Google Podcasts is no longer a supported Android destination in the United States: Google shut it down after April 2, 2024, and directed listeners toward YouTube Music. If you still have a Google Podcasts subscription list, the important decision is whether to move it directly to YouTube Music or export an OPML file and choose another app.
These eight Android podcast apps cover the main alternatives, from open-source listening and privacy-friendly tools to full media platforms. For most former Google Podcasts users, Pocket Casts is the smoothest OPML-based move, AntennaPod is the strongest open-source option, and YouTube Music is the least complicated route if you want Google to handle the transfer.

The last four apps are alternatives worth considering, but the documented migration instructions below focus on the services with verified Google Podcasts or OPML procedures. App menus and import policies can change, so do not treat an unverified import claim as a guarantee.
1. YouTube Music: the official Google route
YouTube Music is the replacement Google intended Google Podcasts users to adopt. For users signed in to a Google account, Google designed the transfer to carry over podcast subscriptions and listening history, with synchronization across devices using that account.

This is the simplest choice if you do not want to handle an export file. It also makes sense if YouTube Music is already your music app and you prefer one account and one library.
The trade-off is the interface. YouTube Music is not a direct visual replacement for Google Podcasts. It is built around music as well as spoken-word programs, and its podcast area is substantially more cluttered than the old Google Podcasts experience. It is convenient, but not especially minimalist.
Choose YouTube Music if:
- You want Google’s intended migration path.
- You already use YouTube Music on several devices.
- Keeping listening activity tied to your Google account matters more than having a dedicated podcast interface.
2. Pocket Casts: the cleanest OPML migration
Pocket Casts is a strong fit for listeners who want a dedicated app with a polished library and synchronization between devices. A Pocket Casts account is optional on mobile, but signing in enables free synchronization of your podcast library and listening history.
Its free tier is usable without Pocket Casts Plus. Plus adds features such as desktop and web apps, custom folders, 20 GB of cloud storage for audio files, Apple Watch and Wear OS playback, and custom themes and icons. Pocket Casts also displays sponsored recommendations in its Discover area, so it should not be described as completely ad-free.
Import Google Podcasts into Pocket Casts on Android
- Export your Google Podcasts subscriptions as an OPML file. You can use Google Takeout or Google Podcasts’ export option while it was available.
- Make sure you have the actual file named
Subscriptions.opml. If Google gave you a ZIP archive, extract it first. - Open Pocket Casts.
- Tap Profile.
- Tap the settings cog.
- Choose Import & Export OPML.
- Tap Select file and choose
Subscriptions.opml.
Do not select the ZIP file itself. Pocket Casts expects the extracted OPML document, usually found under Google Podcasts > Subscriptions.
Import through Pocket Casts on the web
- Open the Pocket Casts web app and click your Profile icon in the upper-right.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Import & Export.
- Choose Import Podcasts.
- Select the OPML file and click Open.
Pocket Casts supports OPML import in its Android and iOS mobile apps and its web app. The Mac and Windows desktop apps do not support the import directly; use the web app instead.
If a show does not appear in search, paste its RSS feed into the search bar. This is particularly useful for paid or private podcasts that are not listed in the public directory.
3. AntennaPod: the open-source Android choice
AntennaPod is a good replacement for listeners who want an open-source, Android-focused app without advertisements placed in the application itself. Ads embedded in individual podcast episodes can still play.

To add a show, tap the … button in the bottom-right corner, then choose + Add Podcast. You can search, select a suggested podcast, paste an RSS or Atom feed, or import an OPML file. AntennaPod also accepts pcast:// and itpc:// links.
Its feed support is useful for documentary listeners following independent publishers that may not appear in a directory. If you have the direct RSS address, you do not need to wait for the app’s search index to find the program.
YouTube channel limitations
AntennaPod can subscribe to a YouTube channel feed, but it is not a full YouTube video downloader. Try a channel URL such as:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/CHANNEL_IDIf automatic recognition fails, use:
https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=<CHANNEL_ID>Replace <CHANNEL_ID> with the actual channel ID. AntennaPod can notify you about new items in the feed, but it cannot automatically download the YouTube videos. YouTube feeds may also have no associated image because YouTube does not include one in the feed.

