NFL and Peacock: The Shift From Traditional TV to Streaming for Sports

The NFL’s move toward Peacock is a hybrid shift, not the end of broadcast television. Here is how simulcasts, exclusive games, Prime Video, Sunday Ticket, and Peacock change the way fans watch.

The NFL has not abandoned traditional television for Peacock. It is building a hybrid distribution system: broadcast networks preserve broad, often free over-the-air reach, while Peacock and other streaming services add device flexibility, digital features, subscription revenue, and selected exclusive games.

For fans, that means more ways to watch but a less predictable map of where each game belongs. Sunday Night Football is available through NBC and Peacock, Thursday Night Football is on Prime Video, out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games are sold through NFL Sunday Ticket, and selected NFL events may require Peacock specifically.

The NFL’s streaming shift is an expansion, not a television replacement

The simplest way to understand the NFL’s relationship with Peacock is to separate distribution from exclusivity.

  • Distribution expansion: A game that appears on NBC can also be streamed on Peacock, giving viewers another way to watch it on a smart television, phone, computer, game console, or streaming device.
  • Exclusive streaming: A game is assigned to Peacock without a simultaneous traditional broadcast outlet, making the service necessary for viewers who want to watch it at home.

Peacock does both. It is the streaming extension of NBC’s Sunday Night Football package, but it also receives selected exclusive games. That makes it strategically important to NBCUniversal and the NFL without making it a replacement for CBS, FOX, ESPN, ABC, Amazon, or the broader broadcast ecosystem.

The NFL’s March 2021 media-rights announcement set the framework for the current arrangement. The agreements run from the 2023 season through the 2033 season and preserve the major broadcast and cable relationships while expanding digital distribution. NBC retained Sunday Night Football; CBS and FOX retained the Sunday-afternoon conference packages; ESPN and ABC retained Monday Night Football and related rights; and Amazon received the league’s first fully digital national package for Thursday Night Football.

The league presented the arrangement as preserving NFL access on over-the-air television while making games available in more digital environments. That foundation remains important. It does not mean every future event will have exactly the same broadcast and streaming outlet, but it does mean that “the NFL is moving to streaming” is too broad a description. The more accurate story is that the league is selling premium live sports through several overlapping windows.

Where Peacock fits into the NFL rights map

Peacock is primarily the streaming home for NBC’s NFL programming. Under the 2021 agreements, the service was designated to simulcast all Sunday Night Football games and carry an exclusive feed of selected NFL games during the agreement term.

A simulcast is the same live game made available through two distribution channels. In this case, Sunday Night Football can be shown on NBC and streamed through Peacock. A viewer who lacks a convenient NBC signal, is watching on a tablet, or prefers a connected-TV app can use Peacock without needing a conventional cable login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An exclusive game works differently. If a game is exclusive to Peacock, NBC may promote it and the NFL may distribute it nationally, but the viewer generally needs access to Peacock—or must watch through a shared viewing location such as a bar, restaurant, friend’s home, or workplace.

What Peacock does and does not provide

Viewer need Typical destination What it means
Sunday Night Football NBC and Peacock Peacock extends NBC’s broadcast package to streaming devices and online viewers.
Selected Peacock-exclusive games Peacock A Peacock subscription or other authorized access is required for the exclusive event.
Local Sunday-afternoon games CBS or FOX, with market-dependent digital access The game depends on the local broadcast market and the relevant network’s distribution options.
Thursday Night Football Amazon Prime Video Prime Video holds the national digital package; it does not include Peacock exclusives or Sunday Ticket by default.
Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube TV or YouTube Primetime Channels This is a separate package for Sunday-afternoon games unavailable in the viewer’s local market.
Selected league content and mobile access NFL+ and other official NFL outlets Availability depends on the content, device, location, and current plan rules.

The NFL’s current guide lists Peacock alongside NFL+, Sunday Ticket, FOX One, Paramount+, ESPN, Amazon, Netflix, and other official destinations. That list is useful precisely because it shows how fragmented the viewing experience has become: there is no single streaming service that automatically supplies every NFL game.

Peacock’s path from simulcasts to exclusive events

Peacock’s role became more consequential as NBCUniversal tested whether a major sports event could drive viewers directly into a streaming service. Sunday Night Football provided a relatively low-friction starting point because the same game remained on NBC. Fans could use Peacock without losing access to the familiar broadcast window.

