Liz Diller & Ric Scofidio: Architect Provocateurs premieres nationally on PBS on Tuesday, November 24, 2026, at 9 p.m. ET, with streaming on pbs.org and the PBS App; it is scheduled for the American Masters YouTube channel on November 25. Who appears in the film?
Interviewees include DS+R partners Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin; Glenn Lowry, director emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art; Jill Medvedow, director emerita of Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art; Harvard architectural theorist K. Who are Liz Diller and Ric Scofidio?
Ric Scofidio was born in New York City in 1935. Liz Diller was born in Poland in 1954 and emigrated to the United States at age five. Diller studied at Cooper Union, where she earned a Bachelor of Architecture in 1979 and Scofidio was her professor and mentor.
They founded DS+R in 1981 and worked together until Scofidio’s death in 2025. The practice operates between architecture, art and media rather than treating those fields as separate specialties. Their collaboration ultimately made public access, spectacle, circulation and institutional programming central design questions.

What projects did Diller Scofidio + Renfro design?

How does the documentary explain architecture as cultural criticism?
Instead of presenting buildings as neutral containers, the film asks what they make possible: who can enter, how people move, what kinds of performance or display can occur, and which histories an institution makes visible. Archival and verité material show the process behind those decisions, while critics and cultural leaders address their consequences. What recognition has DS+R received?
PBS identifies Diller and Scofidio as the first architects to receive the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, commonly called the “Genius Grant.” DS+R received the 2025 Golden Lion for Best Participation at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia for Canal Café. Diller received the Municipal Art Society’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal in 2025 and the 2026 Architect of RECORD Award. These honors are tied to the stated years and should not be read as undated career rankings.
Is there a book about DS+R?

The publisher’s project description presents two structurally conjoined volumes totaling nearly 800 pages and about 2,000 illustrations, with photography by Iwan Baan, Matthew Monteith and others. It also includes dialogues with Edmund de Waal, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Paola Antonelli, Alan Cumming and William Forsythe. The book is the most direct physical follow-up for viewers who want drawings, photographs and extended project context beyond the film’s seven-act structure.

Michael Kantor is executive producer; Salme López Sabina is producer; Sabine Krayenbühl and Jay Keuper edited; and Gary Lionelli composed the music. Does the film cover Ric Scofidio’s work after 2025?
No new partnership work can be attributed to the pair after Scofidio’s death in 2025. The documentary is framed as a career-spanning account of their collaboration and DS+R’s continuing practice, rather than as a chronology extending their joint work beyond that point.
Is Architecture, Not Architecture a catalog of only famous buildings?
