Mean Girls (2024) is not a sequel to the 2004 movie and not a straightforward remake. It is a feature-film adaptation of the Mean Girls Broadway musical, which was itself adapted from the 2004 film. In other words: Queen Bees and Wannabes → Mean Girls (2004) → the Broadway musical → Mean Girls (2024).
The most important warning for new viewers is that this version is a musical comedy. It retells the familiar Cady Heron and Regina George story with new performers, updated social-media culture, revised character identities, and a reduced version of the stage score.

What exactly is Mean Girls (2024)?
The 2024 film is a screen adaptation of the Mean Girls stage musical. Tina Fey wrote the musical’s book, Jeff Richmond composed the music and Nell Benjamin wrote the lyrics. The stage production was based on Fey’s 2004 screenplay, which drew inspiration from Rosalind Wiseman’s nonfiction book Queen Bees and Wannabes.

Is it a sequel to the 2004 movie?
No. Mean Girls (2024) is a self-contained retelling. Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron, Reneé Rapp plays Regina George, and the central conflict remains the familiar one: Cady arrives at North Shore High School, is recruited by Regina’s Plastics, falls for Regina’s former boyfriend Aaron Samuels, and becomes increasingly absorbed by the social system she intended to undermine.
The film does contain callbacks and appearances by performers associated with the 2004 movie. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, and other returning cast members appear in cameos. Those connections are nostalgic references, not evidence that the story takes place after the original film.
What is the story? A spoiler-free synopsis
Cady Heron has been homeschooled in Africa and has never experienced an American high school. At North Shore, she is befriended by Janis ‘Imi’ike and Damian Hubbard, who ask her to infiltrate the Plastics, the school’s most powerful clique. The group is led by Regina George, whose confidence, cruelty and social influence make her the unofficial ruler of the school.
Cady joins Regina, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Shetty while pretending to gather information for Janis and Damian. But popularity proves addictive. As Cady adopts the Plastics’ habits, competes with Regina and develops feelings for Aaron, her plan to bring Regina down begins to change her as well.
The familiar conflict unfolds through rumors, romance, body-image pressure, the Burn Book, public humiliation and social-media spectacle. The main plot is recognizable from the 2004 movie, but songs now express the characters’ desires, fears and rivalries. Social platforms also accelerate the story’s rumor economy: the Burn Book’s private cruelty has become part of a culture where a short video or post can spread across the school almost instantly.

The Paramount+ cast listing confirms the principal credits. Rapp is especially notable because she previously played Regina in the Broadway production before reprising the role on film; her IBDB record documents that stage credit.
Returning performers and cameos
The film’s cameo appearances connect it to the 2004 version without making it a sequel. Promotional coverage highlighted appearances associated with Lindsay Lohan, Daniel Franzese and Rajiv Surendra, as well as Megan Thee Stallion. The cameo guide from TIME discusses those appearances and notes that not every member of the original principal cast was able to participate. It is therefore inaccurate to say that the entire 2004 cast returns.
Is Mean Girls (2024) really a musical?
Yes. Songs are a central part of the film, not an occasional novelty. Cady’s romantic confusion, Regina’s power, Janis’s anger and the characters’ competing ideas about popularity are expressed through musical numbers adapted from the Broadway show.

Some viewers were caught off guard because the main advertising campaign did not clearly foreground the musical format. The official Paramount trailer leaned heavily on the familiar comedy and used Olivia Rodrigo’s get him back! rather than introducing audiences through the film’s original musical numbers. Forbes reported on the resulting audience confusion and the wider marketing reluctance to advertise some movie musicals as musicals.
Musically and visually, the film sits between a conventional teen comedy, a pop music video and a stage adaptation. Some sequences use fantasy imagery or heightened choreography; others imitate phone footage, social-media posts and TikTok-style videos. That mixture gives the film speed and color, although viewers who prefer naturalistic storytelling may find some numbers more like polished music videos than organically cinematic scenes.

The official movie soundtrack contains 13 listed tracks. It is important to distinguish the album from the complete stage score: the film uses material from the Broadway musical but cuts, rearranges and shortens several numbers.

The official soundtrack announcement from Universal Music Canada supplies the album’s release date and track list. “Not My Fault” should be treated differently from the main story songs: it is a promotional soundtrack single featuring Megan Thee Stallion, not automatically a conventional Broadway-style production number simply because it appears on the album.

According to TIME’s comparison, runtime, budget and the practical need to keep the film from becoming too long influenced the cuts. That means there are three distinct experiences: the 2004 movie, the Broadway musical and the 2024 film musical. The movie soundtrack is also not a complete record of every musical fragment heard on screen.
How does the 2024 film differ from the 2004 movie?
The broad story is highly familiar, but the presentation, character details and ending have changed. The most useful distinction is between plot fidelity and adaptation fidelity: the film remains close to the original movie’s plot, but it is not a complete reproduction of either the 2004 film or the stage musical.

Janis ‘Imi’ike and Karen Shetty
The new film gives two characters more specific identities. Janis is renamed Janis ‘Imi’ike, reflecting Auliʻi Cravalho’s Hawaiian heritage, and her sexuality is openly part of the character rather than being treated as the punchline of a homophobic rumor. Cravalho discussed that characterization in interviews with Teen Vogue and TheWrap.
Karen becomes Karen Shetty, giving Avantika’s character an Indian heritage and a more defined identity. Cast discussions covered by POPSUGAR framed these changes as part of making the roles more specific to the performers playing them.
These updates improve the film’s representation in clear ways, but they do not make the entire story radically new. Much of the plot, hierarchy and social satire remains intact. As BFI’s review argues, the film modernizes some aspects while also softening much of the original’s sharper edge.

