Houdoku—often misspelled “Houdoki”—is a free, open-source desktop manga reader and library manager. It can index locally stored manga, discover chapters through source plugins, download chapters for offline reading, organize a collection with tags and categories, and connect reading progress to services such as AniList and MyAnimeList. It is best suited to desktop readers who want a personal library, not a hosted cloud service or a native mobile ecosystem.
The project’s releases page showed v2.16.0 as the latest visible release at the time of review; treat that as a dated project-page snapshot because later builds may change menus and features.
What Houdoku is—and what it is not
Houdoku is a standalone desktop application maintained as a public open-source project. The official site and repository describe a reader and library manager for manga and webtoons, with local-file importing, external-source plugins, downloads, reader customization and progress tracking. See the official site and the project repository.
The application, its plugins, the websites those plugins access, and your own manga files are separate things. A plugin may stop working when a website changes, and plugin availability does not prove that a website is licensed or endorsed. Houdoku itself does not provide permission to copy or redistribute copyrighted material.

Core features
Local library importing
Use the filesystem source to add an individual series or an entire collection. Houdoku can then present chapters in a library view rather than forcing you to browse image folders manually. The official getting-started guide documents the workflow at houdoku.org/guides/getting-started.html.
Import success depends on how consistently your collection is arranged. A practical pattern is:
Manga/
└── Series Name/
├── Chapter 001/
│ ├── 001.jpg
│ └── 002.jpg
└── Chapter 002/
├── 001.jpg
└── 002.jpg
This is a recommended pattern, not a guaranteed mandatory specification. Test one small series first, especially if you mix archives, volume folders, decimal chapters, extras or multiple translations. The current documentation supplied for this article does not establish every supported image extension, archive type or naming rule, so do not assume that an unusual collection will import perfectly.

Online-source plugins
Houdoku can discover series through plugins collected in the official plugin repository. In general, install or enable a source, search for a title, preview it, add it to the library, then read or download chapters. Recent release notes also describe preview reading, an “Add to library” action and consolidated download choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlugins depend on third-party websites. A site redesign, access restriction, regional block or plugin maintenance gap can make a source unavailable without the core app being broken. Use only sources and downloads you are entitled to access, and check the source’s own terms.
Reader layouts and controls
- Single page: the normal choice for page-by-page manga.
- Double page: useful on wide displays and for spreads, but sensitive to incorrect page ordering.
- Long strip: suited to vertically formatted webtoons.
- Display settings: image sizing, themes and other reader preferences.
- Controls: editable keybindings and fullscreen options.
Release notes for v2.16.0 describe a hideable reader sidebar and settings, including theme controls, that can be changed while reading. They also mention improved chapter-table and multi-chapter selection controls. Exact labels can differ in later builds.

Library organization
Tags, categories, filters and display options make Houdoku more capable than a basic image viewer. You can separate ongoing, completed or unread series and maintain different collections. Release notes document features including “Mark all Read,” persisted category filtering, per-category refresh controls and MangaUpdates tracking in v2.13.0. Availability should be checked in the installed version.
Progress tracking and Discord
The getting-started documentation lists AniList, MyAnimeList and Discord integrations; release notes also identify MangaUpdates support. Tracking records reading status or progress—it does not synchronize your manga files between computers. Alternate titles, different editions and chapter-numbering schemes can produce incorrect matches, so review the linked tracker entry and requested account permissions.
Installing Houdoku
- Download from the official Houdoku website or the project’s GitHub releases page.
- Use the build intended for your operating system. Installer formats and platform assets can change, so follow the current download page rather than an old tutorial.
- Launch Houdoku and open Settings to review library, reader, integration and backup options.
- Add a local filesystem source or install a supported plugin.
- Connect a tracker only if you want progress synchronization.
Avoid download mirrors that are not linked by the project. An open repository improves transparency, but it is not a promise that every downloaded binary is risk-free; keep your operating system and security tools current.

Adding local manga step by step
- Choose Add Series.
- Select the filesystem source.
- Pick one series or the root of a collection.
- Import, then open the series page.
- Check cover art, chapter order, special chapters and page readability before importing hundreds of folders.
If chapters are missing, first refresh the library and verify the configured folder. Check whether files were moved after import, whether names are ambiguous and whether your file type is supported. Reorganize a copy, not your only collection, until you know how the current build handles re-imports and duplicates.
Downloading chapters for offline reading
- Open a series page.
- Select Options → Download.
- Choose an individual chapter or a bulk option offered by your version, such as unread or all chapters.
- Monitor progress in the Downloads tab.
- Read the downloaded copy when the source is unavailable.
Change or inspect the destination under Settings → Library, as documented in the offline-download guide. Allow for image size and free disk space. A queued download can fail because a source removed a chapter, a plugin can no longer parse the site, the directory moved, permissions changed or a chapter folder has an invalid name.
Downloaded chapters are not automatically a complete backup. The repository says library data and settings are stored with localStorage; use the application’s backup controls in General settings if available, and separately back up the manga files themselves. A backup may not preserve every absolute path, plugin setting or external account link after migration.
Best Value
Is Houdoku safe and legal?
Software safety
Use the official website or GitHub releases, inspect release notes and keep the application updated. The public repository provides source visibility, but normal desktop-software precautions still apply.
Content and copyright
Houdoku is a reader and downloader, not a license. The legality of a chapter depends on your location, the source’s authorization and your rights to access or store it. Plugin support must not be interpreted as publisher approval.
Privacy
Core library information is stored locally according to the repository’s description. Connecting AniList, MyAnimeList, MangaUpdates or Discord introduces separate account authentication and data-sharing considerations; authorize only the services you intend to use.
Houdoku compared with alternatives
| Application | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Houdoku | Focused desktop manga library with local files, plugins and offline reading | Not a mobile-first or hosted multi-device server |
| Mihon | Android-first manga reading and extension workflow | Not a direct desktop replacement |
| Mangayomi | Cross-platform manga, novels and anime in one application | Broader scope can mean a less focused desktop experience |
| KamiYomu | Technically confident users wanting self-hosting, web access and modular crawlers | Server setup and maintenance |
| Omnibus | Self-hosted comic/manga libraries with automation and remote reading | Infrastructure overhead compared with a desktop app |
| Simple local reader | Well-organized files and minimal indexing | Loses Houdoku’s categories, tracking and source tools |
Troubleshooting common problems
Local chapters do not appear
- Try one clean series with consistent series and chapter folders.
- Refresh the library and verify the configured location.
- Check naming, file extensions and whether files were moved.
- Back up before large-scale renaming or re-importing.
Search returns no online results
- Try an alternate title or language spelling.
- Test another enabled source.
- Check the source website independently for outages or regional blocking.
- Update Houdoku and plugins when updates are available.
Downloads fail
- Confirm the directory exists, is writable and has enough space.
- Inspect the Downloads queue and retry failed pages.
- Check whether the source still exposes the chapter.
- Use a local copy if the plugin remains unavailable.
Tracker progress is wrong
Verify the linked series, edition and chapter numbering. Volume chapters, web chapters, alternate translations and one-way synchronization can all produce differences.
Verdict
Choose Houdoku when you want a focused desktop manga library with local importing, configurable reading modes, offline downloads and optional tracker integration. Choose Mihon for an Android-first workflow, Mangayomi for a broader cross-platform media app, or KamiYomu/Omnibus when a self-hosted server matters more than simplicity. Houdoku’s greatest strength is control over a personal desktop collection; its main compromises are dependence on third-party plugins and the absence of a built-in cloud or mobile ecosystem.
