Roku Howdy is a paid, ad-free streaming service that costs $2.99 per month in the United States. Roku launched it on August 5, 2025, as a low-cost catalog of familiar movies, television series, comfort-viewing favorites, and selected Roku Originals. It is designed to supplement larger streaming services—not replace Netflix, Disney+, or Max.
You do not need a Roku television or streaming player to use Howdy. Viewers can subscribe and watch through howdy.tv, mobile apps, Roku devices, and—following a March 24, 2026 expansion—Amazon Prime Video Channels. The main trade-off is straightforward: Howdy is inexpensive and ad-free, but its catalog is much narrower than the libraries of premium streaming giants.
What is Roku Howdy?
Howdy is Roku’s owned-and-operated subscription video-on-demand service, or SVOD. Unlike the free, ad-supported Roku Channel, Howdy requires a monthly subscription and provides its programming without advertising.
Roku’s strategy is not to build another Netflix-sized service. Instead, Howdy targets viewers who want recognizable entertainment at a low monthly price: older movies, familiar television shows, cult favorites, classic comedies, nostalgic dramas, action films, and feel-good romances.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That distinction matters. Howdy is not the entire Roku Channel catalog, and a Roku Channel title should not automatically be assumed to be included with a Howdy subscription. The two services are connected through Roku’s ecosystem, but they are separate offerings with different business models and programming lineups.
How much does Howdy cost?
In the United States, Howdy costs $2.99 per month before applicable taxes. Roku describes the subscription as ad-free and says subscribers can cancel at any time. After cancellation, access continues through the end of the current billing period.
There is no reason to describe Howdy as free. The Roku Channel has a free, ad-supported offering, but Howdy is a separate paid service.
| Service | U.S. monthly price in the available research | Advertising | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Howdy | $2.99 | Ad-free | A small, focused catalog of licensed entertainment and selected Roku titles |
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99 | With ads | A much broader, more expensive service with a large original-programming operation |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99 | Ad-free | Not equivalent to Howdy in catalog breadth, features, or price |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99 | Ad-free | A premium plan with a substantially different service proposition |
The Netflix figures are current U.S. plan prices identified in the research and may change. They are useful for showing the price gap, not for suggesting that Howdy offers an equivalent amount of content, original programming, picture quality, or simultaneous streaming.
Howdy is also cheaper than the monthly prices commonly associated with larger premium services such as Disney+, but exact pricing depends on country, plan, taxes, promotions, and billing route. The U.S. $2.99 price should not be treated as a worldwide price.
What can you watch on Howdy?
At launch, Roku said Howdy contained nearly 10,000 hours of programming. Launch reporting identified licensed content from Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, FilmRise, and other sources, along with selected Roku Original titles.

Examples reported around launch included Mad Max: Fury Road, The Blind Side, Weeds, and Kids in the Hall. Roku’s current product page highlights Weeds, Dirty Dancing, and P.S. I Love You as examples of the service’s programming.
Those examples illustrate the intended experience better than a generic claim about “thousands of titles.” Howdy is built around shows and films viewers may already recognize or may want to revisit, rather than an enormous, constantly refreshed collection of new releases.
Expect a changing licensed catalog
Most of the catalog is licensed, so titles can leave or arrive as contracts change. Availability may also vary by country and by the platform through which a viewer accesses Howdy. Roku’s public materials do not promise that every title will be available identically on Roku hardware, the mobile apps, the web, and Prime Video Channels.
For that reason, check the current Howdy catalog before subscribing if you are joining specifically for one film or series. A launch-day title list is not a permanent catalog guarantee.
Is Howdy a documentary service?
Not specifically. Howdy is marketed around general entertainment, comfort viewing, comedy, drama, romance, action, and recognizable television. Documentary fans may find individual nonfiction titles in the catalog, but Roku does not position Howdy as a documentary-first platform. Readers seeking a service built primarily around documentaries should judge Howdy by its current catalog rather than assume the low price signals a specialist collection.
Where can you watch Roku Howdy?
Roku currently lists several ways to access Howdy:
- Roku TVs
- Roku streaming players
- A web browser through howdy.tv
- The dedicated Howdy mobile app
- The Roku mobile app
- Amazon Prime Video Channels
The dedicated mobile application is available through the Apple App Store and Google Play, according to Roku support documentation. Roku’s 2026 distribution disclosures and contemporaneous reporting place Howdy on Amazon Prime Video Channels beginning March 24, 2026.

- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Distribution can differ by country and account. If Howdy does not appear in a particular app or Prime Video account, that may reflect regional availability, platform rollout, or the current terms of that distribution route rather than a problem with the subscription.
Do you need a Roku device?
No. Roku explicitly supports web and mobile viewing, so a Roku television or streaming player is not a requirement. A phone, tablet, or computer may be enough for occasional viewing.
A Roku device becomes useful when the television itself lacks Roku functionality or when you want a dedicated living-room interface instead of casting or watching on a smaller screen. Roku lists the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, model 3820R2, at $49.99. The device supports HD, 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, long-range Wi-Fi, and includes a voice remote. Those are capabilities of the streaming player; they should not be read as a guarantee that every Howdy title is delivered in 4K, HDR, or Dolby Vision.
Buying a streaming player is therefore an optional hardware decision, not an entry fee for Howdy. If your television already has Roku built in, or you are happy using the web or mobile app, you do not need to purchase anything.

