Producer Announces The Sweet Idleness, a Feature He Says Will Be Directed by an AI Entity

Italian producer Andrea Iervolino announced The Sweet Idleness on October 1, 2025, describing it as the first feature film directed by an AI entity. The proposed AI director, FellinAI, is associated with The Andrea Iervolino Company AI. But the headline needs an important qualification: Iervolino says he will remain the project’s human supervisor and producer. The announcement therefore describes a human-controlled production using an AI “director,” not a film made without human creative or legal oversight.

As of August 18, 2026, the announcement and a reported February 2026 completion or debut target are documented, but the searched sources do not independently confirm a completed public release, festival premiere, distributor, or streaming availability.

What was announced?

Iervolino presented The Sweet Idleness as a planned feature directed by FellinAI, described in coverage as a virtual director or creative AI agent. The project is being developed through The Andrea Iervolino Company AI.

The production company’s “first” claim should be treated as promotional language rather than a settled industry record. “First AI-directed film” could mean the first announced, completed, released, or built around a particular type of AI agent. Those are different claims, and the available reporting does not establish which standard has been met.

ANSA’s report on the announcement identifies the film, producer, AI entity, and project premise.

What does “directed by AI” mean?

The phrase can describe several very different workflows:

  • AI generates images, video, dialogue, or music from human prompts.
  • AI proposes shots, edits, performances, or visual styles that people select and revise.
  • An AI system makes decisions inside a multi-agent production pipeline.
  • A company gives an AI system a branded “virtual auteur” identity.
  • Humans approve every important creative, legal, and delivery decision while the AI performs selected tasks.

The reporting establishes that FellinAI is guided and supervised by Iervolino. It does not establish that FellinAI independently controlled the screenplay, casting, shot design, performances, editing, sound, music, final cut, or distribution. Coverage reproduced by Yahoo specifically describes Iervolino’s continuing human-supervisor role.

That distinction matters. A film can contain AI-generated footage and still be conventionally directed by a human. An AI can suggest a shot while a human decides whether it works. Calling the project “AI-directed” does not, by itself, show that a machine possessed independent artistic intent or authority over the completed film.

What is the film about?

The Sweet Idleness is set in a fictional future in which machines provide society with abundance and leisure, leaving only 1% of humanity still working. Work has become a symbolic ritual rather than an economic necessity, and the remaining workers represent humanity’s attachment to labor.

The announcement describes a surreal, dreamlike visual world that includes cathedral-like factories, mechanical clowns, and processions. This is the film’s premise, not a prediction that this future will occur.

Who is doing the human work?

Even under the project’s AI framing, substantial human responsibilities remain likely and necessary. The publicly described model includes:

  • Production supervision: Iervolino remains the producer and human-in-the-loop.
  • Creative selection: people may prompt, curate, reject, revise, and approve generated material.
  • Legal administration: contracts, rights clearances, releases, likeness permissions, and delivery obligations require human accountability.
  • Finishing: editing, sound, music, mastering, quality control, and distribution still need to be organized and approved.
  • Publicity: the company—not FellinAI—announced the project and makes its claims to audiences and the press.

The available sources do not provide a technical specification for FellinAI, identify its underlying models, show an audit trail of its decisions, or disclose what percentage of the final work would be generated without conventional human intervention.

Are there human actors?

Reports connect the project with Actor+, an in-house operation associated with Iervolino that supplies digital performers or digital likenesses based on real actors. That is not the same as saying the film has no human actors.

It is useful to separate four possibilities:

  1. A real actor performs on set and appears in the finished film.
  2. A real actor licenses a digital likeness for a specific performance or character.
  3. A synthetic character is created without representing a particular individual.
  4. A generated face or performance is built from material whose permissions and compensation are unclear.

The reports available here do not fully establish the consent terms, compensation, duration, territory, reuse rights, or final credits for Actor+ participants. Panorama Audiovisual discusses the reported use of digital actors, while Mafab describes Actor+ in connection with digital likenesses of real actors.

Why did the announcement attract criticism?

The project arrived during a broader dispute over synthetic performers and AI-generated entertainment, including backlash over the proposed representation of Tilly Norwood, a computer-generated “AI actress.” Performers, directors, writers, and other workers have raised concerns that AI branding could obscure or weaken the contribution of human professionals.

The main concerns include:

  • replacement of directors, actors, writers, and crew;
  • training data and copyright disputes;
  • consent and compensation for digital replicas;
  • unclear responsibility when an AI system produces harmful or infringing material;
  • the absence of consistent disclosure and crediting standards; and
  • marketing claims that describe a software pipeline as autonomous artistry.

Directors UK has been reported as arguing that AI cannot replace human vision. That is an industry position, not proof that every AI-assisted production is artistically invalid. Likewise, the existence of criticism does not establish that the project violates a specific guild rule or law. Any such conclusion would require the relevant agreement, jurisdiction, contracts, and production facts.

The producer’s argument

Iervolino has presented the project as an alternative creative and production route rather than a simple replacement for traditional cinema. His argument is that AI could make difficult-to-finance projects possible under different economic conditions and enable new forms of visual experimentation.

Those are proposed advantages, not demonstrated results for this film. No verified production budget, cost comparison, completion record, or independent assessment is supplied in the available reporting.

Has the film been released?

Status as of August 18, 2026:

  • Announcement: verified on October 1, 2025.
  • Film: The Sweet Idleness.
  • AI entity: FellinAI.
  • Reported target: February 2026 completion or debut.
  • Public release, festival premiere, theatrical distribution, streaming availability, and final credits: not independently confirmed in the searched sources.

A trailer or promotional image would demonstrate that promotional material exists; it would not by itself prove how the feature was made or who made its creative decisions. The project should therefore be described as announced, planned, or promoted as AI-directed unless reliable primary evidence confirms completion and release.

What would prove the AI-director claim?

A serious assessment would require more than a company announcement. Useful evidence would include:

  • final screen credits and production notes;
  • a clear account of which decisions FellinAI made and which humans approved;
  • the identity or category of the underlying model or models;
  • workflow logs, version histories, or behind-the-scenes documentation;
  • details of actor contracts and digital-likeness permissions;
  • festival, distributor, or platform listings confirming the film’s status; and
  • an explanation of what “entirely” modifies—direction, visual generation, or the whole production.

Until that evidence is available, the most accurate description is a feature announced as AI-directed within a human-supervised production. It is an important test of how the film industry defines authorship and automation, but it is not settled proof that a machine has replaced a director.
