Netflix error S7702-1003 means Safari is using Private Browsing. Leave the Private window or tab group, open a normal Safari window, quit Safari completely, reopen it, and start Netflix again. Netflix documents this as the primary fix: Netflix error S7702-1003.
What S7702-1003 means
Netflix associates S7702-1003 with Safari Private Browsing and may display: “We’re having trouble playing Netflix. Please make sure your browser isn’t in Private mode and try again.” This is a browser-mode problem first—not a request to enable Widevine, change your subscription, or troubleshoot internet speed.
If Safari is set to reopen private windows automatically, closing one Netflix tab will not be enough. Change the startup setting, quit Safari, and reopen it.
Fix S7702-1003 on a Mac
- Open Safari and choose Safari > Settings. Older macOS versions may label this menu Safari > Preferences.
- Select General.
- For Safari opens with, choose A new window, not a private window.
- Close the Settings/Preferences window.
- Choose Safari > Quit Safari. Closing only the Netflix tab does not fully restart Safari.
- Open Safari again, visit Netflix, and try playback.

Fix S7702-1003 on an iPad
- In Safari, tap the New Page button.
- Tap Private, then tap Done to leave the Private tab group.
- Open a regular, non-private page and load Netflix again.
On some iPadOS layouts, tap Show Sidebar and select a regular tab group instead of using a button labelled New Page. The important check is that Netflix is open outside the Private tab group.
If Netflix still will not play
1. Verify the exact code
Make sure the message really says S7702-1003. Similar codes require different instructions:

2. Restart Safari and the device
Quit Safari, reopen it, and retry. If that fails, restart the Mac or iPad. Apple includes restarting among its general Safari troubleshooting steps: If Safari doesn’t work as expected on Mac.

3. Check system and browser support
Netflix currently lists these minimums:
- Mac: macOS 10.15.5 or later.
- Safari on Mac: Safari 14 or later; Safari 14 requires macOS 11 or later.
- iPad: iPadOS 14 or later with Safari 14 or later.
- Live Netflix events: Safari 15 or later.
- Mac Ultra HD: macOS 11 or later plus Netflix’s other Ultra HD requirements.
Safari updates normally arrive through macOS or iPadOS updates; Safari is not generally installed as a separate updater. See Netflix’s supported browsers and system requirements.
4. Update macOS or iPadOS
Install available operating-system updates, then retry Netflix. Netflix’s update guidance covers outdated browsers, operating systems, and unsupported devices: Netflix says “Update required”.
5. Remove Netflix website data only if necessary
This is a fallback for a persistent or changed error, not the primary S7702-1003 fix. On current Mac Safari, choose Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, search for netflix, remove its data, then reopen Netflix and sign in again. 6. Test extensions and privacy tools temporarily
Disable Safari extensions for a test, and temporarily test without a VPN, iCloud Private Relay, web filter, or security tool if one is active. Apple lists extensions, cookies, caches, Private Relay, VPNs, and security software as possible causes of Safari page problems. Restore protections after testing; do not leave security controls disabled.
7. Try another supported browser
On supported systems, Netflix also lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Opera. This is a practical fallback, but it does not correct Safari’s Private Browsing setting. Netflix’s stated maximum Mac resolutions differ by browser:

What not to do
- Do not install Silverlight. Netflix ended Silverlight support on September 13, 2023; see Browser isn’t supported.
- Do not enable Chrome Widevine or protected-content settings for this Safari-specific code.
- Do not erase all Safari data before trying the normal-window fix.
- Do not assume Netflix is down solely because this code appears. Check service status only if playback fails after the Safari fix or fails on multiple devices.
When to contact support
Contact Netflix if S7702-1003 remains after Private Browsing is disabled, Safari and the operating system meet Netflix’s requirements, and a clean restart does not help. Contact Apple or your organization’s device administrator if Private Browsing cannot be turned off, the setting is locked or repeatedly forced back on, or Safari itself fails to open pages. A school, employer, or family-management profile may control those settings.
Frequently asked questions
Will leaving Private Browsing delete my history?
No. It simply moves Netflix to a regular Safari window or tab group. Private tabs themselves do not become normal tabs; open a new regular tab or window.
Why does Safari keep opening private windows?
The Mac startup option may still be set to a private window. Change Safari opens with to A new window, then quit Safari completely before reopening it.

Do I need to clear Safari’s cache for S7702-1003?
Usually no. Netflix’s named fix is leaving Private Browsing and restarting Safari. Clear Netflix website data only in the fallback branch, especially if the code changes or another Safari playback problem appears.
Can I watch Netflix in Chrome or Firefox instead?
Yes, when your Mac or iPad meets Netflix’s supported browser and operating-system requirements. On Mac, Netflix lists Chrome and Firefox up to Full HD, while Safari is listed up to Ultra HD subject to the applicable requirements.
