Spoilers for iHostage: Netflix’s Dutch thriller is based on the hostage crisis at the Apple Store on Amsterdam’s Leidseplein on February 22, 2022. The film uses the real incident as its framework, but it is not a documentary or a scene-by-scene reconstruction. The names, dialogue and several character relationships were fictionalized.
The real standoff lasted about five hours, involved a cryptocurrency ransom demand worth €200 million, and ended when the hostage escaped. The armed attacker pursued him outside and was struck by a vehicle operated by the Dutch police’s specialist intervention service.
What happened at the Amsterdam Apple Store?
At approximately 5:30 p.m. on February 22, 2022, a 27-year-old Amsterdam man entered Apple’s store at Leidseplein wearing camouflage clothing. He was carrying a handgun and a semiautomatic firearm. Dutch authorities also said he had fired at police officers who responded to the incident.

The attacker demanded €200 million in cryptocurrency and requested safe passage from the store. Reports that describe the demand as $200 million are imprecise: the Dutch authorities’ account specified euros, not dollars.
A standoff with people hidden throughout the building
The crisis was not limited to the hostage and the gunman seen at the front of the store. Police had to determine where other people were located and remove them without provoking the attacker. Negotiators communicated with the gunman while specialist officers secured the area around Leidseplein.
Authorities eventually evacuated roughly 70 people from the building, including people who had been hiding inside. That part of the real event is reflected in the film’s focus on employees and customers trying to remain silent and unseen, although iHostage concentrates the large number of real participants into a small group of fictionalized characters.

- The hostage moved toward the store entrance as the water was delivered.
- He broke away and fled outside.
- The gunman pursued him while still presenting an immediate danger.
- A vehicle operated by the Dutch Dienst Speciale Interventies, or DSI, struck the attacker.
- Because officers believed he might be wearing explosives, a robot examined him before medical personnel approached.
The hostage survived. The attacker suffered serious injuries, was taken to hospital and died the next day.
Were the explosives real?
The attacker appeared to be wearing an explosive vest, which greatly increased the danger for the hostage, bystanders and responding officers. However, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service later reported that the explosive material was not armed and was not set to detonate.
That distinction matters. Describing the incident as a confirmed suicide-bomb attack is inaccurate. The vest looked like a functioning explosive device during the crisis, and police had to treat it as a possible threat, but investigators did not find that it had been set up to explode.
Who was the real attacker?
Dutch authorities identified the attacker as Abdel Rahman Akkad, a 27-year-old Amsterdam resident. Reports said he had a criminal record and previous contact with social services and the justice system.

His definitive motive was never established in the official account. Police investigated the possibility of accomplices and examined the circumstances surrounding the attack, but the incident was not established as part of a wider terrorist plot. The cryptocurrency demand became one of its most widely reported features, but it did not by itself explain why the Apple Store was targeted.
Was the DSI officer prosecuted?
No. Dutch prosecutors investigated the vehicle strike and decided not to prosecute the DSI officer.
The prosecution service concluded that the intervention was justified. At the time of the collision, the attacker was pursuing the hostage and appeared to be carrying a bomb vest. Prosecutors determined that striking him was an appropriate response to the continuing and serious threat.

Those parallels do not make the film a literal reconstruction. Director Bobby Boermans and writer Simon de Waal shaped the material around five main fictional characters. The film’s attacker, hostage, negotiator, commander and employee—including Ammar Ajar, Ilian Petrov, Lynn, Kees van Zanten and Mingus—are dramatized representations rather than a complete list of the real people involved.
The production also changed names and dialogue. That approach allowed the filmmakers to build a coherent thriller without presenting invented conversations as the testimony of identifiable people connected to the crisis. Hundreds of people were involved in the real event; the film necessarily reduces that complicated situation to a handful of viewpoints.
Was the movie filmed in the real Apple Store?
No. The production recreated the Apple Store interior on a soundstage. It also used digital work to reproduce the surrounding Leidseplein environment. The result is designed to resemble the real location, but the scenes were not filmed inside the Amsterdam Apple Store during the actual crisis location.

Other details should be treated more carefully. The real hostage’s identity remained private, the attacker’s ultimate motive was not definitively established, and the apparent explosive vest was not armed. The film can dramatize pressure, fear and negotiation, but it cannot provide a verbatim account of conversations that were not publicly documented.
For that reason, the most accurate description is the one Netflix uses: iHostage is inspired by true events. It tells a fictionalized version of a real Amsterdam hostage crisis, not an exact transcript of what happened inside the store.

FAQ
Is iHostage based on a true story?
Yes. It is based on the February 22, 2022 hostage crisis at the Apple Store on Leidseplein in Amsterdam. Netflix describes it as inspired by true events because the film fictionalizes the characters, dialogue and some of the narrative details.
What happened to the hostage in the real Apple Store incident?
The 44-year-old Bulgarian hostage escaped when police delivered water to the store entrance using a robot. The attacker chased him outside, but the hostage got away. His identity was not publicly disclosed.
Did the attacker’s bomb vest explode?
No. Dutch prosecutors said the explosive material appeared to be part of a vest but was not armed and was not set to detonate.
Why was the attacker hit by a police vehicle?
A DSI vehicle struck him as he pursued the escaping hostage outside the store. Prosecutors later investigated the intervention and decided not to prosecute the officer, concluding that the action was justified by the continuing threat.
The Bottom Line
iHostage draws its central crisis from a real event: an armed takeover of Amsterdam’s Leidseplein Apple Store, a €200 million cryptocurrency demand, and a hostage escape that ended the standoff. The film’s major beats follow that outline, but its named characters and conversations are fictionalized. The real attacker died after being struck by a DSI vehicle, while the hostage survived and the officer involved was not prosecuted.
