Gus Walz’s emotional “That’s my dad” reaction became one of the defining personal moments of the Democratic National Convention on August 21, 2024. His sister, Hope, also reacted from the audience as their father, Tim Walz, spoke about family and fertility treatment during his vice-presidential nomination acceptance speech.
On August 21, 2024, Gus Walz became one of the most memorable faces of the Democratic National Convention when he stood in the audience, cried, clapped, pointed toward the stage and appeared to say, “That’s my dad.”
The 17-year-old was reacting to his father, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who had just accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination in Chicago. During the speech, Walz spoke directly to his family—his wife, Gwen, and their children, Hope and Gus—and described the years of fertility treatment that preceded the birth of their daughter.
Gus Walz’s “That’s my dad” moment
Near the end of the speech’s personal section, Tim Walz said: “Hope, Gus, Gwen—you are my whole world. I love you all so much.” Cameras then showed the Walz family in the convention audience.

Hope Walz, the couple’s older child, became visibly emotional and made a heart shape with her hands toward her father. Gus, their younger child, cried and applauded. He stood, pointed toward the stage and mouthed—or, in some descriptions, said—the words, “That’s my dad.”
The exchange quickly spread online and was widely described in coverage of the convention as the emotional high point of Walz’s acceptance speech. The moment stood out because it moved the focus away from campaign language and toward an unmistakably personal family interaction: a son visibly proud of his father as his father addressed the country.
What Tim Walz said about fertility treatment
Walz connected his family’s story to his argument for access to reproductive and fertility care. He said that he and Gwen had spent years undergoing unsuccessful treatments before they were able to have a child. Their daughter, Hope, was named to reflect what the experience had meant to them.

The speech and subsequent discussion also produced an important terminology issue. Walz sometimes referred to “IVF” or to fertility treatments such as IVF when speaking broadly about access to fertility care. However, later reporting clarified that the specific treatment Gwen Walz underwent was intrauterine insemination, or IUI.

IUI and IVF are not the same treatment
In IUI, sperm is placed directly into the uterus to increase the chance of fertilization. The procedure does not involve fertilizing embryos in a laboratory. IVF, or in vitro fertilization, involves fertilization outside the body and the later transfer of an embryo into the uterus.
For that reason, it is inaccurate to say without qualification that Gus and Hope were conceived through IVF. The more precise description is that the Walzes had children after years of fertility treatment, with Gwen later identifying IUI as the specific treatment involved. Walz’s broader political references to IVF were part of a discussion about access to fertility care, not a precise description of the procedure that resulted in Hope’s birth.

Who are Gus and Hope Walz?
Gus Walz and Hope Walz are Tim and Gwen Walz’s two children. Contemporary reporting identified Hope as 23 and Gus as 17 during the August 2024 convention; those ages describe them at the time of the event, not necessarily today.
In an August 2024 statement to People, the Walzes said Gus has a nonverbal learning disorder, ADHD and an anxiety disorder. They described him as “brilliant” and as an excellent son and brother, and said his differences were not a setback but his “secret power.” That wording belongs to the Walzes and should be understood as their description of their son, not as an independent medical or psychological assessment.

The observable facts are simpler: he became emotional, clapped, stood, pointed toward his father and expressed pride. The public moment does not establish why he reacted in any particular way, beyond what viewers could reasonably see as a strong expression of affection and admiration.

Why the family reaction resonated
The scene brought together several themes from Walz’s speech. He presented politics through the experiences of family, parenthood, neighbors, public education and responsibility for children. His discussion of infertility and fertility treatment made the speech personal, while the camera’s view of Hope and Gus gave the audience an immediate response to that story.
Hope’s heart gesture and Gus’s tears and applause also created a contrast with the formal setting. The convention stage was built for political spectacle, but the family’s reaction looked intimate and unscripted. That contrast helped explain why the clip became a defining image of the night, even for viewers less interested in the speech’s policy arguments.
News coverage published on August 22, 2024, including reports from The Washington Post and the Star Tribune, focused on Gus’s reaction and Hope’s response as the speech’s emotional climax. The event itself took place the previous evening, on August 21, when Walz accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination at the DNC in Chicago.

The moment in context
- August 21, 2024: Tim Walz accepted the Democratic vice-presidential nomination during the third night of the Democratic National Convention.
- During the speech: He discussed the Walzes’ years of fertility treatment, addressed Gwen, Hope and Gus, and told them they were his whole world.
- In the audience: Hope made a heart with her hands, while Gus cried, clapped, stood and pointed toward his father.
- Afterward: Gus’s apparent “That’s my dad” reaction circulated widely online and became one of the convention’s most recognizable personal moments.
- In later reporting: The family’s specific fertility treatment was clarified as IUI, rather than IVF.
Ultimately, the clip resonated because it made a national political event feel briefly like a family gathering. Tim Walz was speaking as a nominee, but Gus and Hope’s visible reactions showed the audience the father their speech was also about.
