Like a Skinny Ant is a 44-minute Italian documentary about researcher and filmmaker Alessandro de Bertolini’s 7,500-kilometer solo bicycle journey across Asia. The 2026 film traces his 75 days on the road from Mongolia’s Altai region to Kathmandu, linking the landscapes he crosses with personal reflection, humanitarian projects, and atmospheric science.
What is Like a Skinny Ant about?
The documentary follows de Bertolini as he rides alone across a vast and varied stretch of Asia. He travels with a bicycle, tent, and sleeping bag, making images in what the 2026 Trento Film Festival description calls “total autonomy.” The result is both a travel account and a personal diary: the route supplies the physical scale, while the film’s connections to solidarity and scientific work give the expedition a purpose beyond distance.
The journey covered 7,500 kilometers in 75 days, according to the Museo Etnografico Trentino San Michele’s 2024 description. De Bertolini’s expedition linked the Ger Camp project in Mongolia with the Rarahil Memorial School project in Nepal and carried instruments to collect atmospheric data for Italy’s National Research Council (CNR).
What route did de Bertolini take from Mongolia to Nepal?
The ride began in Mongolia’s Altai Mountains and ended in Kathmandu, Nepal. It crossed the Gobi Desert and China, then continued through the Yellow River region, the Kunlun Shan, the Tibetan plateaus, and the Himalayas, including Everest Base Camp.

The itinerary is more than a line between two countries: it passes through deserts, high plateaus, and mountain terrain. The film’s scale image comes through in a line from de Bertolini’s diary, reproduced on the festival page: “A continent passes under your pedals twenty centimeters from the soles of your shoes.”
Why is the film called Like a Skinny Ant?
The title describes how small one traveler can feel amid the scale of Asia’s geography. In an explanation reported by Corriere del Trentino, de Bertolini said that in the middle of all that geography he felt a gust of wind could carry him away; that sensation led him to write in his diary that he was “like a skinny ant in the middle of Asia.”

How do solidarity and science fit into the journey?
The expedition connected two humanitarian projects: Ger Camp in Mongolia and Rarahil Memorial School in Nepal. It also carried scientific instruments for atmospheric data collection by Italy’s National Research Council (CNR).
