and current fire restrictions before setting out. Regulations vary by location: the Lake District National Park Authority says wild camping is not permitted without prior landowner permission and advises staying well away from lake shores; NSW National Parks says overnight stays are usually restricted to campground boundaries. These are local examples, not universal rules. Lake District National Park Authority guidance; NSW National Parks camping safety.
Choose a safe, durable pitch
Use a designated campsite or other surface where camping is permitted. Choose level, well-drained ground and avoid low spots, dry creek beds, road drains, flood debris and places that could collect runoff. Look overhead for dead or loose branches, and leave room around the tent to tension its lines. Keep your groundsheet within the tent’s footprint so it does not channel rain underneath.
Setbacks from water depend on the local authority. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service advises camping at least 200 feet from lakes and streams. Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania specifies at least 50 metres for camping near lakes and streams, and 100 metres for human-waste disposal. Follow the rule for the specific site rather than treating either distance as universal. Set up the tent and canopy
Pitch the tent first
Follow the tent manufacturer’s instructions, using the supplied poles and pegs or other permitted anchors. Clear the chosen footprint of loose branches and stones without damaging the site. If rain is possible, make sure the tent entrance and groundsheet placement will not direct water inside.
Use a canopy for shade or light rain
A canopy or tarp can cover a picnic table or provide a shaded place to sit; it is an optional daytime shelter, not a substitute for a tent. Tension a tarp tightly to limit flapping and give it a slope so rain can run off. Keep the shelter away from a fire pit, and check the instructions for the particular canopy before pitching it. Ontario Parks recommends a tight, sloped tarp setup but does not establish a universal wind-speed rating. Ontario Parks campsite setup advice.

Do not assume lake, stream or campground water is safe to drink: check the site’s arrangements and treat or boil water before use. Cook safely and follow fire rules
Use a fuel stove where appropriate, or cook only in places and ways permitted by the managing authority. Fires may be prohibited or limited to designated fireplaces, and restrictions can change with conditions. Never cook inside a tent or other enclosed camping space. Protect people and the lakeshore
- Supervise children near the water and secure loose equipment before weather changes.
- Pack out rubbish and leftover food; use toilets where available.
- Follow local human-waste instructions and required distances from water, camp and trails. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance calls for camping and catholes at least 200 feet from water, camp and trails; Tasmania publishes different local distances and instructions.
- Check alerts and forecasts during the trip. If a storm approaches, get out of the water and move to a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle if available—not under a canopy, in a tent or beneath a tree.

Choose shelter by its job, not by the lakeside view
For an overnight stay, the tent is the essential shelter; a canopy is an optional place for shade or light-rain cover. Before choosing a canopy, consider whether the campsite allows stakes or other anchors, whether the footprint fits the site, and whether its tie-down points suit the setup described by its manufacturer. Follow that product’s instructions and the forecast; the cited guidance does not establish a safe universal canopy wind rating.
