Marvel Studios’ Echo is already available to watch. The five-episode live-action series premiered in the United States on January 9, 2024, at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET. January 10, 2024, appeared in many international listings and Disney press materials because of time-zone differences. All five episodes were released at once.

Echo is a grounded Marvel crime drama about Maya Lopez returning to her Oklahoma hometown after the events of Hawkeye. Her conflict with Wilson Fisk—also known as Kingpin—is only part of the story: family, trauma, community and Maya’s Choctaw heritage are equally important.

Echo release date and streaming details
Echo premiered in the U.S. on January 9, 2024, at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET. Disney’s international-facing announcement used January 10, 2024, a date that also appeared in many territories. These are not conflicting release dates: the U.S. launch happened late on January 9 in the Pacific and Eastern time zones, while it was already January 10 in other markets. Marvel executive Brad Winderbaum discussed the U.S. launch timing in an interview with Disney.
Unlike most Marvel series, which release one episode per week, all five episodes of Echo premiered simultaneously. The complete first season is therefore available to binge rather than awaiting a future episode or release date.
U.S. viewers: The current Disney+ listing confirms one season, five episodes and a TV-MA rating. Echo also launched on Hulu in the United States, but the original announcement stated that Hulu access would run through April 9, 2024. Marvel’s title page may still display Hulu alongside Disney+, so standalone Hulu access should be checked in the viewer’s own app and region rather than assumed.

Outside the U.S.: Echo is generally distributed through Disney+, often within the service’s Star or general-entertainment area. Catalogs differ by territory, so the local Disney+ search is the most reliable way to confirm availability.

The official trailer presents the series as a violent, street-level crime story focused on Maya, Kingpin and Maya’s return home. It also shows footage of Daredevil, so the trailer contains a mild cameo spoiler for viewers who want to begin the series completely cold.

What is Echo about?
Echo follows Maya Lopez after the events of Hawkeye. Her violent past in New York catches up with her when she returns to her Oklahoma hometown. Wilson Fisk’s criminal organization is still pursuing her, while Maya must confront her family history, her Choctaw roots and the trauma that shaped her relationship with Fisk.
Fisk is not simply another villain for Maya to defeat. He helped shape her into a fighter and sees her as both a threat and someone connected to him. That personal history gives the crime plot its emotional center.
The series moves much of its action away from New York and into Maya’s Oklahoma community. As a result, the story is as concerned with ancestry, family, belonging and community responsibility as it is with gang conflict and hand-to-hand combat. Marvel’s official project profile and its featurette on Maya’s Choctaw identity describe those elements without requiring spoilers.
Although Echo is more grounded than an Avengers-scale story, it is not exclusively realistic. Mystical and ancestral elements become part of Maya’s journey, alongside the hard-edged crime drama.

Disney’s production coverage and the official project profile identify the principal ensemble. Charlie Cox should be treated separately from that main cast list: he appears as Daredevil, but Echo is Maya’s series, not a disguised new season of Daredevil.
Vincent D’Onofrio returns as Wilson Fisk after playing the character in Marvel’s Daredevil and later in Hawkeye. Charlie Cox likewise returns as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Marvel’s background material confirms Cox’s appearance in Echo, while the show’s principal cast materials focus on Alaqua Cox and the Oklahoma ensemble.
Who directed and produced Echo?
Sydney Freeland directed episodes 1, 2, 4 and 5. Catriona McKenzie directed episode 3. Filming began at Trilith Studios in Fayetteville, Georgia, in April 2022, according to Disney’s production coverage.
The executive producers were Kevin Feige, Stephen Broussard, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Victoria Alonso, Richie Palmer, Jason Gavin, Marion Dayre and Sydney Freeland. Jennifer L. Booth and Amy Rardin served as co-executive producers.

How many episodes does Echo have?
Echo has one season of five episodes. The complete season was released at the same time on launch day.

The Disney+ episode listing confirms the five-episode structure and titles. Its short format makes the series an easy weekend binge, although viewers who prefer long seasons may find that the compressed structure leaves less room for slow character development.
Is Echo part of the MCU?
Yes. Echo is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Marvel designed it to work as a relatively self-contained story.

Maya was introduced in Hawkeye, and Echo begins after the confrontation between Maya and Fisk at the end of that series. The show also connects to the MCU’s street-level corner through Kingpin and Daredevil. It does not involve an Avengers-level threat or require viewers to complete the entire MCU before pressing play.

