Northern Kentucky University film students are featured in Laure Quinlivan’s hourlong documentary Connecting Cultures: Cincinnati to Guatemala, premiering on WCPO 9 at 8 p.m. Thursday, November 12, 2026. Viewers can also attend a 7 p.m. screening at the Mariemont Theater on Monday, November 16, hosted by Women in Film Cincinnati, followed by a filmmaker question-and-answer session. The documentary traces nearly three decades of links between Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and Guatemala through education, coffee, immigration, churches, schools and neighborhood businesses.

What is Connecting Cultures: Cincinnati to Guatemala about?

The film presents a locally grounded account of how people and institutions in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have influenced, and been influenced by, Guatemala. Quinlivan began filming during a February trip with the Cincinnati Rotary Club and Cooperative for Education, then hired recent NKU graduate Emma Tallent to film current students during their March study-abroad trip.

Its subjects include Guatemalan coffee production, literacy and school-completion work, immigrant services, Spanish-language ministry and Guatemalan-owned businesses in the region. Quinlivan, a former WCPO Channel 9 lead investigative reporter, said she hopes Cincinnati viewers will see Guatemalans “in a new and positive light” and consider mentoring a Guatemalan student or supporting a local Guatemalan restaurant.

How are NKU students involved?

NKU’s role is central rather than incidental. Professor Sara Drabik has led Electronic Media and Broadcasting students to Guatemala since 2016. During spring break, students spend an immersive week at a coffee plantation on the south slope of a Guatemalan volcano, earn three academic credits and produce short documentaries.

Drabik said, “Several of my students have not been to another country before.” She describes the experience as a way for students to build confidence and empathy while working in a setting where they may not look or speak like everyone around them. Axios also reports that NKU and University of Cincinnati students traveled to Olga Hazard’s plantation to study abroad and make videos. The Mariemont event is expected to include featured students, interns and members of the filmmaking team, although a complete student roster has not been announced.

What connects Cincinnati and Guatemala?

Education and literacy

Cooperative for Education’s work links local supporters with Guatemalan schools and literacy programs. A 2026 Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA release reports that two in three people in Guatemala can now read, compared with one in three previously; that figure is presented as a release-reported statistic rather than an independently reverified study here.

Coffee

Hazard’s plantation supplies Coffee Emporium, a Cincinnati business that imports directly from the farm. The coffee is reported as available at Kroger, Jungle Jim’s and online, giving viewers a tangible way to follow the film’s cross-border connection. Availability and sellers can change, so check current listings before buying.

Immigrant communities and businesses

Population figures require a geography label. Violeta Colman, reported by the NKyTribune in 2026, counted more than 18,000 Hispanic immigrants across Kenton, Campbell and Boone counties. An Axios report citing a Neilsberg Research analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data estimated about 12,400 people of Guatemalan origin in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. These are different areas and population definitions, so they should not be treated as competing counts.

The Hispanic Chamber release also reported Greg Robinson of Price Hill Will saying that 50% of active Price Hill businesses are owned by Guatemalans. The documentary uses entrepreneurs, churches and service organizations to show how those communities participate in neighborhood life.

Which viewing option should I choose?

The WCPO broadcast is the simplest choice for viewers who want to watch at home at a fixed time. The Mariemont screening requires attending a venue but adds a live discussion with Quinlivan and student contributors, making it the better option for viewers who want context about filming, study abroad and the people featured.

Where does the coffee connected to the film come from?
