Libby de Liberdade is a 2026 documentary portrait of Libia “Libby” Lobo Sardesai, the broadcaster who helped sustain Goa’s anti-colonial movement through the clandestine Voice of Freedom. Directed by Anjali Monteiro and K.P. Jayasankar, the film combines conversations, memories, archival material and present-day Goa, using the preparations for Sardesai’s 100th-birthday celebrations in May 2024 as a narrative anchor. Its currently listed Mumbai screenings are in October 2026; no wider streaming or commercial release has been established.
What is Libby de Liberdade about?
The film follows Sardesai across two connected stories: the underground radio operation she helped run during Portuguese rule and the public institutions she built after Goa’s liberation. Rather than treating the radio episode as an isolated wartime anecdote, Monteiro and Jayasankar place it alongside Sardesai’s recollections, archival records and contemporary views of Goa.
The event listing for the documentary gives a running time of 79 minutes, while The Daily Eye lists 78 minutes. Until the filmmakers confirm the final duration, audiences should allow roughly 80 minutes for the film itself, in addition to any discussion scheduled afterward.

Who was Libia Lobo Sardesai?
Sardesai joined the Goan liberation movement while working at All India Radio in Bombay and studying law. From forest locations near Goa, she worked with Vaman Sardesai and, for a short period, Nicolau Menezes to operate an illegal broadcast service between November 1955 and December 1961.

The station carried three names for the same service: Voice of Freedom in English, Voz de Liberdade in Portuguese and Goenche Sadvonecho Awaz in Konkani. Those names reflected its intended reach across a multilingual territory under Portuguese censorship.
What was the Voice of Freedom in Goa?
It was an underground radio service designed to give people information that colonial authorities attempted to suppress. Sardesai later called radio “the only peaceful alternative that was left to the Goans.”
Four jobs of the broadcasts
- Reliable information: provide Goans with news independent of Portuguese-controlled channels.
- A propaganda counterweight: expose official lies and atrocities and challenge false claims about India.
- Pressure on the colonial administration: Sardesai said the broadcasts were meant to demoralise Portuguese troops and officials.
- International solidarity: connect Goa’s campaign with anti-colonial movements in Asia and Africa.
A Portuguese military official, Major Felipe de Barros Rodrigues, reportedly described the station as “the only voice that has been continually hurting us at close range.” The contrast between that complaint and Sardesai’s description captures the station’s dual role: a civic information line for civilians and a direct challenge to colonial authority.

How did underground radio help Goa’s liberation?
The service kept transmitting for six years despite operating clandestinely. Its final broadcast, according to the Government of India profile of Sardesai, announced Goa’s liberation on 19 December 1961, when Indian forces ended Portuguese rule.
The New Indian Express recounts that Sardesai and Vaman Sardesai then flew over Goa in an Indian Air Force aircraft, broadcasting and dropping leaflets. The words attributed to her from that flight were: “Rejoice, rejoice, Goa is now free.” The moment turned a hidden radio voice into a visible announcement carried across the territory.
What survives in the archive?
Sardesai preserved 132 broadcast files, some extending to 300 pages. The material was scanned through Goa’s Central Library for scholarly use, giving historians a substantial documentary record alongside later interviews and official accounts. The archive also helps the film examine how memory, scripts and lived experience overlap rather than relying only on a retrospective recollection.

How does this film relate to Episode 27?
Episode 27, a 2009 short documentary, provides earlier screen context. It interviewed Sardesai with other Goa freedom fighters while revisiting the 1946–1961 struggle, including satyagraha and revolutionary groups such as the Azad Gomantak Dal. Libby de Liberdade is a later, feature-length portrait centred much more closely on Sardesai’s memories, the radio archive and her life in present-day Goa.

Why does the documentary matter now?
Sardesai’s story connects the mechanics of resistance—scripts, transmitters, coded locations and leaflets—with the long work of institution-building after independence. By placing a woman’s voice at the centre of Goa’s liberation history and preserving the physical broadcast record, Libby de Liberdade offers both an intimate portrait and a way to reconsider how information itself became an instrument of decolonisation.
