Leslie Charleson, the actor best known for playing Dr. Monica Quartermaine on ABC’s General Hospital, died on January 12, 2025, at age 79. Executive producer Frank Valentini announced her death through the show’s official Instagram account. Contemporary reports said she died in a hospital after an illness; a later medical-examiner finding provided the more specific public explanation. ABC News reported her death and age, while the official General Hospital announcement carried Valentini’s tribute.
Los Angeles County records later listed her cause of death as sequelae of blunt head trauma
and classified the manner of death as an accident. In plain language, “sequelae” means the lasting consequences of an earlier injury. The public record does not establish exactly when or how Charleson sustained the head trauma.
That distinction matters. Reports that Charleson had experienced falls, mobility problems and a recent hospitalization offer health context, but they do not prove that a particular fall caused the fatal injury. Nor should the asthma, arthritis, atrial fibrillation or normal-pressure hydrocephalus listed as significant conditions on the death record be presented as causes of death. E! News and TMZ’s document-based report published the later cause-and-manner information.

The official terminology was “sequelae of blunt head trauma.” It describes complications or effects that followed a blunt-force head injury rather than identifying a new injury occurring on the day of death. The medical examiner classified the death as accidental, but publicly available records do not provide a detailed reconstruction of the event.
Early coverage used the phrase “long illness,” which reflected what was known when her death was announced. That wording should be treated as contemporary reporting, not as a replacement for the later medical-examiner finding. Her defining role: Monica Quartermaine on General Hospital
Charleson joined General Hospital as Dr. Monica Bard Webber Quartermaine in 1977, replacing Patsy Rahn, who originated the role in 1976. Charleson continued playing Monica through 2023, making her on-screen run approximately 46 calendar years. She was moved from contract to recurring status in 2010 and appeared less frequently in the later years of her tenure. Her final appearance came in December 2023. The Los Angeles Times documented her career and status on the series.
Tributes often describe Charleson’s run as nearly 50 years, but the more precise description is 46 years in the role, from 1977 to 2023. TMZ reported that she appeared in 2,079 episodes. The Television Academy biography credits her with more than 2,000 General Hospital episodes as part of a career unusually associated with one character.

Monica was a cardiologist and a central member of the wealthy, volatile Quartermaine family. Her storylines combined medical drama with the family’s romances, rivalries, betrayals and business conflicts. Among the most notable was the Monica–Alan–Rick love triangle, along with stories involving Monica’s marriages, affairs, children and difficult relationships with other Quartermaines.
Why Monica’s breast-cancer storyline mattered
One of Monica’s most important stories was her breast-cancer diagnosis. Charleson helped propose the storyline because she believed daytime television had a responsibility to address serious issues that affected viewers outside the fictional hospital. In a 1994 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Charleson explained her thinking about bringing the subject to the soap opera.
The storyline added a different dimension to Monica: she was not only a physician treating other people, but also a patient forced to confront fear, treatment and vulnerability. It became part of the reason the character remained important beyond the Quartermaine family’s romantic and financial intrigue.
How long was Leslie Charleson on television?
Before General Hospital, Charleson built a substantial daytime résumé. Her early soap credits included A Flame in the Wind, As the World Turns and Love Is a Many Splendored Thing. The Television Academy credits her with more than 1,400 episodes of Love Is a Many Splendored Thing.

Was Leslie Charleson a Daytime Emmy winner?
Charleson should not be described as a Daytime Emmy winner. She is widely reported in soap-industry and historical coverage as a four-time Daytime Emmy nominee for Outstanding Actress or Lead Actress, with nominations associated with 1980, 1982, 1983 and 1995. Soap Opera Digest and Los Angeles Times coverage of the 1995 nominations support that account.
There is, however, a discrepancy in the current Television Academy biography, which lists No Nominations.
The safest wording is therefore that Charleson was widely reported as a four-time Daytime Emmy nominee, rather than presenting the historical count as entirely uncontested.
Later update: what happened to Monica Quartermaine?
Spoiler warning: The following section discusses General Hospital episodes broadcast after Leslie Charleson’s death.
The soap did not immediately kill Monica off on-screen. On April 1, 2025, the show dedicated the Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Care Center in an anniversary episode. The episode had been written before Charleson died, and the tribute functioned as a remembrance of both the character and the actor. TV Insider covered the anniversary tribute.
In September 2025, General Hospital established that Monica had died peacefully in her sleep. Memorial and funeral episodes began on September 25. The fictional death was a later storyline for Monica Quartermaine and is separate from Charleson’s real-life cause of death. TVLine reported on the show’s memorial episodes.
The program also released an official video tribute to Charleson and Monica. Later in 2025, Erika Slezak appeared as Ronnie Bard, Monica’s previously unknown younger sister, in a limited storyline. Charleson’s significance to General Hospital came from the rare combination of longevity, consistency and character depth. Monica was a physician, mother, wife, romantic lead and Quartermaine combatant, while Charleson’s performance allowed the character to move between high melodrama and grounded medical stories.

Her 1977–2023 run made Monica one of daytime television’s most recognizable long-running characters. Charleson did not originate the role, and she was not continuously a contract regular throughout that entire period, but nearly five decades of association with Monica gave her a distinctive place in soap-opera history.
