John Cena said the staged, nearly nude Oscars gag was harder for him than filming a comedic sex scene in Trainwreck. The difference, he explained, was the audience: a crowded film set made the scene awkward, but at the Oscars he faced a room of industry peers, including people he had never met.
Why Cena found the Trainwreck scene awkward
In an August 2024 interview on Club Shay Shay, host Shannon Sharpe asked Cena whether sex scenes were difficult to film. Cena answered, “Oh my God, it’s the worst,” then explained, “There is nothing intimate about it.”
He was talking about the comedic sex scene in Trainwreck. As Cena described it, the discomfort came from doing something meant to look intimate while many people were working nearby on set. It was a performance, not a private moment.

Why the Oscars appearance felt worse
Asked which experience was harder, the Trainwreck scene or appearing nearly naked at the Oscars, Cena chose the Oscars. He said he was standing in front of a room of peers, many of whom he had never met. The awkwardness shifted from performing an intimate scene in front of a working crew to being conspicuously exposed before fellow members of the entertainment industry.

At the March 10, 2024 Academy Awards, Cena took part in a staged gag that recalled the streaker who disrupted the ceremony in 1974. He presented the costume-design award while holding an oversized envelope in front of himself. The Associated Press covered the moment and its connection to the earlier ceremony interruption in its Academy Awards report.
Was John Cena actually naked at the Oscars?
No. The apparent nudity was part of the gag; Cena wore a modesty garment to conceal himself. CBS News reported on the garment used during the bit. The envelope was part of the staging, not evidence that he was fully nude onstage.