What is Marvel Spotlight?
Marvel Spotlight is a branding and storytelling label, not a separate universe. Echo was the first series released under the banner. Marvel described the label as a way to identify more grounded, character-driven stories that can be watched without extensive continuity homework while remaining part of the larger MCU.
In practical terms, the Marvel Spotlight label signals that:
- the central conflict is personal and street-level;
- the story is more self-contained than a major crossover event;
- new viewers do not need to know every MCU reference;
- the series can still use established characters and continuity; and
- characters connected to the label are not locked out of future MCU appearances.
That makes “standalone” a useful description only if it is qualified. Echo is self-contained, but it is not disconnected from the MCU.
Do you need to watch Hawkeye or Daredevil first?
Minimum preparation: none. Marvel specifically positioned Echo so that viewers could start with it without completing a long MCU watch list.
Recommended preparation: Hawkeye. Watching Hawkeye first explains Maya’s introduction, her relationship with Fisk and the events that lead directly into the new series. It is useful context, not mandatory homework.
Optional deeper context: Daredevil. The original Netflix/Marvel series provides more history for Fisk and Matt Murdock, but it is not required to understand Maya’s main story. Viewers should not approach Echo expecting a continuation centered primarily on Daredevil.
A spoiler-light viewing order is therefore:
- Hawkeye
- Echo
- Daredevil, if you want additional background on Fisk and Matt Murdock
Why Echo matters for representation
The representation in Echo is more substantial than a single “first” claim. In the live-action series, Maya Lopez is Choctaw, and the production worked with the Choctaw Nation on cultural representation, including history, symbols, language and traditions. The Choctaw Nation’s partnership site documents that collaboration.

Alaqua Cox is Native American, Deaf and an amputee. Her casting gives the series a lead performer whose lived experience is relevant to Maya’s Deaf and disabled identity. American Sign Language is incorporated into the show’s visual storytelling rather than treated as an incidental detail. Marvel also prepared a Choctaw-language dub, with the first dubbed episode available at launch according to the company’s featurette coverage.
It is important to distinguish the live-action version from the comics character. In the MCU series, Maya’s identity and family story are rooted in the Choctaw Nation and Oklahoma. In Marvel’s comics, Maya is described as a Deaf, Cheyenne-Latin American character. Those are different continuities and should not be presented as interchangeable biographical details.

Maya Lopez first appeared in Daredevil #9 in 1999, created by David Mack and Joe Quesada. Marvel describes her comic-book ability as photographic reflexes: she can reproduce physical actions she observes. The comics version was initially manipulated by Kingpin and became closely connected to Daredevil.
Maya was also the first Marvel character to use the Ronin identity in the comics, before Clint Barton and other characters adopted it. Marvel’s history of Echo and its character overview provide the comic-book background.
That history is useful context, but the show changes important parts of Maya’s background and cultural identity. Comic-book photographic reflexes should not automatically be treated as an exact description of the live-action character’s abilities.

Echo is rated TV-MA. It was Marvel Studios’ first series positioned with that mature television rating, reflecting Maya’s background as a fighter trained by Fisk and the criminal world around her. Calling it “Marvel’s first R-rated series” would be inaccurate: TV-MA is a television classification, while R is a film rating.
The series contains intense violence and a harder-edged crime-drama tone than many Disney+ Marvel productions. It is a better fit for adults who want close-quarters action, criminal underworld conflict and family trauma than for viewers looking for light superhero adventure.

The Disney+ listing also carries a warning that some flashing-light sequences or patterns may affect photosensitive viewers.
Is Echo worth watching?
Echo is a good choice if you want a short, completed Marvel binge with a street-level focus, a serious tone and a character-driven conflict. It offers an MCU story led by a Deaf, Native American protagonist, gives Kingpin more room as a personal threat and uses Oklahoma family and community life as more than background decoration.

- large-scale Avengers or multiverse stakes;
- a long season with extensive subplots and slow development;
- a traditional weekly-release mystery;
- a show focused primarily on Matt Murdock and Daredevil; or
- a consistently realistic crime drama with no mystical or ancestral elements.
Reception has been mixed rather than universally enthusiastic. As a dated snapshot, Rotten Tomatoes lists Echo at 71% from critics and 57% from audiences; those scores can change as the site adds or reclassifies reviews. The numbers are best used as context, not as a substitute for knowing whether the tone and subject matter fit your preferences.
Is Echo season 2 happening?
There is no officially announced Echo season 2 or second-season release date as of August 10, 2026. Marvel’s current television catalog does not list a follow-up season. That does not establish that the series has been canceled; it means viewers should not treat rumored dates, fan videos or speculative reports as confirmed news.
The first season was built as a complete five-episode story, so the available season does not end with a pending release that viewers need to wait for. Any future continuation would require an official announcement from Marvel or Disney.

The bottom line: Echo is a completed five-episode MCU series available on Disney+. Start with Hawkeye if you want the clearest setup, but extensive Marvel homework is unnecessary. Expect a TV-MA, street-level crime story centered on Maya Lopez, her Choctaw family and community, Wilson Fisk and the consequences of her past—not a full Daredevil replacement or an Avengers-scale event.