Allow mobile-data updates
If downloads or streaming stop when you leave Wi-Fi, open Settings from the navigation drawer, go to Downloads, then Mobile Updates. Enable the relevant options for downloading and streaming over mobile data.
AntennaPod can synchronize through the open-source gpodder.net service. Community-supported servers may be less reliable than the synchronization systems operated by major commercial podcast apps, so it is best for listeners who value control over seamless multi-device continuity.

4. Podcast Addict: for listeners who want controls
Podcast Addict is one of the frequently recommended Android alternatives for people who want a feature-heavy podcast manager rather than a deliberately stripped-down player. It is suited to large libraries, detailed playback preferences, and listeners who like tuning the app to their habits.
The downside is the same feature density that makes it attractive to power users: new users may need more time to understand its menus and settings. Because the available migration material does not establish a current version number or a definitive current OPML menu path, verify the import labels in the version installed on your phone rather than following an outdated guide.
Podcast Addict is a particularly sensible shortlist candidate if you manage many documentary series, rotate between different playback speeds, or want more control than Google Podcasts offered. It is less compelling if your priority is an uncluttered, almost invisible player.
5. Spotify: practical when music and podcasts already share one home
Spotify makes sense for users who already listen to music there and want podcasts in the same Android app. You avoid maintaining another service, and your existing Spotify account, recommendations, and playback habits remain in one place.
It is not the best choice simply because it is familiar. Spotify’s podcast experience is part of a music platform, not a dedicated replacement for the focused Google Podcasts layout. Also, do not rely on old claims that Spotify definitely does or does not support OPML import. A source published on April 2, 2024 reported no official OPML import at that time and mentioned the third-party Pod Importer service, but that does not establish the feature’s status today.

6. Castbox: a discovery-oriented alternative
Castbox is worth considering if finding new programs is as important as managing the shows you already follow. Its broad catalogue and discovery features make it suitable for listeners who move between documentaries, interviews, news, and independent productions.

It is less appealing if what you liked about Google Podcasts was its restraint. Discovery-led podcast apps commonly put recommendations and promoted material close to the subscriptions you deliberately chose. Before committing, check how the current Android app handles OPML and whether its account and synchronization model suit your devices.
For a small library, manually searching for each show may be faster than building a migration around an unverified import route. For a large library, preserve the OPML file even after importing it: it is a useful backup of your subscription list.

7. Podcast Republic: a detailed library manager
Podcast Republic appeals to listeners who want granular control over their subscriptions, playback, downloads, and organization. It is a natural candidate for people who treat podcasts as a substantial media library rather than an occasional listen.
Its more extensive settings can help separate downloaded documentaries from short news programs, manage storage, and establish different playback habits. They can also make the first setup feel heavier than Google Podcasts.
If you migrate here, check the current app’s import instructions rather than assuming that every OPML implementation behaves identically. OPML normally carries a list of subscriptions; it does not automatically recreate Google Podcasts downloads, queues, playback positions, or show-specific settings.

As with Castbox and Podcast Republic, keep your original OPML export until you have checked several shows manually. An import can appear successful while still omitting private feeds or entries with unusual RSS metadata.
How to export your Google Podcasts subscriptions
The most portable route is an OPML export. Google’s migration options included transferring subscriptions and listening history to YouTube Music or exporting subscriptions as a standard OPML file for another podcast application.
Pocket Casts documents this Google Takeout route:
- Open Google Takeout’s Podcasts export page.
- Click Next Step.
- Under transfer to, choose Add to Drive or Send download link via email.
- Click Create export.
- Download the resulting ZIP file.
- Extract the file named
Subscriptions.opmlfromGoogle Podcasts > Subscriptions. - Import that extracted file into the podcast app of your choice.
OPML is a subscription-list format, not a complete backup of the old application. Expect to recreate downloads, queues, playback positions, and per-show settings unless the destination app offers a separate, documented migration for them.
Which replacement should you pick?
- Choose YouTube Music if you want Google’s intended transfer and already use a Google account across devices.
- Choose Pocket Casts if you want the clearest documented OPML process, a polished dedicated podcast app, and optional synchronization.
- Choose AntennaPod if open-source software, direct RSS subscriptions, and control matter more than commercial-grade synchronization.
- Choose Podcast Addict or Podcast Republic if you need a large number of settings and library-management controls.
- Choose Spotify if your music subscription and podcast listening already belong in the same app, but verify its current import options first.
- Choose Castbox or Podurama if discovery and a broader service experience are more important than recreating Google Podcasts exactly.