Exclusive games introduced a stronger business proposition. Instead of merely offering a second screen, Peacock became the only national destination for a specific event. That creates urgency: a fan who wants to watch cannot simply wait for a replay, choose another network, or assume an antenna will be enough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the 2025 season, Peacock’s Sunday Night Football guide said every Sunday Night Football game would stream live on the service and identified one Week 17 game as exclusive to Peacock. The NFL’s 2025 schedule materials designated that event as a Saturday-night Week 17 game.

The model continued into the announced 2026 schedule information. The NFL’s schedule-release materials identify NBC, Peacock, and NFL+ among the outlets associated with announced matchups, while Peacock’s NFL page identifies the season-opening rematch of Super Bowl LX as airing on both NBC and Peacock. Those details illustrate the two sides of the strategy: high-profile simulcasts can normalize streaming, while selected exclusives can push viewers to adopt it.

Schedules and platform assignments can change, particularly for future games. Fans should confirm the listing for a specific matchup rather than assume that every NBC game or every playoff game has the same distribution pattern.

Why the January 2024 playoff game mattered

The clearest demonstration of Peacock’s importance came on January 13, 2024, when the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Miami Dolphins in an AFC Wild Card game. It was the NFL’s first exclusively live-streamed playoff game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That wording matters. NFL games had been streamed before. The distinction was that this playoff game was assigned exclusively to a streaming service rather than being simultaneously available through a conventional national broadcast outlet.

NBCUniversal reported that the game reached nearly 28 million viewers and that the average audience peaked at nearly 25 million during the highest quarter-hour. The company also described it as Peacock’s biggest day to that point.

Nielsen reported almost 3.9 billion viewing minutes for the game and said January 13, 2024 became the highest-streaming day on record at that time. Nielsen also counted 3.3 million viewers watching away from home. That last figure is an important qualification: a streaming-exclusive event does not mean every viewer personally bought a subscription. Some people watched in bars, at friends’ homes, at work, or in other shared settings.

The event showed both the upside and the friction of streaming exclusivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The upside

  • A premium playoff game could attract a massive audience through a streaming platform.
  • Peacock gained a high-profile reason for viewers to open the app or subscribe.
  • The NFL demonstrated that digital distribution could handle an event of national importance.
  • NBCUniversal gained a valuable test of live streaming, advertising, authentication, and audience measurement at scale.

The friction

  • Fans who expected a nationally important playoff game to be on broadcast television needed Peacock or an alternative viewing location.
  • Some households had to learn a new app or add another bill on short notice.
  • Streaming availability depended on broadband, device compatibility, account access, and the viewer’s location.
  • The event intensified criticism of a rights model in which different games are divided among different commercial platforms.

The game was therefore more than a ratings story. It was a consumer test of whether the NFL could use exclusivity to accelerate streaming adoption without losing the enormous reach associated with broadcast television.

Why the NFL and media companies want streaming distribution

1. More devices and more locations

Broadcast television is excellent at reaching an entire market at once, but streaming is designed for personal and portable viewing. Peacock can deliver NFL programming to compatible smart televisions, streaming sticks, mobile devices, computers, tablets, and game consoles. A viewer can watch in a home without a cable subscription, while traveling, or on a device that does not have an antenna or traditional TV input.

That flexibility is especially valuable to younger viewers, cord-cutters, and households that treat an internet connection as their primary television infrastructure. It also lets the league meet viewers where they already consume video rather than relying on a single screen in the living room.

2. Subscription acquisition and retention

A scripted series may take several episodes to persuade someone to subscribe. A live playoff game creates an immediate reason. If a fan’s team is playing that night, the value of access is concentrated into a few hours.

This is why exclusive sports rights are attractive to streaming services. They can drive new sign-ups, encourage existing customers to remain subscribed during the season, and create a recurring reason to return to the app. NBCUniversal described the 2024 playoff game as a major subscriber and engagement opportunity.

There is evidence of broader platform growth, but it should not be turned into an unsupported one-game causal claim. Comcast reported 36 million Peacock paid subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2024 and said Peacock revenue increased 28% year over year in that quarter. Those figures indicate that Peacock’s sports strategy operated within a growing business; they do not establish that the Chiefs-Dolphins game alone generated a specific number of subscriptions.

3. Advertising and audience data

Digital services can supplement conventional television measurement with information about authenticated viewing, devices, usage patterns, ad exposure, and engagement. The data is valuable to both the platform and advertisers, although the precise information collected and how it is used depends on the service’s policies and the viewer’s settings.

