PATH is a 130-minute, 2025 hybrid docufilm directed by Firouz FarmanFarmaian. It follows the creation of The Gates of Turan, the project presented for the first Kyrgyz pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale, and argues that the journey—through Kyrgyz landscapes, negotiations, materials and memories—is itself the work. The result is an ambitious record of an artistic undertaking that also behaves like an artwork, pairing a road-movie structure with a production diary, self-portrait and visual essay.
What is PATH about?
The film travels from Kyrgyzstan’s Tian Shan region toward Venice as FarmanFarmaian and his collaborators develop The Gates of Turan. Rather than treating the pavilion unveiling as the only climax, the film gives equal weight to the practical and emotional route: sourcing materials, discussing ideas, working with makers, confronting delays and carrying memories across borders.
The official film description presents a movement from the Tian Shan to Venice. Independent critic Sébastien Léo finds that the road, production problems and negotiations remain central, making the film less a conventional behind-the-scenes feature than a meditation on how an international artwork comes into being.

FarmanFarmaian says the project began as an art film called Jol, the Kyrgyz word for “path.” He initially shot material for the pavilion’s videosphere. According to his account, the project shifted toward documentary after an attempted production-company transition stalled the process; he later recognized that the journey itself was the story and reshaped the work as PATH.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That explanation is the director’s account of the film’s origin, not an independently documented production chronology. It does, however, clarify why the finished film keeps its conceptual-art instincts: it is interested in movement, repetition and visual association as much as in delivering information.
How does PATH approach Kyrgyz cultural preservation?
The film treats preservation as a living practice rather than the display of an artifact. Its cultural frame brings the Persian Shahnameh into dialogue with the Kyrgyz epic Manas, while wool, textiles, ornament, architecture and music appear as working forms that can enter contemporary art without being reduced to decoration.
Collaboration in the Kochkor Valley
Léo’s review identifies work with Altyn Kol craftswomen in the Kochkor Valley, alongside local scholars, institutions and makers. FarmanFarmaian likewise says he worked directly with the craftswomen and conducted research with scholars and institutions in Bishkek. Those statements describe his intended method; the available criticism does not independently verify every stage of the collaboration.

Tradition without embalming it
The film’s central question is how traditions can remain meaningful in the present without becoming museum objects or romantic images of a vanished past. Its answer is practical: let inherited forms remain in use, let their makers shape the process, and place them in conversation with new audiences rather than isolating them as heritage symbols.
What does the film say about art and political change?
In an interview with Patrick Roy, FarmanFarmaian said: “Art does not necessarily change political realities by confronting them directly. Sometimes its power lies in changing the space in which people encounter one another and imagine what might be possible.” PATH embodies that idea through meetings, shared labor and the movement between Kyrgyzstan and Venice. Its politics are relational: the film watches people negotiate how histories can be encountered together.
A Tokyo festival review reads the film as crossing borders between history and the present, and between national customs and different audiences. That is an affirmative, essayistic interpretation rather than a conventional verdict, but it captures the film’s idealistic ambition.

What works best in the film?
The strongest passages make materials think. Wool, woven surfaces, carved or architectural details and layered landscapes are not merely illustrations of Kyrgyz identity; they become evidence of decisions, labor and memory. The production details also give the film texture: viewers see that a biennale pavilion depends on transport, permissions, timing and the physical behavior of materials, not just an artist’s concept.
This attention to process keeps the film from becoming a promotional account of a finished installation. The Venice presentation matters, but the film insists that the route to it contains its own meanings and failures.
Where does PATH struggle?
Léo praises the film’s material and visual ambition while finding its hybrid form uneven. FarmanFarmaian is simultaneously director, protagonist and pavilion artist, and that concentration of authorship can limit the space available to collaborators as independent narrative centers. The same self-awareness that gives the film personality can also make it feel self-mythologizing.

The review also argues that recurring visual symbolism becomes overly insistent. Whether that repetition is persuasive will depend on a viewer’s tolerance for essay-film language: the motifs create continuity, but they can sometimes announce their significance instead of allowing it to emerge.
Two productive tensions
| Question | What the film gains | What it risks |
|---|---|---|
| Formal experimentation or narrative clarity? | A layered road movie that treats process as meaning. | An uneven structure when visual associations overtake explanation. |
| Artist’s viewpoint or collaborator autonomy? | A clear personal through-line connecting Kyrgyzstan and Venice. | Other participants may remain supporting figures in the artist’s story. |
| Living preservation or heritage symbol? | Craft and epic traditions appear active, adaptable and contemporary. | Repeated symbolism can simplify the complexity the film wants to honor. |
Who should watch PATH?
It suits viewers drawn to artist documentaries, process films and visually ambitious nonfiction rather than fast-moving exhibition coverage. Anyone interested in Central Asian cultural practice will find an accessible entry point through Manas, the Shahnameh and the Kochkor Valley collaborations, although the film is more interpretive than encyclopedic. Viewers seeking a tightly reported account of every contributor or a neutral institutional history of the pavilion may find its artist-centered approach limiting.
Where can you watch it?
The official film information lists a 130-minute runtime and provides a contact route, but the available material does not establish current United States streaming, rental or physical-media availability. No DVD, Blu-ray or soundtrack release is confirmed. A March 2026 industry announcement said the film had its European premiere at that year’s European Film Market and was slated for the Madrid Film Festival; that announcement described a planned appearance at publication time, so it should not be treated as a current festival listing without checking the event directly.

Readers who want cultural context may look for a translation or printed edition of the Manas epic, but no specific edition is identified here and such a book should not be read as filmmaker-endorsed.
Is PATH a successful cultural-preservation film?
It is most successful when preservation is shown as collaboration, labor and continued use. The film’s visual language makes memory feel active, while its road structure demonstrates that cultural exchange involves setbacks as well as declarations. Its limitation is inseparable from its strength: because FarmanFarmaian places himself at the center, the film sometimes asks viewers to accept his interpretation of collaboration rather than fully redistributing narrative authority. That tension makes PATH worth discussing even when its symbolism becomes too emphatic.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is PATH?
The official film page lists a runtime of 130 minutes. It is identified as a 2025 production directed by Firouz FarmanFarmaian.
What do “Jol” and “PATH” mean in the film’s development?
FarmanFarmaian says Jol was the original art-project title and the Kyrgyz word for “path.” He later recast the project as PATH when he concluded that the making journey, rather than only the pavilion result, was the subject.
Which epics are connected in the film?
The film places the Kyrgyz epic Manas in dialogue with the Persian Shahnameh. They function as cultural reference points for thinking about memory, storytelling and contemporary artistic exchange.
Does the film show the pavilion opening in Venice?
The Venice presentation is part of the film’s destination, but the narrative gives substantial attention to the road there: materials, negotiations, collaborators and setbacks. The unveiling is not presented as the sole payoff.
