The Mad Max films are easiest to place as a loose progression rather than a precisely dated continuity. Modern society is still functioning in Mad Max; fuel wars have reduced the world to fortified settlements in The Road Warrior; Beyond Thunderdome depicts a post-nuclear wasteland; and Furiosa leads directly into Fury Road.

The best-fit chronological order is:

  1. Mad Max (1979)
  2. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
  3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
  4. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
  5. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

That order explains the broad development of the wasteland, but it does not produce a reliable calendar-year timeline. George Miller has repeatedly described the movies as largely standalone, mythic episodes rather than chapters in a rigorously dated history.

The Mad Max timeline at a glance

Film Best-supported placement What can be stated confidently
Mad Max First A near-future society is breaking down, but police, courts, hospitals, homes and cities still function.
Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior After Mad Max Civilization has collapsed and fuel has become the central source of power.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome About 15 years after The Road Warrior The nuclear catastrophe has occurred and new wasteland societies are emerging.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Before Fury Road Furiosa’s story runs from childhood to her life as an Imperator.
Mad Max: Fury Road After Furiosa Furiosa’s escape from Immortan Joe takes place over roughly three days.

The release years are 1979, 1981, 1985, 2015 and 2024. Those dates identify when the films were made, not necessarily when their stories occur.

1. Mad Max: the pre-wasteland collapse

The first film is the earliest event in the most coherent version of the story. Its world remains recognizably modern. Police patrol highways, courts still operate, hospitals treat victims, and Max has a home, a wife and a child. Restaurants, cars and urban infrastructure are still part of everyday life.

However, this is not a stable society. Fuel shortages, escalating violence and the loss of public authority are turning Australia into a dangerous place. The Main Force Patrol can still enforce the law, but it is increasingly outmatched by violent gangs and an exhausted population.

The opening text places the film “a few years from now.” It does not give a year. The safest description is therefore a near-future version of late-1970s Australia, not 1979 itself and not a confirmed date such as 2021 or 2025.

Timeline position: first, with no exact in-universe year.

2. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior: civilization has broken down

The Road Warrior follows Mad Max in the broadest and most defensible chronology. The urban institutions seen in the first film have disappeared or become irrelevant. Max is now a solitary drifter, and communities survive inside fortified compounds protected by armed guards.

Fuel is no longer merely expensive or scarce; it is the resource around which the remaining economy and political order are organized. The conflict at the refinery is effectively a battle over whether one settlement can escape the wasteland with its fuel reserves.

The film’s opening narration explains that resource wars and the collapse of the fuel economy destroyed the old world, but it does not identify a calendar year. It is also safer not to describe the film as definitively post-nuclear. Nuclear catastrophe is clearly part of the history by Beyond Thunderdome, while The Road Warrior concentrates on fuel shortages, social collapse and armed competition.

Timeline position: after Mad Max, with an unknown interval between the two films.

3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: approximately 15 years later

The clearest major time jump in the original trilogy occurs between The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome. Contemporary coverage described the third film as taking place approximately 15 years later.

That gap accounts for the transformed setting. The old industrial order has vanished, the nuclear catastrophe has occurred, and new political systems are forming from the ruins. Bartertown is a rough but functioning city-state, while the Lost Tribe is made up largely of children who grew up after the old world ended.

Beyond Thunderdome therefore represents a transition between the immediate survivalism of The Road Warrior and a more mythologized post-apocalyptic society. Bartertown has trade, law and hierarchy, but all three are built around improvised technologies and scarce resources.

The film includes a date connected to Captain Walker’s disappearance, but that detail cannot be used to build a precise calendar for the entire franchise. Later films do not consistently match a literal reading of the original trilogy’s dates.

Timeline position: roughly 15 years after The Road Warrior, after the nuclear catastrophe.

4. Furiosa: the origin story before Fury Road

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is unambiguously a prequel to Fury Road. It begins when Furiosa is a child in the Green Place and follows her abduction, enslavement, training and rise through Immortan Joe’s war machine. By the end, she is the Imperator seen in the 2015 film.

The film’s conclusion leads directly into the situation established at the beginning of Fury Road: Furiosa is driving the War Rig and attempting to take Immortan Joe’s five wives away from the Citadel.

How many years does Furiosa cover?

The available figures are not identical because they measure different parts of the story:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • George Miller has described Furiosa’s age as moving from approximately 10 to 28.
  • He has also discussed roughly 15 or 16 years before Furiosa is encountered in Fury Road.
  • Other interview descriptions refer to the completed story as covering 18 years.
  • Furiosa says her mother died 15 years earlier, which is an internal reference to one part of the story.

