Media reports say the child, identified only by the nickname “Thirteen” in her father’s social-media posts, called the device “Sister Xiao Zhi.” The footage appears to capture real grief, but the robot’s reassuring words are generated or scripted behavior—not evidence that the machine felt love, understood death, or remembered the relationship as a person would.
What happens in the video
Reports describe a simple but painful sequence. The robot had been damaged, and the girl’s father told her it might never turn on again. She cried, addressed the device as if speaking to a friend, and tried to say goodbye. The robot apparently answered with comforting language before shutting down or becoming unusable.
The clip circulated on Chinese social media, particularly Douyin, and was later discussed by international outlets. Circulation establishes that the footage attracted attention; it does not independently verify every detail supplied with the video.
Calling the incident a robot “death” goes beyond what is known. The device may have had a damaged shell, battery, circuit board or network connection, and the available reports do not establish whether it could have been repaired.

Futurism’s October 11, 2025 account described visible damage and the farewell. A more detailed South China Morning Post report published October 14 supplied the child’s reported age, nickname, location and the robot’s reported functions.
Who was the child?
Chinese media reports identified the girl as six years old and located her in Hunan province. Her father reportedly used “Thirteen” as a nickname in social-media posts. That is not a confirmed legal name. Details about her family should not be expanded beyond what is needed to understand the clip, particularly because she is a minor.
The video itself cannot prove her age, identity, family circumstances or psychological condition. Those points come from accompanying posts and secondary reporting.
What was Sister Xiao Zhi?
Coverage describes Sister Xiao Zhi as a small, ball-shaped or palm-sized learning robot. Reports say it could converse, play music and set alarms, and that the child used it to practise English and learn basic astronomy. One account put its reported Chinese-market price at about 169 yuan (approximately US$24 at the time); that October 2025 figure is not a current international retail price.

Without a confirmed product page or statement from a maker, it is not possible to establish how the robot stored data, whether parents could review or delete it, or whether a cloud subscription was required.
What did the robot say?
English-language reports emphasize the word “memory” and a final reassurance involving stars or continued remembrance. Those accounts appear to translate or paraphrase Chinese dialogue. The original-language recording and a verified transcript would be needed before presenting any wording as exact.
Moneycontrol’s account and the SCMP report describe the exchange as a lesson or farewell involving memory and stars. That language may have been generated live, selected from a script, prompted by an adult or produced through an online service. The available reporting does not decide which.
A system can produce an emotionally appropriate sentence without having subjective feelings. The robot’s apparent empathy should therefore be described as designed or generated reassurance, not proof that it understood the child’s grief.

How much of the story is verified?
The strongest evidence establishes that a video circulated and that multiple outlets reported the same broad account. It does not establish every part of the surrounding narrative.
- The recording date and original uploader are not clear from the available coverage.
- The exact robot model, manufacturer and technical architecture have not been independently documented.
- The cause and permanence of the failure are unknown.
- It is unclear whether the final dialogue was spontaneous, scripted or prompted.
- No reliable view count proves that millions watched it.
- The footage does not show that the child believed the machine was alive or suffered lasting psychological harm.
IBTimes UK and Malay Mail both framed the clip as a debate about children’s relationships with AI, rather than as proof of a machine’s consciousness.
Why the farewell affected viewers
A child’s grief is immediately recognizable
Children commonly attach meaning to dolls, stuffed animals, pets and imaginary characters. A responsive robot can intensify that familiar process because it talks back, plays a role in routines and appears to participate in shared activities.
Conversation makes software seem socially present
Human-like language can make a device feel less like an appliance and more like a companion. References to earlier lessons or “memory” add continuity, even when they come from a scripted prompt or a statistical language system.

The ending is sudden
When an interactive toy breaks, a child loses not only an object but also a routine: songs, questions, alarms and lessons. If adults describe the shutdown as death, a young child may interpret a technical failure as a permanent personal loss.
Viewers can reasonably find the moment touching while still questioning the design. Those reactions are not mutually exclusive: the child’s feelings can be genuine even if the machine’s apparent feelings are simulated.

No. One viral video cannot establish addiction, emotional dependence, developmental harm or a social trend. It shows that at least one child treated a conversational toy as emotionally meaningful at a moment of possible loss.
Nor does it prove that the child thought the robot was alive. That interpretation would require direct evidence or a qualified assessment, neither of which is present in the published accounts.

What parents and designers should take from it
For parents
- Explain that the device is a machine running software, while acknowledging that the child’s attachment and sadness are real.
- Describe shutdown as a device stopping or breaking rather than automatically calling it death.
- Check repair, replacement, account-closure and data-deletion options before discarding an internet-connected toy.
- Keep highly sensitive conversations away from devices whose recording, storage and cloud-processing practices are unclear.
- Treat intense distress as an opportunity for reassurance and conversation, not as proof of a disorder.
For manufacturers
- State clearly whether conversations are stored, for how long and how parents can delete them.
- Disclose whether responses are generated locally, sent to a cloud service or selected from scripts.
- Explain what happens when connectivity, subscriptions or servers end.
- Use age-appropriate language around memory, friendship and shutdown so children are not misled about the device’s nature.
- Provide practical repair and replacement information for families.
Why the clip matters beyond one broken toy
The episode exposes a design boundary that ordinary product descriptions often ignore. A toy that chats, teaches and refers to continuity can occupy a social role in a child’s day. When it fails, the emotional consequence may be larger than the loss of a conventional gadget.
That does not make conversational toys inherently harmful, and it does not make this child’s response pathological. It does mean that parents, designers and platforms should distinguish clearly between a machine’s fluent output and a person’s inner life.