Streaming also enables features that are difficult to reproduce in a linear broadcast: live statistics, alternate presentations, replay controls, interactive elements, chat, social feeds, and personalized interfaces. The NFL’s 2021 rights announcement emphasized these types of digital innovation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Competition among platforms

The NFL can use its most valuable content to negotiate with several kinds of partners. Amazon uses Thursday Night Football to strengthen Prime Video. YouTube uses Sunday Ticket to expand YouTube TV and Primetime Channels. NBCUniversal uses Peacock to extend NBC’s sports portfolio and build its own streaming business.

This competition can increase the league’s leverage and diversify its revenue sources. It also changes the fan’s relationship with the sport: instead of going to one channel for a game, viewers increasingly navigate a marketplace of platforms, subscriptions, regional restrictions, and exclusive windows.

The wider NFL streaming migration

Amazon Prime Video and Thursday Night Football

Beginning with the 2023 season, Amazon Prime Video became the exclusive U.S. home of Thursday Night Football under a 10-year agreement covering 15 regular-season games and one preseason game each year. Amazon described it as the NFL’s first exclusive national broadcast package awarded to a digital streaming service.

That deal established that streaming could hold an entire recurring national package, not merely simulcast a broadcast network’s games. It also made Thursday night a separate subscription decision from Sunday Night Football. A household may have Peacock for NBC games and still need Prime Video for Thursday Night Football.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube and Sunday Ticket

YouTube became the exclusive U.S. distributor of NFL Sunday Ticket beginning with the 2023 season. The package is available through YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels and covers out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games.

Sunday Ticket is complementary to Peacock, not a replacement for it. A viewer who wants every Sunday-afternoon game unavailable locally may need Sunday Ticket, while a viewer who wants Sunday Night Football or a Peacock-exclusive game is dealing with a different rights package. The same subscription does not automatically solve both problems.

That distinction is one of the most important practical lessons of the NFL’s streaming model: “streaming the NFL” is not one product. It is a collection of products organized around different game windows.

What changes for fans

In the traditional television model, a household with an antenna or a cable package could find most nationally important games through a small group of familiar channels. In the hybrid model, “having NFL access” requires several checks.

  1. Identify the game window. Is it Sunday afternoon, Sunday night, Thursday night, Monday night, a playoff game, or a special event?
  2. Check whether the game is local or out of market. Sunday Ticket is designed for out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games, not every NFL broadcast.
  3. Confirm the platform. NBC and Peacock, Prime Video, CBS, FOX, YouTube, ESPN, NFL+, and other services have different roles.
  4. Check whether the event is exclusive. A game listed on Peacock may be a simulcast or may require Peacock because no equivalent broadcast is available.
  5. Verify the plan and location rules. Pricing, advertising conditions, student offers, territorial availability, and device rules can change.
  6. Test the device before kickoff. Install the app, sign in, update the device, and verify the internet connection before a high-demand event begins.

The benefits

  • More ways to watch on televisions, phones, tablets, computers, consoles, and streaming devices.
  • Portable access for viewers away from home.
  • Potentially easier access for cord-cutters who do not want a full cable package.
  • Digital features such as statistics, alternate feeds, replay controls, and personalized interfaces.
  • More competition among distributors, which can produce new viewing features and broader device support.

The costs

  • Multiple subscriptions and monthly bills.
  • Confusion over local, national, and out-of-market availability.
  • Exclusive games that are inaccessible to viewers who do not subscribe to the assigned platform.
  • Volatile pricing and changing plan names.
  • Greater dependence on broadband quality, app reliability, compatible hardware, and account access.

What Peacock costs and where it works

Peacock is available in the United States and certain U.S. territories rather than as a universally global service. Game availability can depend on the viewer’s location, the specific event, the season, and the rights arrangement in effect at that time.

Is streaming actually replacing broadcast television?

The available audience evidence points to coexistence rather than immediate replacement.

The 2024 Peacock-exclusive Wild Card game reached nearly 28 million viewers according to NBCUniversal, while Nielsen reported almost 3.9 billion viewing minutes and 3.3 million viewers watching away from home. That demonstrated that a streaming-exclusive event could produce extraordinary reach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

At the same time, Comcast reported that Sunday Night Football on NBC and Peacock averaged 23.5 million viewers during the 2025 season, its best viewership ever according to the company’s Total Audience Delivery measurement and 9% above the prior season. The figure combines NBC and Peacock and uses the company’s stated measurement system, so it should not be compared directly with the Nielsen figures for the 2024 playoff game as though they were identical measurements.