Spoilers: how does the ending change?
Cady’s plan to undermine Regina eventually exposes how thoroughly Cady has absorbed the behavior of the Plastics. She is not merely an outside investigator who remains morally untouched; she becomes part of the cruelty she claimed to oppose. Janis and Damian confront her about the revenge plan and its consequences, forcing Cady to acknowledge that she has damaged her friendships and reproduced the same social violence.
The Burn Book fallout leads to a school-wide reckoning. The book’s accusations and the resulting panic turn private gossip into public conflict, exposing how many students participate in the hierarchy even while claiming to hate it. Cady must accept responsibility rather than treating Regina as the sole source of the school’s problems.

Her trajectory after the crisis is less isolated than the 2004 film’s more pointed individual consequences suggest. The film does not give Regina, Karen and Gretchen the same detailed set of separate post-conflict outcomes. Instead, the Spring Fling resolution emphasizes coexistence and reconciliation across the school.
That collective ending fits the musical’s more rehabilitative moral framework. It argues that the school’s social system is sustained by many people, so repair also has to be collective. The trade-off is that the resolution is less sharply satirical: the 2004 ending leaves more room for the joke that social hierarchies mutate rather than disappear, while the 2024 conclusion puts greater weight on everyone finding a place within the community. What is the film saying about popularity and social media?
At its best, the film preserves the original story’s central insight: popularity is not simply a personality trait but a performance supported by a group. Regina’s power comes from controlling access, language, fashion and information. Cady’s transformation shows how easily a person can confuse opposition to a hierarchy with a desire to occupy its highest position.
The update from phones and hallway gossip to viral posts is more than a change in props. Social media accelerates the Burn Book’s logic. A private insult can become a public identity; humiliation can be recorded, replayed and detached from its original context; and the audience that watches the cruelty can also help distribute it. However, the modernization is partly superficial because the underlying plot remains so close to the 2004 version. The film updates the speed of social punishment more thoroughly than it redesigns the institution that produces it.

The movie also examines the difference between accountability and public humiliation. Cady, Regina and the other students do need to face consequences, but the story repeatedly shows that a crowd’s demand for punishment can become another form of entertainment. Its eventual emphasis on reconciliation is hopeful, though the film does not completely solve the structural status system at North Shore.
Janis’s revised storyline adds another layer. The 2024 version moves away from using a queer-coded accusation as a joke and gives Janis a more explicit identity and a claim to self-definition. That is a meaningful change in representation, even though the film continues to use the familiar framework of friendship, rivalry and social performance.
The themes also make the film useful for discussion with older teenagers. Girls Inc. partnered with Paramount on a discussion guide covering bullying, allyship, self-esteem, relationship-building and social-emotional learning. That guide can support a parent or classroom conversation, but its existence should not be mistaken for proof that the film offers a complete anti-bullying program. It is better used as a starting point for asking who has power, who is rewarded for cruelty, and whether reconciliation changes the system or only the participants’ behavior.

How was the film made?
Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. made their feature-film debut as directors. Tina Fey asked them to pitch a film adaptation of the Broadway musical in 2020. They filmed for a little over a month in a New Jersey high school and rehearsed the musical sequences using phones before shooting them with the full camera setup. The filmmakers’ account is available through the University of Texas Moody College of Communication.
The reported production cost was approximately $36 million. That is a reported budget estimate, not a complete statement of the film’s total costs or profitability.
The visual design combines ordinary narrative scenes with music-video, social-media, fantasy and stage-derived imagery. Phone footage and TikTok-style presentation help show how the students perform versions of themselves for an audience. The production also uses multiple aspect ratios, stylized musical staging and visual effects. BFI and Post Magazine both discuss the film’s visual and post-production strategy.

Aggregator scores are a dated snapshot rather than a permanent verdict. On pages checked August 10, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 69% from 255 critics and a 62% verified audience score from more than 1,000 ratings. Metacritic listed a 66 out of 100 from 39 critics, categorized as Generally Favorable. Those numbers may change as sites update their databases.

Mean Girls was released theatrically in the United States on January 12, 2024. The film was initially associated with a Paramount+ release, but Paramount ultimately placed it in cinemas. Contemporary reporting from the Associated Press attributed the shift in part to positive test scores and the commercial opportunity offered by a recognizable title. That explanation should be understood as reported reasoning, not as a publicly documented account of every internal business decision.
The film opened to $28,635,307 from 3,791 theaters, according to both Box Office Mojo and The Numbers. Final totals differ slightly between trackers:

It is more accurate to describe the worldwide result as approximately $104.6 million to $105.0 million, depending on the database. Neither that gross nor the reported approximately $36 million production budget proves that the film was profitable. Theatrical revenue is divided between exhibitors and distributors, and a simple budget-versus-gross comparison does not account for marketing, financing, residuals or later home-entertainment revenue.
Where can you watch Mean Girls (2024)?
For the United States, Paramount+ listed the film for subscription streaming in the availability check dated August 10, 2026. The same check found through JustWatch’s U.S. listing that viewers could rent or buy it through Apple TV, Amazon Video and Fandango at Home.

Parents’ guide: how suitable is it for younger viewers?
The film is rated PG-13 in the United States for sexual material, strong language and teen drinking. It is not a horror film and does not depend on graphic physical violence, but emotional cruelty is its central subject. The rating should therefore be considered alongside the child’s sensitivity to bullying and humiliation, not just the amount of physical action.
- Bullying and exclusion: students are mocked, isolated, manipulated and publicly humiliated.
- Sexual material: sexual references, sex-education material and jokes about bodies and relationships.
- Alcohol and drugs: teen drinking and references to drugs or intoxication.
