Pixar’s seven-minute short Bao was made available free on YouTube in December 2018, after its theatrical run with Incredibles 2. That does not confirm a free, official stream today. Check YouTube for a verified Pixar or Disney upload first; if it is unavailable or blocked in your country, the complete short is currently listed on Disney+, which requires a paid subscription.

How to check YouTube safely
- Search YouTube for Pixar Bao or Bao Pixar short film.
- Choose an upload from an official Pixar, Disney or clearly verified studio channel.
- Check that the title, artwork, approximately seven-minute runtime and description match the 2018 short.
- If the historical URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYaRZ4TNfus says “video unavailable,” do not replace it with an unverified mirror.
A video can be free when no payment is required to play that specific upload. A film being “included” with Disney+ means access comes through a paid subscription, not that the viewing is free.
What happened in 2018?
BGR reported on December 18, 2018 that Pixar had uploaded Bao to YouTube so people who missed its theatrical presentation could watch it online at no charge. The short had opened in U.S. theaters on June 15, 2018, attached to Incredibles 2.

What is Bao about?
Pixar describes Bao as the story of an aging Chinese mother experiencing empty-nest syndrome. She receives another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings comes to life, then confronts the painful reality that a child eventually grows beyond a parent’s protection.
The film is only about seven minutes long. Disney+ categorizes it as Animation and Fantasy and lists a G rating. Domee Shi wrote and directed it, and Becky Neiman-Cobb produced it, according to Pixar’s official materials.

Why the short became so notable
Bao places a specifically Chinese-Canadian family experience inside a story about separation, care and independence that many parents recognize. Its food, family dynamics and visual storytelling give the premise cultural specificity without requiring a long setup.
It was also a major early statement from Shi, who later became one of Pixar’s prominent creative voices. Pixar’s biography of Shi records the Academy Award win for Best Animated Short Film.

Spoiler warning: the emotional turn
Stop here if you want to experience the short without knowing its major reveal.
The film’s fantasy ultimately becomes a metaphor for a parent’s fear of losing a child. Its final movement reframes the mother’s behavior as grief, love and the struggle to accept that protection cannot last forever. That turn is why descriptions calling the film “heartbreaking” have endured, but it is best encountered without advance detail.

Regional restrictions and legality
- YouTube rights can differ by country; an upload may be blocked, removed or replaced.
- Disney+ availability, ratings, subtitles and prices vary by market and can change.
- A VPN may show a different catalog but can still encounter playback or rights restrictions.
- A page demanding a download, redirecting through several domains or hiding its rights holder is not a safe substitute for an official stream.
Pixar’s short-films catalog is a reliable reference for the film, but its listing should not be described as a free full-length player unless the complete short is visibly playable there.

Is Disney+ worth it for one seven-minute short?
For a one-off viewing, a legitimate free YouTube upload is the better fit if one is available in your region. Disney+ makes more sense for viewers who also want Pixar, Disney, Marvel, Star Wars and other catalog titles; subscribing solely for Bao means paying for a broader service rather than for a free stream.
