How the Argentine investigation developed
In November 2024, the Argentine Public Prosecutor’s Office said that three people had been charged in connection with alleged abandonment of a person followed by death and alleged supply or facilitation of narcotics. The prosecutor’s statement described an investigative reconstruction of Payne’s stay at the hotel from October 13 through October 16, 2024.

- February 2025: An Argentine court dismissed criminal-negligence charges against three defendants, according to later reporting. Two alleged narcotics suppliers remained in the case.
