Netflix has stopped supporting casting from a phone or tablet to most televisions and TV-streaming devices. The change affects the mobile app’s Cast control, not Netflix viewing on televisions generally. Netflix continues to support its own app on many TVs and streaming players, which you operate with a physical remote.
Netflix’s Help Center, current as of September 27, 2026, says: “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices.”
What changed
Previously, the Netflix app on a phone or tablet could start and control playback on a compatible television or streaming player. Netflix now limits that function to a small set of receiving devices. A missing Cast icon can therefore mean the receiver is no longer supported, rather than a fault with your phone.
This does not mean Netflix has ended television playback. If your TV or streamer has a supported Netflix app, open that app and browse with its remote.

Devices Netflix still lists for casting
Netflix’s current guidance identifies these categories as compatible, subject to the exact model and configuration:
| Receiving device | Qualification |
|---|---|
| Chromecast | Third generation or older, without a physical remote |
| Google Nest Hub | Smart Display |
| Vizio TVs | Select cast-enabled models only |
| Compal TVs | Select cast-enabled models only |
Brand membership alone is not enough: Netflix does not say that every Vizio or Compal television works. Check the live Netflix compatibility list for your exact model. Newer Chromecast devices with a remote are not covered by the older-Chromecast category in this casting guidance.

Does your Netflix plan allow casting?
Netflix’s missing-Cast-icon guidance identifies Standard and Premium plans as eligible for casting or mirroring. Netflix’s unsupported-device guidance says the ad-supported plan cannot cast from a mobile device to a television. Plan names and terms can change, so verify the rule in Netflix Help before relying on it.
Why the Cast button is missing
Your receiver is no longer supported
Most TVs and TV-streaming devices are now outside Netflix’s mobile-casting support. Network troubleshooting cannot make an unsupported receiver compatible.

Your plan is ad-supported

The devices are not on the same Wi-Fi network
For a receiver that is on Netflix’s compatibility list, the phone or tablet and the TV or streamer should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Also check that the Netflix app is current and follow Netflix’s no-devices-found troubleshooting steps.

How to keep watching Netflix on a television
Use the TV or streamer’s Netflix app
This is the main documented alternative. Netflix lists device families including Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku TV and Roku players, plus many television brands. Availability varies by exact model and region. Select Netflix with the physical remote, sign in, and play directly on the receiving device.
Add a streaming player when the TV lacks Netflix
A supported player can provide the Netflix app to a television that does not have a usable built-in app. Buying one will not restore phone casting; it changes how you access Netflix by giving you an app and remote on the TV.

Connect the phone or tablet by cable
Netflix names a wired connection as another option. Compatibility depends on the phone’s video-output capability, the required adapter, copy-protection support and the television’s available input. Confirm those requirements for both devices before purchasing a cable or adapter.
Cast to a remaining compatible device
If your receiver is an eligible older Chromecast, Google Nest Hub Smart Display, or select Vizio or Compal model, use an eligible Standard or Premium plan and place both devices on the same Wi-Fi network. If it still is not found, use Netflix’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
A quick decision path
- Identify the receiver. Find the exact TV, Chromecast or streaming-player model, not just its brand.
- Check Netflix’s current casting list. If the model is absent, assume phone casting is unavailable.
- Check the subscription. Netflix currently limits casting to Standard and Premium plans, excluding the ad-supported plan.
- Look for the Netflix app on the receiver. If it is available, use that app and its remote instead of the phone.
- Choose a fallback. Use a compatible streaming player for a TV without the app, or investigate a wired connection that matches your phone and TV.
Why did Netflix remove casting?
Netflix’s support pages explain which devices and plans remain supported, but they do not give a reason for withdrawing casting from most receivers. Reports about the missing button appeared in late 2025, yet those reports do not establish whether the cause was account sharing, security, engineering constraints or a business strategy. No named Netflix spokesperson’s explanation or authoritative estimate of affected users is established in the available guidance.
Quick Recap
What this means in practice
- Phone-to-TV casting is now an exception, not the normal Netflix path.
- The exact receiving device matters more than the television brand.
- An ad-supported subscription currently cannot cast from a mobile device.
- Watching Netflix on a TV remains widely available through the TV or streamer’s own app.
- A streaming stick can solve an app-availability problem, but not bring back phone casting.
