“MKO” is a 108-minute, English-language documentary that makes a compelling but decidedly sympathetic case for Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as the central martyr of Nigeria’s interrupted democratic transition. Directed by Ose Oyamendan, it reconstructs Abiola’s business career, his victory in the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the military’s annulment of that result, his imprisonment and his death in custody in 1998. The film’s unusually broad access—archival footage, recordings and more than 50 interviewees—gives its investigation real evidentiary weight. Yet its admiration for Abiola also narrows the frame: the documentary raises, but does not fully resolve, questions about his alliances, alleged military connections and relationship with Ibrahim Babangida. The result is urgent, valuable history, though not a definitive or fully balanced portrait.

What is the “MKO” documentary about?

Oyamendan’s film follows Abiola from prominent businessman and publisher to the candidate who won Nigeria’s Social Democratic Party nomination and, according to the film’s account, one of the country’s freest elections. The military government annulled the June 12, 1993 result before a president could take office. Abiola then declared himself the rightful president, was arrested and jailed in 1994, and died in detention in 1998 after meeting U.S. diplomats.

The official premise treats the story as a political-crime investigation. Its questions are not limited to who killed Abiola, but also who abandoned Nigerian democracy. That broader framing connects one man’s detention to years of military rule, international pressure and an unfinished transition to civilian government.

How does the film reconstruct the June 12 crisis?

The documentary uses a chronological, evidence-led structure rather than dramatized re-enactments. Oyamendan’s journalistic background is apparent in the emphasis on records and testimony: archival television and newspaper material, voice recordings, diplomatic recollections and first-person accounts are assembled to move from the election campaign to annulment, detention and death.

More than 50 interviewees give the film an unusual range. Participants reported in the film include former military leaders Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, writer Wole Soyinka, politician Baba Gana Kingibe, Bola Tinubu, members of the Abiola family, U.S. officials Walter Carrington and Thomas Pickering, Canadian High Commissioner Gerald Ohlsen and journalists. Their differing positions allow the film to place competing memories beside one another instead of relying on a single narrator.

That access is the documentary’s strongest formal asset. Officials connected to the state, pro-democracy activists, diplomats and relatives all appear within the same historical chain. The method helps viewers understand why June 12 remains more than an annulled vote: it became a test of whether military power would yield to an electoral mandate.

Who killed MKO Abiola, and why does the film stop short of an answer?

The film establishes the circumstances surrounding Abiola’s death as disputed rather than proven. He died in custody in 1998 after meeting U.S. diplomats, and the documentary presents testimony about that encounter while asking who was responsible for his death. It does not supply an independently verified cause that settles the competing accounts.

That restraint is important. A documentary can show what witnesses said, when meetings occurred and how the political context shaped suspicion; it cannot turn unresolved testimony into a forensic finding. “MKO” is most persuasive when it distinguishes documented chronology from interpretation. Its title question remains open because the available accounts conflict.

Is “MKO” a balanced documentary?

It is broad in access but not even-handed in emphasis. Afrocritik critic Adedamola Jones Adedayo praised the archival material and witness-driven urgency but argued that the film presents an overwhelmingly positive image of Abiola. The review’s central criticism is that the editing treats him as the defining hero of Nigerian democracy while giving insufficient scrutiny to controversies around his political involvement.

In particular, the film does not fully examine allegations of military ties or Abiola’s relationship with Babangida. Those omissions matter because understanding the networks around the annulment requires more than celebrating the eventual victim of the crisis. A sympathetic portrait can be historically useful, but it should also test the subject’s compromises, strategic alliances and changing positions.

That limitation does not erase the documentary’s value. Abiola’s election victory, imprisonment and death are often discussed through partisan memory. By bringing former officials and opponents into the same film, Oyamendan supplies context that a purely commemorative work would lack. The problem is that the final arrangement still favors a heroic interpretation, so viewers should treat “MKO” as an argument about Abiola’s democratic significance, not as the last word on every disputed aspect of his career.

How accurate is the film’s account of Abiola’s death?

The film is strongest on sequence and testimony: election, annulment, self-declaration, arrest, detention, diplomatic contact and death. Its account reflects the established public timeline presented by the documentary’s participants and archival record. Accuracy becomes less certain when witnesses infer responsibility or motive, because the documentary cannot independently verify every allegation.

For that reason, the film should be watched as a documented investigation into a contested event. It records what participants claim and shows why suspicion persists; it does not prove a murderer or provide a conclusive medical explanation. The distinction between evidence and accusation is essential when evaluating the final chapters.

How does “MKO” compare with The Supreme Price?

Joanna Lippa’s 2014 documentary The Supreme Price is an earlier notable cinematic reflection on the Abiola family during military dictatorship. The two films differ in scope and emphasis. “MKO” is a broad political biography built from extensive access to officials, diplomats, journalists and relatives; The Supreme Price offers a more focused family and dictatorship-era perspective.

The useful comparison is not which film is universally superior, but how each handles sympathy and scrutiny. “MKO” supplies a large evidentiary canvas and a detailed public chronology, while its critics believe its admiration for Abiola softens examination of his alliances and compromises. Watching both can clarify how the same history changes when the camera centers a national political figure versus the family living through the consequences of military rule.

What are the documentary’s main strengths and weaknesses?

Strengths

  • Extensive access to more than 50 interviewees from opposing sides of the crisis.
  • Archival footage and recordings that anchor the chronology in contemporary evidence.
  • A clear explanation of how June 12 connects electoral legitimacy to Nigeria’s longer struggle against military rule.
  • Direct engagement with the unresolved circumstances of Abiola’s death rather than a simplified verdict.

Weaknesses

  • A consistently admiring portrait that can read as idealization.
  • Insufficient examination of alleged military connections and the Babangida relationship.
  • Conflicting testimony is presented, but the editing still guides viewers toward a heroic conclusion.
  • The film cannot independently settle the cause or responsibility for Abiola’s death.

What is the final verdict on “MKO”?

“MKO” is an important, access-rich account of the June 12 crisis and a forceful reminder that Nigeria’s democratic history was shaped by annulment, detention and unresolved loss. Its journalistic construction and range of witnesses make it substantially more than a tribute film. However, the documentary’s sympathy is also its boundary: by elevating Abiola as a democratic hero, it leaves too little room for the ambiguities that a fully adversarial investigation would pursue. Afrocritik’s 3/5 assessment captures that balance—substantial historical value and emotional urgency, reduced by an idealized perspective.
