On April 4, 2024, Swedish entertainment company Pophouse announced a deal for KISS’s music catalog, name, likeness, trademarks and distinctive face-paint designs. ABBA did not buy KISS; Pophouse is a separate company and a founding investor in the ABBA Voyage production.
Who bought KISS’s catalog and likeness?
The buyer is Pophouse Entertainment, a Swedish entertainment and music-investment company. Its connection to ABBA Voyage explains why news reports often described the transaction as a sale to “the company behind ABBA Voyage,” but ABBA itself was not identified as the purchaser.

Pophouse announced the transaction on April 4, 2024, saying it would preserve and develop KISS’s music, personas and imagery for new generations. KISS co-founder Gene Simmons told the Associated Press that he disliked the word “acquisition,” characterizing the arrangement as a collaboration and saying the band would not sell its catalog to a company it did not appreciate.
Pophouse said KISS had sold more than 100 million records worldwide during its roughly 50-year career.

What rights were included?
This was broader than a conventional recording-catalog purchase. The publicly announced package combines music exploitation with control of KISS’s identity and visual assets.
| Asset or right | Publicly described terms | What has not been itemized publicly |
|---|---|---|
| Music catalog | Included in the transaction announced by Pophouse. | No song-by-song schedule or recording-by-recording breakdown. |
| Brand and identity | KISS’s brand name, likeness and trademarks were included. | The announcement does not list every individual trademark or territory. |
| Visual identity | The band’s famous face-paint designs were included. | No separate valuation for the designs was disclosed. |
| Publishing and composition rights | The deal is often described in coverage as involving publishing alongside the catalog. | Pophouse did not publish a split between master recordings and composition copyrights, so the exact publishing scope cannot be determined from the announcement. |
How much did KISS sell for?
Media reports estimated the transaction at more than $300 million. Pophouse’s official announcement did not disclose a purchase price, so the figure is a reported estimate rather than a confirmed deal value.

A digital-avatar show
Associated Press reporting said the avatar production was targeted for the second half of 2027 and expected to begin in North America. That is a target, not a confirmed opening date. Pophouse chief executive Per Sundin also said the production would not simply look like ABBA Voyage; it was intended as a distinct KISS project.
A KISS-themed experience
Pophouse also announced a themed experience without publicly specifying its location, format, opening date or ticketing arrangements.

Why is ABBA Voyage part of the story?
Pophouse identifies itself as a founding investor in ABBA Voyage, the London production built around digital versions of ABBA. Pophouse’s corporate site says the show has sold 3,000,000 tickets, a figure that should be understood as the company’s own current claim.
That track record supplies the commercial and technical context for Pophouse’s KISS plans, but it does not make ABBA a rights owner or mean that the KISS avatar show will copy ABBA Voyage’s format. The only reported timing for the KISS production is the second-half-of-2027 target described by AP.

What this deal means for fans and the music business
The transaction puts several revenue streams under one strategic owner: recordings and other music uses, licensing of the KISS name and likeness, trademarked branding, iconic makeup designs, and new screen or live-style experiences. That combination lets Pophouse develop projects beyond ordinary streaming or reissues while keeping the band’s visual identity central to future productions.
It also explains why the deal should not be treated as a simple sale of a list of sound recordings. Public terms establish a broad rights package, but they do not reveal how individual songs, compositions, masters, territories or existing licenses are divided.
