But this is not a new 2026 launch: Instagram expanded Remix to regular video posts in January 2022, then folded many short video posts into the Reels experience later that year. Current Instagram help pages still describe reuse across Reels, feed videos and photos, subject to privacy, age, region and creator-level controls.
“Any public video” is therefore shorthand, not a guarantee. A public post can still have Remix or reuse disabled, and the button may be unavailable for a particular format, account, location or device.
What changed, and when?
Remix began as a way to respond to existing Reels. In January 2022, Instagram expanded the feature to regular video posts, as reported by Social Media Today. Meta’s July 2022 announcement then described a broader video strategy: new Instagram video posts shorter than 15 minutes would be shared as Reels, alongside additional Remix layouts and photo-remixing tools (Meta, July 21, 2022).
That product history explains why older posts may still be labelled “video” while newer short posts appear as Reels. The underlying reuse controls now cover more than one format.

Timeline
- 2021: Meta introduced Remix for Reels (Meta announcement).
- January 2022: Remix expanded beyond Reels to regular Instagram videos.
- July 2022: Meta announced expanded Remix layouts, sequential playback and the move of new video posts under 15 minutes into the Reels experience.
- 2025 onward: Instagram added separate reuse surfaces, including reposts. Those are not the same as Remix.
What “public video” actually means
Instagram’s current help documentation says eligible content from public accounts—including Reels, feed videos and photos—may be used in Remix and other reuse features (Instagram Help). Eligibility is conditional:
- Private accounts: Other users cannot Remix or reuse their Reels, feed videos or photos.
- Public accounts: The owner can switch reuse off for the whole account or for an individual post.
- Age and location: Instagram applies additional restrictions to some users under 18, and features may not be available in every region.
- Format and rollout: A post may not support Remix even when the profile is public.
“Public” describes who can view a post. “Remix enabled” describes whether another user can incorporate it into a new Instagram creation. Original-audio availability is a separate issue and does not by itself grant permission to reuse the video.
How to Remix an eligible video
Video Remix creation is a mobile-app workflow; Instagram says it is not available on computers (Instagram Help).
- Open Instagram on an iPhone or Android phone.
- Open the eligible public Reel or feed video.
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Choose Remix or Remix this video.
- Select the layout or recording mode shown for that post.
- Record your response or add a clip from your device.
- Edit timing, audio, voice-over, captions and other available elements.
- Publish the resulting Reel.
Labels and layout choices vary by operating system, app version and post. The published creation keeps a Remix relationship to the source rather than functioning as an unrelated re-upload.

Remix formats Instagram has documented
- Side-by-side: The source and your reaction share the frame.
- Top-and-bottom: A split-screen arrangement.
- Picture-in-picture: One video appears in a smaller window over the other.
- Green screen: The source forms the background for your recording.
- Sequential: The original plays first, followed by your clip.
Not every post or account receives every mode. Meta described these options in its 2022 product announcement (Meta).
Why the Remix button is missing
A missing button is not automatically an app bug. Check these causes in order:
- The source account is private.
- The owner disabled Remix or broader reuse at account level.
- Reuse was disabled on that individual post.
- The post format is not eligible, or it predates the relevant reuse system without the setting being enabled.
- You are using Instagram on a computer; video Remix creation is mobile-only.
- The feature is restricted in your region or by age-based account settings.
- Instagram is testing a different interface, label or rollout for your account.
If the option appears but publishing fails, review audio and account restrictions and try again later. Instagram’s documentation does not identify one universal cause for every publishing failure.
How to stop others from remixing your content
Turn off reuse for the account
- Open your Instagram profile.
- Tap the top-right menu.
- Open Sharing and reuse.
- Under Allow people to create with and reuse your content, switch off the controls for posts, Reels or the relevant formats.
Instagram says these controls can cover feed videos, Reels and photos (Instagram Help). Menu wording can differ between iPhone and Android.

Turn off reuse for one post
- Open the Reel, video or photo.
- Tap the post’s options menu.
- Choose Remixing or the applicable reuse setting.
- Turn reuse off.
The exact label changes as Instagram updates its interface.
What happens to existing Remixes?
Disabling reuse does not necessarily remove Remixes that already exist. According to Instagram’s help information:
- Existing Remixes may remain after you switch the setting off.
- Deleting the original photo or video deletes Remixes made from it.
- If you restore the original during Instagram’s restoration period, associated Remixes may also be restored.
- Switching a public account to private for more than 24 hours causes its Remixes to be deleted.
- A person making a Remix may be able to download source content during creation, but the original poster cannot download other users’ Remixes through that same feature.
Public reuse can also increase the chance that content appears in search-engine results, depending on Instagram’s settings and indexing.
Remix is not reposting, downloading or a universal licence

Meta announced Instagram reposts for public Reels and feed posts in August 2025 as a separate feature (Meta).

Does Remix permission solve copyright and privacy issues?
No. The Remix switch is permission to use an Instagram feature, not a blanket copyright licence for every song, clip, person, trademark or other asset in a video.
- The uploader may not own all third-party material in the source.
- A Remix can still raise copyright, privacy, publicity-rights or defamation concerns.
- Instagram permission does not necessarily cover downloading, distributing or commercializing the result on another platform.
- Music agreements can change; Instagram notes that audio may later be muted when rights change (Instagram Help).
Do not assume that attribution, a visible Remix link or the presence of a button makes every use lawful. If your project is commercial or will leave Instagram, obtain the permissions and licences you need for the actual material and territory.
Reach and monetization are not guaranteed
Remix is a collaboration and creation tool, not a promise of distribution, payment or eligibility for a monetization programme. Add substantial commentary, reporting, education, satire or storytelling instead of making cosmetic edits or simply re-uploading the source.
Meta’s March 2026 originality guidance concerns Facebook: it says duplicative or low-value edits may be deprioritized, while substantial analysis or storytelling can count as original contribution (Meta). That statement should not be treated as an identical Instagram ranking rule.

Should you use Instagram’s native editor?
For a quick reaction, split-screen response, voice-over or captioned collaboration, the native mobile tool is the simplest route and requires no separate purchase. Creators who need longer capture, storyboards, detailed editing or insights can also consider Meta’s Edits app, which Meta describes here: Introducing Edits. That announcement does not establish a current paid-plan price.
An external editor does not solve music licensing or grant rights to someone else’s footage. If your goal is only to react inside Instagram, adding another app usually adds work without adding permission.
The Bottom Line
Instagram has allowed eligible public feed videos—not just Reels—to be remixed since 2022. The feature remains conditional: privacy, post-level settings, age, region, format and mobile availability all matter. Use Remix for an original Instagram response, but treat it as a platform feature permission—not a universal copyright licence, reposting right or monetization guarantee.
