NYT Connections No. 775 answers
Yellow: HUSH-HUSH
MUM, PRIVATE, QUIET, SECRET
Each word relates to secrecy, privacy, or withholding information. “Keep mum” is the phrase that helps confirm MUM belongs here, rather than with the other words that may suggest a family or name-related connection.
Green: STATE ABBREVIATIONS
IN, MA, OH, OK
These are the standard two-letter postal abbreviations for Indiana, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Oklahoma:
- IN — Indiana
- MA — Massachusetts
- OH — Ohio
- OK — Oklahoma
The four short entries may initially look like ordinary words or interjections, but their shared format makes this group stand out.
Rank #3
Blue: BASEBALL CALLS
BALL, FAIR, FOUL, OUT
These are all baseball terms or calls associated with an umpire’s decision. A ball is a pitch outside the strike zone, fair and foul describe batted balls, and out ends a batter’s or runner’s turn.
Purple: QUEEN ___
BED, BEE, MARY, MOTHER
Place “Queen” before each word to form a familiar expression or name:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- queen bed
- queen bee
- Queen Mary
- Queen Mother
This is a phrase-completion category rather than a single subject area, which makes it the puzzle’s most deceptive group. The category is QUEEN ___; FOUL does not belong in it.
Rank #4
Why this puzzle can be tricky
The four two-letter entries—IN, MA, OH, and OK—are the cleanest starting point once you recognize them as postal abbreviations. Before that, they can look like miscellaneous short words.
There are also several misleading connections. MUM, MA, and MOTHER can appear to form a family-related cluster, while MARY may seem to belong with names or people. FOUL is another trap: it may look like it could fit a phrase-based group, but it is needed to complete the baseball set with BALL, FAIR, and OUT.
A dependable solving order is:
- Spot the secrecy group: MUM, PRIVATE, QUIET, and SECRET.
- Lock in the four state abbreviations: IN, MA, OH, and OK.
- Use the remaining baseball vocabulary to identify BALL, FAIR, FOUL, and OUT.
- Confirm the final four as Queen ___ phrases: BED, BEE, MARY, and MOTHER.