Still, the direction is clear. Streaming can add audience and engagement without eliminating the value of the broadcast window. NBC benefits from the reach and familiarity of its network, while Peacock gives the same package a digital home and provides a mechanism for testing exclusivity.

This is also why claims that Peacock has “made cable obsolete” go too far. Some fans can replace a cable package with an antenna, broadband, and selected streaming subscriptions. Others may find that following every relevant NFL window requires several services, which can cost as much as—or more than—parts of a traditional bundle.

A practical decision guide for NFL viewers

If you mainly watch Sunday Night Football

Start with NBC if you receive the local station through an antenna or television provider. Use Peacock when you prefer app-based viewing, lack convenient NBC access, or want to watch on a supported internet-connected device. Confirm the individual game listing because special-event distribution can differ from the normal Sunday-night pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want Thursday Night Football

Look for Thursday Night Football on Prime Video. This is a separate package from Peacock’s NBC inventory. Having Peacock does not by itself provide Amazon’s Thursday-night games.

If you want Sunday-afternoon games outside your local market

Consider NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube TV or YouTube Primetime Channels. It is designed for out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games and should be evaluated separately from local CBS and FOX access, Sunday Night Football, and Thursday Night Football.

If you want every nationally distributed event

Expect a multi-platform setup. Depending on the season and schedule, you may need access to broadcast channels plus Peacock, Prime Video, and Sunday Ticket, with ESPN or another service relevant to particular packages. No single Peacock subscription guarantees every game.

The long-term significance of Peacock

Peacock is a bridge between two business models. Broadcast television remains valuable because it delivers scale, familiarity, and free over-the-air reach. Streaming is valuable because it offers portability, direct customer relationships, measurable usage, flexible advertising, interactive features, and a recurring subscription business.

The NFL benefits from putting the same sport into both systems. It can preserve the mass audience of television while using premium events to teach viewers that a streaming application is a normal place to watch live sports. NBCUniversal, meanwhile, can use NFL programming to make Peacock more relevant than it would be as a library of entertainment alone.

The trade-off is fragmentation. Every exclusive game creates a stronger reason to subscribe to a service, but every additional service makes the viewing experience harder to understand. Fans gain device choice and flexibility while losing the simplicity of a single familiar channel.

The most likely direction is therefore continued hybrid distribution: broadcast television for reach, streaming for flexibility and platform economics, and selected exclusive games to encourage digital adoption. Peacock is not the end of NFL television. It is one of the clearest signs that the definition of NFL television is expanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Peacock show every NFL game?

No. Peacock is primarily the streaming home for NBC’s NFL programming and selected Peacock-exclusive events. Thursday Night Football is on Prime Video, out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games are handled through NFL Sunday Ticket, and local Sunday-afternoon games generally depend on CBS or FOX and the viewer’s market.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Was the January 2024 Chiefs-Dolphins game the first NFL game streamed?

No. It was the NFL’s first exclusively live-streamed playoff game. NFL games had been streamed previously; the significant distinction was that this AFC Wild Card game was not simultaneously available through a conventional national broadcast outlet.

Do I need cable to watch NFL games on Peacock?

Not necessarily. Peacock provides app-based access to eligible games, so a viewer may use a compatible smart television, streaming device, phone, tablet, computer, or game console with an appropriate Peacock plan. Whether you need other services depends on which NFL game windows you want to watch.

Is NFL Sunday Ticket included with Peacock?

No. NFL Sunday Ticket is a separate package distributed in the United States through YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels. It covers out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games and does not replace Peacock’s NBC programming or Peacock exclusives.

Can I watch Peacock outside the United States?

Peacock is available in the United States and certain U.S. territories, but it is not a universally global service. International NFL rights and streaming availability vary by country, so viewers outside the United States should check the official local rights holder rather than assume that a U.S. Peacock subscription will work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Peacock is not replacing broadcast television; it is becoming an essential additional distribution layer for selected NFL programming. The NFL can preserve television’s reach while using Peacock, Prime Video, YouTube, and other platforms to expand access, collect digital audience data, develop advertising and interactive features, and create subscription incentives. For fans, the benefit is flexibility. The cost is a more fragmented and potentially more expensive path to watching every game.
