Later reporting identifies Kathryn Hahn as Gothel. Disney has announced Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, with the film scheduled for theatrical release on March 31, 2028, according to Variety.
Was Scarlett Johansson cast as Mother Gothel?
No. Variety reported on October 9, 2025, that Johansson was being eyed for the villain role while the project was resuming early development. The same report said casting had not been solidified. That made her a reported possibility, not a confirmed member of the cast: Variety’s October 2025 report.

How does the remake relate to the original?
The upcoming production adapts Disney’s animated musical fantasy adventure, which the studio lists as released on November 24, 2010. Disney Japan’s 2026 casting announcement says the original earned more than $590 million worldwide; that figure is Disney’s own stated figure, not an independently cited box-office database total. The original film’s details are on Disney’s official Tangled page.
