For a first-time MCU watch, follow release order: it preserves the reveals and post-credit setups as audiences encountered them. For a rewatch, use the chronological guide below to follow the in-universe story. Marvel’s Disney+ Timeline Order is a useful reference, but not every season has a publicly established episode-by-episode date, and multiverse stories do not all fit on one calendar.
How to choose an MCU watch order
| Order | Best for | What it preserves or clarifies |
|---|---|---|
| Release order | A first viewing | The intended audience discoveries, post-credit setups, and the way the saga unfolded across films and series. |
| Chronological order | A rewatch | The in-universe sequence, including the wartime beginning, the Blip, and later character arcs. |
The chronology below is a practical season-level guide, not a claim that every story has one settled date. Keep a title’s post-credit scenes with that title unless the platform explicitly separates them: for example, Captain Marvel’s main story is set in the 1990s, but its post-credit scene belongs after Avengers: Infinity War; Ant-Man and the Wasp’s post-credit scenes belong in the Infinity War period.
MCU timeline in chronological order
This list follows the Marvel Studios/Disney+ core as a season-level viewing sequence, with legacy live-action shows included as adjacent continuity. Optional branches that do not share one straightforward Earth-616 chronology are separated below.

Marvel’s current Disney+ ordering places Loki, Season 2 after The Marvels. That platform placement is useful for navigating the catalog, but Loki follows a multiverse branch rather than a simple continuation of the main timeline.

Animated and multiverse branches
These are relevant Marvel stories, but they should not be silently folded into one Earth-616 calendar. Their anthology or alternate-universe premises make a single chronological sequence misleading.
- Eyes of Wakanda, Season 1 — an animated historical anthology with stories spanning different periods; treat it as a branch rather than one dated point in the core sequence.
- The Fantastic Four: First Steps — set in a retro-futurist 1960s alternate world. Its setting is not the same thing as a confirmed 1960s placement in the main MCU timeline.
- Loki, Season 1 — follows the time-heist divergence in Endgame and opens onto a multiverse branch.
- What If…?, Seasons 1 and 2 — animated alternate-universe stories.
- Deadpool & Wolverine — a multiverse crossover; viewers who want its earlier character context can watch the preceding Fox-era X-Men and Deadpool films first.
- Marvel Zombies, Season 1 — alternate-universe animation.
- Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Season 1 — an animated alternate-universe story.
Rotten Tomatoes’ complete chronological and release-order guide was updated September 21, 2026, and includes an expanded current list. For a platform-specific sequence, Marvel also directs fans to the Timeline Order on Disney+. The official book The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline was announced by Marvel on October 23, 2023, as a Marvel Studios collaboration.

Release timing does not automatically establish in-universe chronology. As of September 28, 2026, Marvel’s catalog lists several newer or scheduled entries whose exact place in the story is best left to the released episodes or film rather than guessed from a date.
- Spider-Man: Brand New Day — listed as a 2026 release; its precise position relative to later Phase Six crossovers depends on the released story.
- Daredevil: Born Again, Season 2 — listed by Marvel for 2026; exact story placement depends on the season.
- Wonder Man, Season 1 — listed by Marvel for 2026; chronology is not established here.
- The Punisher: One Last Kill — Marvel lists May 12, 2026; its exact position depends on the released story.
- VisionQuest — Marvel lists October 14, 2026, a date still upcoming on September 28, 2026; its exact chronology is pending release.
Do not treat these titles as a settled continuation of one linear calendar until their stories establish where they belong. Marvel’s catalog dates tell you when titles are listed to arrive, not necessarily the year in which their plots occur.

Do you need to watch the Defenders shows?
Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher are useful as a connected street-level viewing block, and the Disney+ legacy catalog places them alongside MCU viewing. They are not necessary to understand the central Avengers film arc. Their exact episode-by-episode placement is not set out in one authoritative public chronology, so the list groups them by season rather than pretending to date individual episodes precisely. Inhumans, Season 1 is another legacy/optional title; its continuity is less central to the Marvel Studios core sequence.

There is no single required checklist established here. If you want the broadest continuity context, prioritize the main release-order film sequence, then add the character-focused MCU films and series relevant to the story you want to follow. Release order is the safer first pass for preserving setups; the Disney+ timeline is a navigation aid, not a guarantee that every multiverse or legacy title is required.
