1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn The Daily Show on April 22, 2024, Jon Stewart mocked the breathless coverage surrounding Donald Trump’s New York hush-money trial. His complaint was not that the case lacked importance; it was that live narration of routine details could make every moment sound momentous—and risk dulling attention when genuinely consequential news arrived.
What did Jon Stewart criticize?
Stewart targeted coverage that followed Trump’s motorcade to court, explained that a courtroom image was a still photograph, and lingered on courtroom sketches and speculation about facial expressions. He summed up the motorcade treatment with the line, “It’s not a chase. He’s commuting!” as reported by Mediaite on April 23, 2024.
The joke was aimed at the scale and tone of the coverage: Stewart questioned whether ordinary movements and ambiguous visual details deserved sustained, dramatic narration. He did not argue that the trial itself was unimportant.
What was his warning about making everything sound urgent?
Stewart framed the trial as a test not only of the legal system but also of journalism. “This trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system,” he said. “But it’s also a test of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way – a task they have acknowledged they’ve performed poorly in the past,” The Guardian reported on April 23, 2024.

His central concern was that if news organizations present mundane details as earth-shattering, audiences might not believe them when something genuinely interesting happens. That is Stewart’s argument about the risk of overstatement, not a measured finding that the coverage changed viewers’ attention, trust, or response.
Why were reporters describing the courtroom?
New York rules barred cameras in trials, limiting direct visual coverage of proceedings. The Associated Press reported on April 22, 2024 that roughly 140 reporters followed that day’s proceedings from the courtroom or an overflow room, while news organizations relayed details through live blogs and on-screen text.

That restriction helps explain why broadcasters and reporters used descriptions, sketches, and other available details to cover a trial viewers could not watch directly. It does not settle Stewart’s editorial question: whether particular details merited the attention and dramatic framing they received. The practical need to report without courtroom footage and the question of proportionality can both be real.
