Jimmy Kimmel returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 23, 2025, after ABC suspended production the week before. In his opening monologue, he addressed his remarks about Charlie Kirk’s killing, defended free expression and criticized FCC Chair Brendan Carr. The phrase “embarrassment to Republicans” comes from Ars Technica’s headline; its article text was not available for independent verification.
Why ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel’s show
On September 15, 2025, Kimmel made remarks about reactions to the killing of Charlie Kirk. On September 17, ABC announced that the show was preempted indefinitely. Disney said it paused production to avoid inflaming an emotionally tense situation, describing Kimmel’s comments as ill-timed and insensitive. The company later said it decided to bring the show back after “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel. ABC News reported the suspension and return decision.
The suspension followed public comments from Carr, who had suggested there was a path to suspending Kimmel and that the FCC had remedies to consider. ABC quoted Carr saying: “There’s calls for Kimmel to be fired. I think, you know, you could certainly see a path forward for suspension over this and again, you know, the FCC is going to have remedies that we could look at.” He made the remarks on the Benny Johnson podcast before ABC announced its decision. ABC News reported Carr’s comments.
What Kimmel said when he returned
Kimmel returned on September 23. ABC described his opening monologue as more than 15 minutes long. He explained that he had not intended to make light of Kirk’s murder or blame a specific group. “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” he said, according to ABC. He characterized the suspect as a sick person who believed violence was a solution. ABC News covered the monologue.

Why the headline calls Carr an “embarrassment to Republicans”
“Embarrassment to Republicans” is the characterization in Ars Technica’s headline about Kimmel’s return. Because the article text was not available for verification, the phrase should be understood as headline wording, not as a confirmed verbatim quotation from Kimmel. Ars Technica’s headline is the direct source for that wording.

There is a notable contrast in Carr’s public statements. A May 7, 2026, Senate Commerce Committee release quotes a statement Carr made before becoming FCC chair, saying political satire “helps hold those in power accountable” and has “long been targeted for censorship.” That release records the senators’ criticism and their account of Carr’s earlier statement; it is advocacy, not a court finding. Did Kimmel return to every ABC affiliate?
No, not immediately. Disney’s decision restored the show to ABC’s network schedule, but Nexstar and Sinclair initially continued to preempt it on their ABC affiliate stations. ABC reported that the show was available through Disney streaming products at the time, with full episodes arriving the next day on Hulu and Disney+. Those were details reported in September 2025, not a guarantee of current local carriage or streaming availability. ABC News reported the affiliate response and then-available streaming options.

How the later ABC–FCC license case differs
The 2025 suspension and the subsequent license litigation are separate events. In October 2026, ABC and Disney were challenging the FCC’s early review of licenses for eight ABC-owned stations. At a hearing on October 6, a judge had not yet ruled on ABC’s request to block the review. The Associated Press reported that additional briefs were due October 9 and October 14 and that a ruling was not expected before at least mid-October. That report describes the case’s status as of October 6, 2026; it does not establish a later outcome. The Associated Press reported on the court dispute.