The most accurate editorial wording is that Furiosa spans roughly 15–18 years, from Furiosa’s childhood to the events immediately preceding Fury Road. There is no need to force those slightly different figures into one exact number.

What does “45 years after the collapse” mean?

Marketing for Furiosa described the film as taking place 45 years after “the collapse.” This is an in-universe measurement of time since the civilization-ending catastrophe. It is not a year such as 2045 or 2060, because the films never establish the calendar year in which the collapse occurred.

Timeline position: directly before Fury Road, covering Furiosa’s transformation from child to Imperator.

5. Mad Max: Fury Road: the latest released event

Fury Road occurs after Furiosa. Furiosa is already an Imperator under Immortan Joe, and the film follows her attempt to escape the Citadel with Joe’s five wives. The final section of Furiosa supplies the background for that escape.

Miller has spoken of Fury Road as taking place roughly 45–50 years after the apocalypse in his broad conception of the setting. He has also said that, if the movie had to be placed relative to the earlier films, it would probably come after Beyond Thunderdome. Neither statement creates a fixed calendar date.

The chase itself is highly compressed, unfolding over approximately three days. That makes it structurally very different from Furiosa, which covers many years through distinct periods of Furiosa’s life.

Timeline position: after Furiosa and probably after Beyond Thunderdome in Miller’s loose ordering, but without a definitive year.

Why the films do not fit a perfect calendar timeline

George Miller did not build a conventional continuous chronology

Miller has described the films as standalone stories or fragments of a larger wasteland mythology. Their relationship is closer to Westerns, samurai tales or folklore than to a franchise where every event must fit a numbered timeline.

That approach explains why Max’s age, the level of technology, the state of the world and the identities of the surrounding communities do not always line up if every scene is treated as literal historical evidence.

Fury Road is a “revisit”

Miller has called Fury Road a “revisit” rather than defining it as a conventional sequel or a total reboot. The film preserves the central mythology—Max as a wandering survivor in a ruined world—but does not attempt to obey every detail of the earlier movies.

The most useful description is a soft reboot or mythic continuation. It is not wholly disconnected from the original trilogy, but it is not a hard-continuity sequel either.

The later films use different visual assumptions

Furiosa and Fury Road were produced decades after the original trilogy. Their technology, vehicles, landscapes and depiction of the collapse reflect a later creative interpretation. Trying to map them directly onto the early 2000s, or onto one exact future year, creates more contradictions than it solves.

The mythology is more consistent than the calendar:

  • Max remains a wandering survivor.
  • The world passes through resource crises, wars and institutional collapse.
  • Communities fragment into isolated centers of power.
  • Stories about Max and the wasteland become legend.
  • The details can change depending on who is telling the story.

Chronological viewing order

For the story’s broad chronology, watch:

  1. Mad Max
  2. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
  3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
  4. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
  5. Mad Max: Fury Road

This order places the original trilogy’s progression first, then moves from Furiosa’s childhood to the events of Fury Road.

Release order

For a first viewing, release order remains the better choice:

  1. Mad Max (1979)
  2. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)
  3. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)
  4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
  5. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Release order preserves the series’ evolution from a near-future police thriller to a full wasteland adventure and then to Miller’s later mythic reinterpretation. Watching Furiosa after Fury Road also makes its prequel structure and visual callbacks easier to appreciate.

FAQ

What is the chronological order of the Mad Max movies?

The best-fit order is Mad Max, Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and finally Mad Max: Fury Road.

Is Furiosa a prequel to Fury Road?

Yes. Furiosa follows Furiosa from childhood to her position as Imperator and ends immediately before the events of Fury Road.

What year does the first Mad Max take place?

No exact year is given. The opening describes the story as occurring “a few years from now,” so it is best treated as a near-future version of late-1970s Australia rather than a film set specifically in 1979.

How long after The Road Warrior is Beyond Thunderdome?

The film is generally placed approximately 15 years after The Road Warrior. It takes place after the nuclear catastrophe and shows new post-apocalyptic societies forming.

Is Fury Road a sequel or a reboot?

It is best described as a soft reboot, spiritual continuation or mythic revisit. It follows the same broad wasteland mythology, but George Miller did not construct it as a strictly dated sequel to every earlier event.

How long does Fury Road last in the story?

The central chase unfolds over approximately three days.

The Bottom Line

The most defensible timeline is Mad Max → The Road Warrior → Beyond Thunderdome → Furiosa → Fury Road. The first three films show the movement from social collapse to full wasteland survival and then post-nuclear reconstruction. Furiosa is a direct prequel to Fury Road, but the franchise should not be forced into exact calendar years. George Miller’s films work as connected legends from the same ruined world, with mythology taking precedence over a perfectly consistent date system.
