The account says doctors told Matt’s father that the injury was around two centimetres from his temple. The report further states that doctors warned of potentially catastrophic consequences, including a coma or permanent dependence on tube support. Matt reportedly required surgery and received 16 stitches.
These are serious claims, but they should be attributed to Matt’s recollection as reported by the secondary source. No hospital report, physician statement or contemporaneous news coverage has been made available to verify the medical details.

That image has led some coverage to describe the incident as a near-death experience.
