Spin Wars is an 89-minute documentary about the rise of SoulCycle, Flywheel and Peloton—and the business culture that made boutique indoor cycling a lifestyle brand. Its most personal story comes from instructor and co-founder Ruth Zukerman, who says Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice told her in a meeting that she was no longer a SoulCycle partner. The film gives that account a new on-camera platform, but the available coverage does not include a current response from Cutler or Rice or establish whether the documentary presents their perspective.
What is Spin Wars about?
Spin Wars examines how boutique cycling studios grew into powerful lifestyle businesses, then follows the tensions that accompanied that expansion. Tribeca describes the film through themes of ambition, betrayal and “toxic sweat,” questioning the darker side of “mind, body, soul” branding rather than presenting indoor cycling as a simple fitness success story.
The U.S. feature documentary runs 89 minutes and is directed by Philip Byron. Credited participants include Ruth Zukerman, Marion Roaman, Katie Couric, Mary Beth Barone, Heather McMahan, Jill Kargman, Anna Roisman and Brandon Kyle Goodman. Tribeca’s 2026 lineup announcement identifies the festival screening as the film’s world premiere and credits Jillian Goldstein, Philip Byron, Stevenson Waite and James Thayer as producers.

What happened to Ruth Zukerman at SoulCycle?
Zukerman says Cutler and Rice told her during a meeting that she was no longer a partner. An AOL report published through Page Six attributes additional details to her account: she had brought a loyal following from a Reebok Club cycling class, was teaching 21 classes a week and had not signed partnership paperwork.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those details describe Zukerman’s version of the dispute, not an independently adjudicated finding. The founders’ earlier public statement, quoted in that report, was: “Ruth worked with us for a time. We decided to part ways. We wish her the best.” The available coverage does not disclose the terms of the agreement Zukerman says she signed after leaving.
Did Elizabeth Cutler and Julie Rice force her out?
The film puts Zukerman’s claim back before viewers, but the evidence currently available supports a more careful description: she says she was told she was no longer a partner, while Cutler and Rice’s quoted statement says the parties decided to separate. No current response from either founder appears in the searched coverage, and it is not established whether Spin Wars includes interviews or other material presenting their side.
Is this the first time Zukerman has told the story?
No. Zukerman discussed the departure in her 2018 memoir, Riding High: How I Kissed SoulCycle Goodbye, Co-Founded Flywheel, and Built the Life I Always Wanted. The reporting also points to a 2023 essay and a later podcast conversation. The documentary is therefore a new filmed venue and a wider cultural context, not her first public account.

At a Hamptons screening, Zukerman said, “I would regret keeping this story secret,” and described finally telling it as “very cathartic, obviously.” Those remarks explain her decision to speak; they do not independently resolve what happened in the partnership.
How should viewers weigh the documentary, memoir and news reports?
Each source answers a different question, so they should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
| Source | Format and purpose | Perspective present | What it can establish | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spin Wars | Edited feature documentary | Credited interview participants and the film’s editorial framing | How the filmmakers present the rise of SoulCycle, Flywheel and Peloton and Zukerman’s on-camera account | The available coverage does not establish whether Cutler or Rice appear or respond |
| Riding High | 2018 first-person memoir | Zukerman’s account of leaving SoulCycle and co-founding Flywheel | What Zukerman says she experienced and how she interpreted the departure | It is autobiographical rather than an independent determination of the dispute |
| News coverage | Reported context and quotations | Zukerman, the founders’ earlier statement and industry reporting | Chronology, attributed claims and later business developments | Reports rely on available sources and do not supply a complete record of the partnership agreement |

Why is the film arriving at a turning point for SoulCycle?
The documentary reaches audiences after substantial changes to the company and the boutique-fitness market. Athletech reported that SoulCycle is owned by Equinox, that Evelyn Webster announced her departure after nearly six years to lead Audiochuck, and that SoulCycle had not publicly named a new chief executive. The same report said the company’s website listed 52 studios in the United States and one in London.
Other figures come from separate reports and should be read as attributed estimates rather than one audited series. AOL reported that SoulCycle reached about 99 studios at its peak, that Cutler and Rice sold their remaining interests to Equinox in 2016 for a reported $90 million each, and that roughly 20 studios closed in 2022. Athletech, citing Front Office Sports, reported a $350 million loss in 2020 and nearly 25% location closures in 2022. Different outlets and methodologies account for the differences among these numbers.

What should viewers expect from the founder dispute?
Expect a documentary built around testimony, memory and the mythology of boutique fitness—not a court ruling. Zukerman’s account is central and has a documented history in her memoir and other appearances. The founders’ quoted statement supplies a conflictingly concise account, while the terms of any agreement and the full evidentiary record remain undisclosed in the available reporting.
That distinction matters because the film’s broader subject is larger than one business disagreement. SoulCycle, Flywheel and Peloton helped turn instructor-led cycling into identity, community and premium lifestyle consumption; Spin Wars uses the partnership rupture to examine the costs of that model as well as its appeal.

Is the December 22 release date worldwide?
No worldwide rollout has been established. Greenwich’s listing and the trade reports concern the announced release and North American rights, so viewers elsewhere should check their local digital listings.
Can the documentary determine the legal ownership of SoulCycle?
No. A film can show interviews and documents selected by its filmmakers, but it does not replace corporate records or a legal proceeding. Ownership history and the partnership disagreement should be treated as separate questions.
