Give Me The Ball! is worth watching if you want Billie Jean King in her own words, not a distant sports-history profile. Liz Garbus and Elizabeth Wolff’s 2026 ESPN Films 30 for 30 documentary uses an unusually candid present-day interview, intimate close-ups and rare archival material to connect King’s public victories with the private costs of leading the fight for equality. It runs about 102 minutes and becomes especially powerful when it reaches the 1973 Battle of the Sexes. Expect an affectionate, emotionally direct film that may well require tissues.
What is Give Me The Ball! about?
The documentary traces King’s career as a tennis champion, organizer and advocate for women’s sports. It covers her creation of professional opportunities for women, campaigns for equal pay and treatment, and her celebrated 1973 victory over Bobby Riggs. Rather than treating those milestones as isolated triumphs, the film shows what public leadership demanded from King personally.
King discusses marital strain, an abortion, the concealment of her sexual identity, an eating disorder and the misogyny surrounding her work. The result is both a sports history and a portrait of someone negotiating fame, fear and responsibility while trying to change institutions that resisted her.

Why is the Billie Jean King documentary so emotional?
King’s own presence is the film’s emotional anchor. Her conversational delivery can feel less like a formal interview than a video call with someone telling you what really happened. When a memory turns painful, the directors move from medium shots into close-up, making eye contact and hesitation part of the storytelling.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That visual strategy works with the archive rather than competing with it. Photographs, match footage and previously unseen material are edited alongside King’s reflections, while music gives major turning points a pulse. The film’s emotional force comes from the collision between the public image of an indomitable champion and the private compromises that image concealed.
What makes the Battle of the Sexes section stand out?
The first half can feel endearing but overextended as it establishes King’s background and the movement around her. The pace tightens at the 1973 Battle of the Sexes. The score, editing and archival images convey why the match mattered beyond tennis: it became a highly visible test of whether women’s athletic ability and professional status would be taken seriously.
King’s win is not presented as a neat ending. The documentary uses it as a hinge between public achievement and the personal strain that followed, preserving the complexity behind a familiar cultural symbol.

Does the film cover Billie Jean King’s personal struggles?
Yes. Personal material is central rather than an afterthought. King addresses the pressure of protecting her public role while hiding aspects of her identity, the effect of an eating disorder, an abortion and difficulties in her marriage. Those passages explain the human cost of maintaining a movement when the leader is expected to appear unbreakable.
Content note: the film includes references to eating disorders and discussions of personal sexuality. Viewers who prefer advance notice of those subjects should plan accordingly.
Is Give Me The Ball! worth watching?
For most documentary viewers, yes. The film offers direct access to an essential figure, substantial archival depth and a clear account of how women’s-sports equality was fought for in practice. Its main weakness is structural: the opening portion takes time to gather momentum. Once the Battle of the Sexes arrives, the film becomes more propulsive and its emotional design pays off.

What should you read after watching?
For more of King’s story in her own words, continue with her autobiography All In. The book provides room for context and reflection that a roughly 102-minute film cannot fully supply, making it a useful companion rather than a substitute for the documentary’s visual archive.

Will the documentary make me cry even if I do not follow tennis?
Probably. Its strongest scenes depend on King’s candor, eye contact and the contrast between public courage and private vulnerability, so the emotional response does not require detailed knowledge of tennis rankings or tournament history.
