Ameneh’s Golden Blood, a documentary by Iranian writer and filmmaker Habib Ahmadzadeh, was screened on Friday, 23 October 2026, in Toronto and Tehran at the same time. York University’s West Asia Research Cluster hosted the Toronto event at York Lanes, with an in-person and online programme followed by a 90-minute question-and-answer session. In Tehran, the film played at Tarikh Café and was followed by a discussion.
The film follows Ameneh, a young woman from Bushehr whose exceptionally rare Rh-null blood type prompted a 13-day international search for compatible blood. “Golden blood” is a nickname for Rh-null blood, which lacks all Rh antigens; it does not mean the blood is medically purer or safer than other types.
What is Ameneh’s Golden Blood about?
The documentary centres on Ameneh and her family’s effort to find blood that could save her life. She is from Bushehr in southern Iran, and testing identified her as having Rh-null blood, the rarest known blood type. The story follows the family, physicians and blood services as they look beyond Iran for a compatible donor.

A September 2026 documentary-based account reported that Ameneh’s hemoglobin level was 2 and that Dr. Mostafa Moghadam contacted colleagues in 23 countries. Those details come from a secondary account of the documentary rather than an independently audited clinical report.

The film also places the medical emergency in the context of sanctions. The Toronto programme was framed around how sanctions affect hospitals, financial transactions and clinical decisions. The same secondary account says a shipping company that had agreed to carry donated blood for 1,000 euros withdrew over sanctions fears, and that the blood arrived too late. That account should be read as reported testimony, not as a separately verified logistics investigation.

Rh-null blood has none of the antigens in the Rh blood-group system. Cleveland Clinic calls it the rarest known blood type and says about 43 people have ever been reported with it; fewer than 50 people have ever been found with the condition. Because Rh-null red cells lack Rh antigens, finding suitable blood for someone who has the type can require international coordination.

The nickname can be misleading. Cleveland Clinic transfusion-medicine physician Zaher Otrock explains that “golden blood” signals rarity, not superior purity or transfusion safety. A person with Rh-null blood may be able to donate red cells that are valuable for some patients with uncommon Rh-system needs, but transfusion decisions still depend on clinical testing and specialist blood-bank procedures.
How did the search in the film unfold?
- Emergency identified: Ameneh’s family and physicians confronted a life-threatening need for compatible blood.
- Rare type confirmed: Testing identified Rh-null blood, sharply limiting compatible supplies.
- International contacts made: Dr. Mostafa Moghadam contacted colleagues in 23 countries, while Iranian blood authorities and relief organizations joined the search.
- Transport became a barrier: The documentary’s account describes sanctions-related concerns over shipping donated blood.
- Public discussion followed: The Toronto and Tehran screenings used discussions to connect the medical case with questions about sanctions and access to care.

The Toronto event treated the documentary as both a medical story and a case study in how sanctions can shape care. Questions about importing blood, paying carriers and making urgent clinical decisions are especially consequential when a patient’s blood type is exceptionally uncommon. The event’s online option also allowed people outside York University to join the conversation with Ahmadzadeh and Chaufan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rh-null the same as O-negative blood?
No. O-negative describes the ABO and RhD systems, while Rh-null means that all Rh-system antigens are absent. Compatibility must be assessed by a specialist blood bank rather than inferred from the O-negative label.
Why is Rh-null blood so difficult to replace?
People with Rh-null blood can lack the Rh antigens that appear on ordinary donor red cells, so compatible units are exceptionally scarce. International donor registries and carefully coordinated transport may be needed when local supplies are unavailable.
Was the Toronto screening available online?
Yes. York’s programme was offered in person and online, and it included a 90-minute Q&A after the screening. Access to any recording or replay is separate from the live event and is not established here.
Who hosted the Tehran screening?
The Tehran event took place at Tarikh Café and was hosted by filmmaker and Iranian history researcher Hossein Dehbashi. Film critic Abbas Yari attended, and the programme included a discussion with Ahmadzadeh.
