Any site still using the 9anime or AniWave name should be treated as unverified, even if it looks identical to the former service.
What happened to 9anime?
9anime operated under that name until its operators announced a rebrand to AniWave in August 2023. The announcement cited legal pressure, including DMCA issues and ISP blocking. TorrentFreak’s contemporaneous report covers that change, and a community announcement dated August 2, 2023 recorded the migration.

AniWave later went offline on August 27, 2024, during a wider collapse of large unauthorized streaming sites. The shutdown notice identified AniWave as the former 9anime service. See the contemporaneous shutdown report and Los Angeles Times coverage.
That history matters because a later domain claiming to be the “new official” 9anime is not established as a continuation merely by using the old logo, layout or name. Community moderators warned after the shutdown that such claims could be fake. That warning is not a guarantee about every domain, but it is a strong reason not to trust visual similarity or search rankings.

What does “Invalid request” mean?
“Invalid request” is not a unique 9anime error code. It is generic application or server wording for a request that is malformed, expired, blocked, routed incorrectly or no longer matches the service’s current state. The exact meaning depends on which component generated the message; HTTP status descriptions from MDN Web Docs do not identify a single 9anime-specific cause.
When the original service was operating, users associated the message with several different situations:
- Video-host failure: one embedded host could be unavailable while other shows or episodes worked. Historical reports describe failures limited to a particular title or server (example report).
- Expired playback data: a tab left open for hours or days could retain an expired token, session or server reference. Reloading sometimes generated a fresh request.
- Stale browser data: old cookies, cached redirects or a cached episode page could submit outdated information.
- Extension interference: aggressive ad-blocking or privacy extensions could stop scripts required by a live player. Disabling protection increased exposure to malicious advertising, so it was never a risk-free fix.
- Network interference: DNS problems, ISP filtering, VPN routing, firewalls or regional policies could prevent a domain or player from completing its request. The former operators cited ISP blocking as part of the 2023 rebrand.
Those explanations describe historical failure patterns. They do not make a current 9anime-branded site genuine, and clearing data cannot revive the discontinued official service.

How to tell whether the problem is local
Use this sequence only to diagnose your browser or network. It cannot authenticate a mirror or clone.

- Open an unrelated, known-working website. If every site fails, troubleshoot your internet connection or device first.
- Open the address in a private/incognito window. If it works there, cookies, cached data or an extension may be involved.
- Try another browser, preferably without importing the first browser’s extensions.
- Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data. Success on mobile data but not Wi-Fi points to DNS, router, ISP or network-policy differences.
- Check the scope of the failure: does the homepage fail, or only one episode or embedded video?
- Stop if the page redirects to unrelated sites, asks for credentials, shows a certificate warning or offers a download. Do not bypass a security warning.

An uptime checker can show that a domain answered an automated request, but that does not prove authenticity, safe advertising or working playback. For example, a historical 9anime.gs status page reported reachability while relying on generic checks and user reports.
How to recognize a fake 9anime or AniWave site
Treat a current-looking domain as unverified rather than as an official mirror. Warning signs include:

- It appeared after the August 2024 shutdown or claims to be a “new official” replacement without a verifiable first-party announcement.
- It requests a password, payment, cryptocurrency, donation or browser-notification permission.
- It demands an extension, APK, desktop program or “video player update.”
- It produces several redirects, fake virus alerts or pop-ups before playback.
- Its login page imitates Google, Discord or another service.
- Unsolicited support accounts ask for remote access, direct messages or payment.
Do not use a random mirror list as an authority. A VPN may change whether a page loads, but it neither restores AniWave nor proves that the destination is legitimate.
If you already visited a suspicious site
Simply viewing a page does not prove that your device was compromised. Risk increases if you installed software, allowed notifications, entered credentials or supplied payment details. Take these steps:
- Close the tab and do not return to download a “fix.”
- Reject or remove that site’s browser-notification permission.
- Review recently installed extensions and remove anything you do not recognize.
- Run your device’s normal, up-to-date security scan.
- Change any password entered on the site, especially where it was reused; enable multifactor authentication where available.
- If payment or cryptocurrency details were submitted, contact the provider and monitor statements and account activity.
- Ignore follow-up “support” messages requesting remote access, codes or additional payments.
Where to watch anime legally now
Choose by catalog and region, not by promises that a service will “fix” 9anime. Licensing changes, so check the current catalog in your country before subscribing.

Is 9anime permanently shut down?
The original 9anime name was replaced by AniWave in August 2023, and AniWave shut down on August 27, 2024. There is no ordinary official-service outage to repair in 2026.
Is AniWave the same as 9anime?
Yes, AniWave was the announced rebrand of the former 9anime service. That does not make later sites using either name official.

Can clearing cache fix “Invalid request”?
It could have helped a live site with stale local data. It cannot restore 9anime or AniWave after the shutdown.
Is 9anime.gs official?
Historical status pages and old community posts cannot establish that a domain is official in 2026. Do not rely on a copied name, logo or uptime result.
What if only one episode fails?
Historically, a single episode could fail because of an upstream video host or expired request. With the original service gone, do not use that pattern as evidence that a current clone is safe.
Can a VPN fix the error?
Changing networks may reveal ISP or regional filtering, but it does not change the shutdown status or validate an unverified domain.
What if I entered my password on a clone?
Change it immediately anywhere it was reused, enable multifactor authentication, and monitor the associated account for suspicious activity.
The Bottom Line
If you are trying to reach the former official service, there is nothing to repair: 9anime became AniWave and AniWave shut down. A similarly named site that still works is an unverified third party, so protect your accounts and device instead of installing a player, bypassing a warning or entering payment details.
