The documentary is Becoming Led Zeppelin, Bernard MacMahon’s 2025 film about how Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham formed the band and became international rock stars. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists an 85% Tomatometer score from 46 critics and a 95% Popcornmeter score from more than 1,000 verified audience ratings. Its current listing includes Netflix, although catalogs vary by country and can change.
One important date correction: the film was “new” to Netflix on June 7, 2025, not during the current week in August 2026. The original announcement appeared on June 3, 2025. Read the original Netflix-arrival announcement.

What Becoming Led Zeppelin is about
This is primarily an origin story, not a complete biography of Led Zeppelin. It follows the musicians’ pre-band careers, the circumstances that brought them together, the development of their distinctive sound and their rapid ascent from working players to one of rock’s defining acts.
MacMahon combines interviews, concert performances, recordings and archival material, including previously unseen footage, to let the surviving members describe the band’s beginnings in their own words. The film’s structure is therefore focused on formation and early success rather than a detailed account of every later tour, controversy or career chapter.

- BECOMING LED ZEPPELIN explores the origins and meteoric rise of the iconic group against all odds. Powered by awe-inspiring, psychedelic, never-before-seen footage, performances and music, Bernard MacMahon?s experiential cinematic odyssey explores Led Zeppelin?s creative, musical, and personal origin story. Told in Led Zeppelin?s own words, it is the first officially sanctioned film on the group.
Rotten Tomatoes’ synopsis and credits identify MacMahon as director and list Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham as the central subjects.
What the 95% Rotten Tomatoes score actually means
| Measure | Current listing | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Tomatometer | 85% from 46 critic reviews | The percentage of critics’ reviews marked positive. |
| Popcornmeter | 95% from more than 1,000 verified ratings | The share of audience ratings marked positive. |
The headline’s 95% figure is the Popcornmeter, not the critics’ score. It does not mean that 95% of viewers gave the film a perfect rating, nor is it a scientific survey of all people who watched it. “Verified” refers to Rotten Tomatoes’ rating-validation system. Both percentages can change as additional reviews and ratings are added. Check the current Rotten Tomatoes page for the live numbers.

Why fans may enjoy it
- Rare archival and performance material gives the band’s early history a strong visual and musical presence.
- The four members’ perspectives keep the focus on how the group’s chemistry and sound developed.
- The concert footage and soundtrack make it a natural choice for classic-rock viewers who want a substantial music-first experience.
- Its roughly two-hour length provides a self-contained evening watch without attempting to cover every period of the band’s career.
Where expectations should be tempered
Critical reaction is positive but less emphatic than the audience response. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus praises the soundtrack and concert footage while suggesting that the film may not be the definitive Led Zeppelin documentary. Its controlled, familiar account can be more rewarding for established fans than for newcomers seeking a deeply critical examination of the band’s controversies or a broad history of rock music.
Viewers who know little about Led Zeppelin may want additional context elsewhere: the film assumes that its central appeal is seeing and hearing the band’s origins rather than explaining every cultural influence or later development in detail.

Verdict: should you watch?
Yes, if you are a Led Zeppelin fan or want a performance-rich classic-rock documentary about the band’s formation and breakthrough. The 95% audience score signals unusually strong viewer approval, while the 85% critics’ score and the film’s focused scope provide a more measured picture. Go in expecting an engaging origin story with archival access—not a final, exhaustive or relentlessly investigative biography.