The clearest difference is the service model:
- Price: Howdy costs $2.99 per month in the U.S., far less than even Netflix’s $8.99 ad-supported plan.
- Advertising: Roku describes Howdy as ad-free. Netflix’s least expensive listed plan includes advertising.
- Catalog scale: Howdy launched with nearly 10,000 hours, while Netflix operates a much broader global catalog and a large original-production business.
- Programming strategy: Howdy emphasizes familiar and older licensed entertainment; Netflix offers a wider mix of originals, newer releases, international programming, and licensed titles.
- Role in a subscription lineup: Roku presents Howdy as a low-cost companion service, not as a complete replacement for a major premium streamer.
For someone who wants one service to cover new releases, major originals, international series, children’s programming, and a deep back catalog, Netflix or another large premium platform is likely the more suitable primary subscription. For someone who wants a cheap second service with no commercial interruptions and recognizable comfort viewing, Howdy’s narrower focus may be exactly the point.
Who is Roku Howdy best for?
Howdy makes the most sense for:
- Viewers who want an inexpensive, ad-free supplement to another streaming service.
- People who regularly rewatch familiar sitcoms, dramas, romances, or older films.
- Households that already use Roku and want another subscription inside the same ecosystem.
- Occasional viewers who can subscribe for a particular month and cancel when they are finished.
- People who dislike paying premium-service prices for a smaller amount of actual viewing.
A larger service may be better for:
- Viewers who prioritize the newest releases or a large slate of exclusive originals.
- Households looking for one broad, all-purpose streaming subscription.
- People choosing a service primarily for a specific genre, such as documentaries, unless Howdy’s current catalog happens to contain the desired titles.
- Anyone who expects Howdy to include everything available through The Roku Channel.
How successful has Howdy been?
In April 2026, Antenna estimated that Howdy had surpassed one million subscribers. Antenna’s estimate also indicated that the service added almost 300,000 subscribers during its first month and at least 100,000 more in each subsequent month covered by the report.
The same reporting estimated that 51% of August and September 2025 sign-ups remained subscribed six months later. These figures suggest that Howdy gained meaningful early traction for a low-cost service, but they are third-party estimates, not a subscriber total independently confirmed by Roku. They should not be presented as Roku-reported financial guidance or an official company announcement.

Why did Roku launch Howdy?
Roku has historically been strongly associated with its platform, hardware, advertising business, and The Roku Channel. Howdy gives the company another revenue source: a subscription service that Roku owns and operates rather than a free channel funded primarily by advertising.

The pricing and programming explain the positioning. A $2.99 service can sit alongside Netflix, Disney+, Max, or a free ad-supported platform without asking viewers to make an all-or-nothing replacement decision. Roku can also distribute Howdy beyond its own hardware, including through mobile apps and Prime Video Channels, making the service available to people who do not own a Roku device.
That expansion is important, but it does not change what Howdy is. More distribution makes the service easier to reach; it does not turn a focused catalog into a Netflix-scale one.
Availability outside the United States
Roku’s current Howdy page says the service is available in Mexico, but the Mexican page displays a price of USD 39 per month. That presentation does not align cleanly with the U.S. price of $2.99 per month, and the available support information does not resolve the discrepancy.
Mexican viewers should therefore verify the price, currency, catalog, and billing terms at the point of subscription. More broadly, check local availability before relying on U.S. articles or screenshots. Streaming rights, prices, supported devices, and distribution partners can all vary by territory.

- Check your location. Confirm that Howdy is offered in your country and note the local price rather than assuming the U.S. rate applies.
- Search for the shows or films you actually want. The service’s value depends heavily on whether its rotating licensed catalog contains your comfort-viewing favorites.
- Compare viewing habits, not just prices. A cheaper subscription is not a bargain if you want new originals or cannot find anything to watch.
- Choose the easiest viewing route. Use the web or mobile app if you do not own Roku hardware. Use a Roku TV, player, or compatible Prime Video setup if that better fits your living room.
- Use the flexible cancellation policy. If you only want a short run of programming, cancel before the next billing cycle; Roku says access continues until the current paid period ends.
The strongest case for Howdy is not that it beats Netflix at everything. It is that a viewer can spend $2.99 for a month of familiar, ad-free entertainment without taking on the cost of another full-price premium service.

The Bottom Line
Roku Howdy is best understood as a $2.99-per-month U.S. add-on, not a Netflix replacement. Its appeal is a low price, ad-free viewing, and a recognizable catalog of licensed movies and television shows. You can watch without Roku hardware, although a Roku player can make it more convenient on a television that lacks built-in Roku. Before subscribing, check the current catalog and your local price—especially outside the United States.
